I live in Bath and am fed up with this councils constant attack on motorists. They say they have consultationS but I've never been asked my opinion as a Bath resident and council tax payer. They have reduced all the speed limits around the area by at least 30 percent which causes traffic jams and more pollution, with large vehicles struggling up the many hills in a lower gear and I can vouch for that because it happens every day around here since they enforced them. They have put unfair charges on small businesses and self employed people with commercial vehicles coming into Bath which is generally a money making scheme because they still have no choice whether to come into Bath to provide services and deliveries, not every one can afford to replace a five year old vehicle because it isn't euro six compliant. This also means that the passing traffic is now re routing through the little villages around Bath, just moving any pollution to a different part of the county. Now this is the last straw, I have been a motorcyclist all my life and even though my company van and personal car are euro six compliant, if I am popping into town I use my motorcycle because it causes less traffic, is easy to park and is causes less pollution. These virtue signalling creeps would say we should all be on bicycles as they get driven about in their official cars and council paid taxis. Or maybe we should drive incredibly expensive EV's, even though there's virtually no infrastructure for charging them around here. Of course we could use the public transport system, except First buses have dropped all of the unprofitable routes out to the surrounding villages and the ones that are running are few and far between. So as usual because they waste a lot of our taxes on their pie in the sky schemes they need to scrape back the money from the poor motorist under the guise of saving the planet because they hope no one will object, and even if they do they will just ignore them and go ahead anyway. Taking a balanced view, charging for taking up a precious bay makes some kind of sense, albeit at a reduced rate, but charging for dedicated m/c space at same/higher rate than cars 🤪. There's never been enough encouragement from those in charge for the public to use powered 2 wheelers........One has to say the car lobby are too powerful. If a tenth of commuters switched to motorbikes, congestion would decrease, and so would emissions......

The claims of 'consultation' is a well know ploy to put forward an 'idea', when in fact the idea has already been decided as policy, but that a 'consultation' is required by council to satisfy the due process in legislation. As Londons' former Mayor, Ken Livingstone one infamously stated: "Consultations are a waste of my time. They merely hold up policies I have already made up my mind to carry out." How much emissions are stationary parked vehicles with engines switched off, emitting? What are these levels of pollution that are being spoken of? How are they being measured? How do they compare with emissions and pollution from times in the past? None of these questions can be answered by council members to show emissions have increased, because, as the 'Brown Car Guy' has shown in London with his particulate matter measuring meters, emissions are well within safe levels - except in the vicinity of train stations! Inside or outside of ULEZ areas, there is no difference. Emissions as a measure of pollution from motor vehicles is a SCAM.
@derekerynolds2072 Because the official measuring devices are near airports, you know where jet aircraft takes off from that put burnt fuel emissions direct to air. Have a look at what jet aircraft emissions actually are, and also what shipping contributes to emissions. When a cruise ship burns 250 tons of fuel per day, which is more than anyone would use in a whole lifetime of driving a car!

I havent seen or heard of any low emissions tests being done to decide if a car/van/truck/bike meets the levels to be charged or exempted. It's based on the age of the vehicle isn't it? I guess it's possible to modify or tune an engine to pass an exemption test or have a different mode or map for low emission zones. I used to have a 125cc 4 stroke motorbike, it did about 80 mpg if i thrashed it and about 120 mpg if i cruised around. I doubt it would have put out enough oxides to meet the levels for a pollution charge.

@carlarthur4442 Tax for bikes now is £117, as I've found out when a friend has just bought a 900cc bike and had to tax it. So great I'm looking at that as well, as my bike is a Tiger 900 GT Pro. Mrs car is a Fiat 500 1.2 and that's £35 tax, and my car is a Volvo V70 2.0D and that's £260 tax. RIP off Britain.

Before anyone looking at air quality takes on bikes they need to look at any of the tube stations where particular matters that actually will harm people is dangerously high. Particularly in London.
Back in the '90s, when there was a massive hike in wotorcycle tax, we were told the reason was that cars were taxed on emissions and bike were taxed on engine capacity. From January this is no longer the case and road tax for bikes should reflect that.
I am having the issue at the moment that our office is moving into the center of a large town what has a low emission zone. We also lose our free parking what we had before. I was thinking to use the motorbike, but there is no free parking either, so I will simply continue driving the car and have a 40 minute walk each morning and afternoon - and I will be still quicker at home as with public transport, what is not just more expensive then the fuel and parking charges combined, it is not reliable. The problem with the UK is, they introducing this things, totally disconnected with other service providers, because everything got privatized. The city council is going to introduce a corporate parking charge, so I'm not surprised that our business is giving up their parking spaces and the office move is an easy thing to do so. A lot of my colleagues also announced that they are looking to leave the company ahead of the planned move, I am looking too, after nearly 20 years in this company. Large corporations and politicians don't seem to give a damn about their people.
It is evident that everything that councils and governments do to cars, will soon be inflicted upon motorcyclists, too. I doubt electric cars will be immune - those bankrupt councils need to boost revenue.

Logically you should only have a car if you have tools/regular passengers or have a disability (yet motorcycles can be modified for some disabled riders), because motorcycles are cheaper to fuel (I ride all year round come rain or snow, only costs around £15 every 2-3 weeks to fill 3/4 of my tank on my bmw r1250rs). less physical presence so more road space for other riders and drivers with multiple bikes fitting per car space, and also (most likely) not gonna kill anyone if they jump in front of you due to smaller frame and mass/momentum. Obviously less damage to the environment both when driving (co2 emissions) and should an accident happen (spilt oil and fuel). Only thing I’d say is better for cars is insurance as it’s relatively cheaper considering a car is heavier so slows down slower, emits more air/ground pollution (more with bad maintenance e.g oil/diesel over the roads), more things to distract the driver such as the centre consoles like in teslas (granted attention span differs from person to person)…and cheaper tires as there’s always cheap tires, you should always buy brand new for motorcycle tires due to needing more grip so softer rubber equals faster wear.
It’s all about the revenue extorted and nothing to do greening. The real solution is to simply withdraw from the places that impose such charges. My county town is Cambridge and I never go there to spend my money. Eventually the businesses will fail and the jobs will evaporate and the former employees can consider the consequences of their voting history.
This woman obviously doesn’t get out and about around Bath and perhaps she should get out and do some research. Just walked past Saracen St where there are 2 parking bays for motorcycles and there wasn’t 2 bikes there as she would have you believe. In fact there are 12 + one Audi overlapping the bay on double yellows. As a local I do what all the others do and go elsewhere to shop and leave the town to the tourists.
Well if they charge the same price then you should be entitled to the same amount of space therefore bikes would take up a car space rather than just a small space.
Total life costs need to be considered. If I had the time to do the calculations, I would estimate that my 60k mile R1150GSA,that has been useful for over 20 years, has a lower carbon footprint than a Tesla long range sat in a lot before being sold. NUMPTY'S. If I had the time...:)

Emission based parking charges are totally illogical. To reduce emissions they should encourage all vehicles to park for as long as possible so there are no emissions being produced. Make parking free to increase footfall and trade. No cash = no chance
I see two issues: the actual emissions and the congestion (or lack thereof) caused by motorcycles. What’s missing as ever is proportionality. The same level of prejudice apples to diesel where council eco-zealots penalise on fuel and not emissions. A modern AdBlue equipped diesel actually removes NO2 from the polluted air it uses. Combined with the significantly better fuel economy (ergo CO2 emissions) these should be encouraged over petrol. Stupidity or zealotry needs to be exposed and fought tooth and nail. Councils are out of control and seem to have taken on the role of eco crusaders despite utterly no mandate.

This whole emissions based parking is BS. The main constraint when it comes to parking is the size of the land and the amount of parking bays. Charges should be based on the amount of land you reserve (the size of the bay). Motorcycles use smaller bays so they should pay very little to no fees (same as a bicycle).

The claims from the lady Councillor that a motorcycle takes up the same amount of space when parked as a motor car, indicates the level of ignorance to which she has descended. The claims of 'consultation' is a well know ploy to put forward an 'idea', when in fact the idea has already been decided as policy, but that a 'consultation' is required by council to satisfy the due process in legislation. As Londons' former Mayor, Ken Livingstone one infamously stated: "Consultations are a waste of my time. They merely hold up policies I have already made up my mind to carry out."
How much emissions are stationary parked vehicles with engines switched off, emitting? What are these levels of pollution that are being spoken of? How are they being measured? How do they compare with emissions and pollution from times in the past? None of these questions can be answered by council members to show emissions have increased, because, as the 'Brown Car Guy' has shown in London with his particulate matter measuring meters, emissions are well within safe levels - except in the vicinity of train stations! Inside or outside of ULEZ areas, there is no difference. Emissions as a measure of pollution from motor vehicles is a SCAM.

Because the official measuring devices are near airports, you know where jet aircraft takes off from that put burnt fuel emissions direct to air.
Have a look at what jet aircraft emissions actually are, and also what shipping contributes to emissions.
When a cruise ship burns 250 tons of fuel per day, which is more than anyone would use in a whole lifetime of driving a car!

Bath & North East Somerset Council have again shown themselves to out of touch with reality. The lady’s “balanced” decision and outcome will be something the unemployed of Bath will remember in the future. The reason they will living in a run down area of the country is because of HER ignorance and dreadful logic and grasp of reality. She can keep her Bath to herself. I havent seen or heard of any low emissions tests being done to decide if a car/van/truck/bike meets the levels to be charged or exempted. It's based on the age of the vehicle isn't it?
I guess it's possible to modify or tune an engine to pass an exemption test or have a different mode or map for low emission zones.
I used to have a 125cc 4 stroke motorbike, it did about 80 mpg if i thrashed it and about 120 mpg if i cruised around. I doubt it would have put out enough oxides to meet the levels for a pollution charge.

I pay £35 V E D for my 1.2 petrol car , my Motorbike is a 750cc and I pay £109 per year , plus motorcycles as far as I know aren't tested for emissions, don't they know that , makes no sense , only a money maker .

Tax for bikes now is £117, as I've found out when a friend has just bought a 900cc bike and had to tax it.
So great I'm looking at that as well, as my bike is a Tiger 900 GT Pro.
Mrs car is a Fiat 500 1.2 and that's £35 tax, and my car is a Volvo V70 2.0D and that's £260 tax.

Before anyone looking at air quality takes on bikes they need to look at any of the tube stations where particular matters that actually will harm people is dangerously high. Particularly in London.
Back in the '90s, when there was a massive hike in wotorcycle tax, we were told the reason was that cars were taxed on emissions and bike were taxed on engine capacity. From January this is no longer the case and road tax for bikes should reflect that.
I am having the issue at the moment that our office is moving into the center of a large town what has a low emission zone.
We also lose our free parking what we had before.
I was thinking to use the motorbike, but there is no free parking either, so I will simply continue driving the car and have a 40 minute walk each morning and afternoon - and I will be still quicker at home as with public transport, what is not just more expensive then the fuel and parking charges combined, it is not reliable.
The problem with the UK is, they introducing this things, totally disconnected with other service providers, because everything got privatized.
The city council is going to introduce a corporate parking charge, so I'm not surprised that our business is giving up their parking spaces and the office move is an easy thing to do so.
A lot of my colleagues also announced that they are looking to leave the company ahead of the planned move, I am looking too, after nearly 20 years in this company.
Large corporations and politicians don't seem to give a damn about their people.

I cant believe this, my youngest is at Bath Uni and if this goes ahead it will be cheaper for me to park my Land Rover Discovery TD5 in the town than my Tiger 900!! It sounds to me that someone just doesn't like Motorcycle's more than anything else.

Having taken part in my own local council consultations, the documents rarely contain evidence, just typical Barnham statements of "Safety" "Environment" when I asked for the actual evidence, it did not support the policy, it was passed despite that. (Canterbury)

However, I am also very disappointed in MAG because the only ACTION you are proposing is to contact you MP. They clearly don't care.
Logically you should only have a car if you have tools/regular passengers or have a disability (yet motorcycles can be modified for some disabled riders), because motorcycles are cheaper to fuel (I ride all year round come rain or snow, only costs around £15 every 2-3 weeks to fill 3/4 of my tank on my bmw r1250rs). less physical presence so more road space for other riders and drivers with multiple bikes fitting per car space, and also (most likely) not gonna kill anyone if they jump in front of you due to smaller frame and mass/momentum. Obviously less damage to the environment both when driving (co2 emissions) and should an accident happen (spilt oil and fuel).
Only thing I’d say is better for cars is insurance as it’s relatively cheaper considering a car is heavier so slows down slower, emits more air/ground pollution (more with bad maintenance e.g oil/diesel over the roads), more things to distract the driver such as the centre consoles like in teslas (granted attention span differs from person to person)…and cheaper tires as there’s always cheap tires, you should always buy brand new for motorcycle tires due to needing more grip so softer rubber equals faster wear.
It’s all about the revenue extorted and nothing to do greening. The real solution is to simply withdraw from the places that impose such charges. My county town is Cambridge and I never go there to spend my money. Eventually the businesses will fail and the jobs will evaporate and the former employees can consider the consequences of their voting history.
This woman obviously doesn’t get out and about around Bath and perhaps she should get out and do some research. Just walked past Saracen St where there are 2 parking bays for motorcycles and there wasn’t 2 bikes there as she would have you believe. In fact there are 12 + one Audi overlapping the bay on double yellows. As a local I do what all the others do and go elsewhere to shop and leave the town to the tourists.

Well if they charge the same price then you should be entitled to the same amount of space therefore bikes would take up a car space rather than just a small space.

Total life costs need to be considered. If I had the time to do the calculations, I would estimate that my 60k mile R1150GSA,that has been useful for over 20 years, has a lower carbon footprint than a Tesla long range sat in a lot before being sold. NUMPTY'S. If I had the time...:)

Emission based parking charges are totally illogical. To reduce emissions they should encourage all vehicles to park for as long as possible so there are no emissions being produced.
Make parking free to increase footfall and trade.

I see two issues: the actual emissions and the congestion (or lack thereof) caused by motorcycles. What’s missing as ever is proportionality. The same level of prejudice apples to diesel where council eco-zealots penalise on fuel and not emissions. A modern AdBlue equipped diesel actually removes NO2 from the polluted air it uses. Combined with the significantly better fuel economy (ergo CO2 emissions) these should be encouraged over petrol. Stupidity or zealotry needs to be exposed and fought tooth and nail. Councils are out of control and seem to have taken on the role of eco crusaders despite utterly no mandate.

The main constraint when it comes to parking is the size of the land and the amount of parking bays. Charges should be based on the amount of land you reserve (the size of the bay). Motorcycles use smaller bays so they should pay very little to no fees (same as a bicycle).
Take a leaf out of Colchester council watch and other such channels on Ytube.
Watch Dave Murphy 25 and his solution. Its the only way.
If its believed parking charges are necessary, eventually only the well off will be able to use any motor vehicle.
