I really thought we could just show up early somewhere and I could practice a few photos of the sun before the eclipse started. The only thing we actually planned out was going to north beach, but once we saw the traffic on google maps, we knew it wasn't even worth going near there. Instead we found ourselves in a field out in Prince Edward County, attempting to beat the odds against the clouds...

Been interested in photography for a while but you’ve convinced me to actually go out and do some haha
Great images.
@@ChuckJ7777 thank you!
Great video 😊 thx for sharing.
@@miikaalatalo2063 thank you, I’m really glad you enjoyed the video!
Amazing stuff. Does the backpack you have listed in the links hold the 200-600 on body?
Yes, the lens can fit in the bag with the camera attached, as long as you remove the lens hood. It's a pretty good bag for the price point. I've had mine for 4 years now and it definitely shows some wear and tear, but it has done the trick for me!
Bro. That looks good. I got a bunch i would pay for as well.
Thank you, I appreciate the comment!
What bag model is that at :53 please and thank you. Smashed the sub..
Hey, sorry for the late reply! That’s a Neewer Pro camera bag from Amazon. There’s a link in my description. It’s a pretty good budget bag. I’ve had mine for 4 years now. While it shows some wear and tear, it’s held up and done the trick for me. Thanks for subscribing!
Oh my word! The owl was incredible! I love the photo with one with one eye open and one closed and then the one yawning with his mouth open and eyes closed. Such great photos of the blackbird as well. I absolutely LOVE your excitement for finding wildlife. I have the same when I photograph a wild animal. I just get some joyful and happy and in that moment, connecting with subject that I'm photographing is just an indescribable feeling. So way to go, Curtis!
Thank you so much! I’m really glad you enjoyed the saw-whet owl photos, this encounter was truly special! I also really appreciate you becoming a member, even if it’s just for this month, your support means a lot to me.
Great review! When on a walkabout use a heavy duty binocular harness using quick release items and it will rest on your chest and stay hidden under a coat or photo vest. still at under $2k. Most fun always.
That sounds like a perfect way to manage a heavy lens! Thank you for the comment.
very nice video! but why on earth are you using 1/2000 shutter speed for a static heron? i know the a7iv doesn't have as much stabilization as the a7rv (that i am using), but i would never go higher than 1/500 for stationary birds, even at 600mm and at a distance. do you really feel you need the 1/2000?
You’re definitely right, a lower shutter speed would have been a much better choice. I think I had the shutter speed so high because I was hoping to capture the heron catching some fish. But like you mentioned, I now often use much lower shutter speeds for stationary subjects. Thanks for the feedback and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Great video. Thanks for the info

Hi Curtis, may I ask which Tripod you use at the 1:10 minute mark. Looks like the KF concept carbon tripod, but I am not sure which model. How is your experience with this tripod and the big 200-600 lens? I am trying to find a good travel tripod which can support this tele lens. Thanks!
Hey, in the video, that's a K&F aluminum tripod. I find it's light enough for hikes while still offering decent stability. Recently, I bought a K&F carbon model for my upcoming trip. While it’s incredibly lightweight and the legs seem to handle the weight of the 200-600 lens, the tripod is largely made of plastic (presumably to cut production costs), which has raised concerns about its longevity. Additionally, being lightweight, it experiences much more camera shake than the aluminum tripod. I've been having difficulties with it so far. I think they’re decent tripods for what they’re worth, but I wouldn’t have super high expectations. They get the job done for sure! Hope that helps, thank you for commenting!
Just found the channel - love the content, great shots - but, one thing - 'Mer-Gan-Ser'...
Haha, I have had a lot to learn about birds and their pronunciations. Thank you for commenting, I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
@@CurtisSnapshot - when I spotted my first Yellow Bellied Sapsucker, I was like - 'that's a Bugs Bunny bird, not a real bird...'
Good video dude, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for commenting.
So, do you shoot in slog3 for wildlife? Because 10,000 or 12,800 iso in slog3 is a mess
Oh, that’s interesting! I didn't think about how important the profile would be to mention. That owl footage was shot in S-Cinetone. Since then, I’ve switched back to the default Sony colours because I find that wildlife scenes benefit from more vibrant colours. As for S-Log3, I used it for a while but found it more convenient to shoot in other profiles. Since the footage is 10-bit, I’m still able to adjust it a fair amount. It's not full colour grading, but enough to manipulate the footage to my liking.
Great video! I'm getting rid of all my Fuji gear (the autofocus is terrible) and having the hardest time choosing between the A7IV and the new Nikon Z6iii. The 20fps RAW, the EVF, and the pre-capture on the Z6iii is really nice, plus the video specs, and the cheaper CF Express B cards. The Nikon wildlife lens lineup is extremely nice and diverse as well. On the other hand, the A7IV is quite a bit cheaper now (I've seen it for $1850 new, locally), is 33MP, has a bit better dynamic range, and IMO, has a significantly better non-wildlife focal length lens line up (Sigma / Sony GM 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, Sigma 24-70 f2.8 Gen II, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Tamron 70-180 f2.8, etc).
20fps would be really nice, as well as pre-capture! Cheaper CF Express type B cards are also a big win. It seems like a pretty difficult choice between the Nikon and Sony. I think you’ll be pretty happy with either choice. Good luck, and thank you for commenting!
Oh yeah I have a question.. what metering mode are you using thanks!
I typically stick to multi metering mode. I shoot in manual with auto ISO and a dial programmed for exposure compensation. This allows me to quickly adjust the exposure. Most of my images are slightly underexposed to preserve the highlights, and I brighten them up in post-processing. Thanks for commenting!
@@CurtisSnapshot Oh thank you man!!!
Great video mate and agree 100%. I run the same exact setup as you and the only time I will change is when/if the new Sony A1 get announced !!!
Thanks so much! The a7iv really hits the sweet spot for me. Of course, there’s always that dream camera out there, but for now, this setup does everything I need and then some.
There’s a lot to cover with a camera like this, so I’d love to hear your thoughts! Leave a comment below, as your insights could really help someone decide if the Sony a7IV is the right camera for them or not.
Awesome! 🤩 I learned alot!
I’m glad you found some useful info, thank you for commenting!
Probably the two worst features of the camera is 10 frames per second these days is a deal breaker for me and rolling shutter makes images useless otherwise fantastic camera.
That’s completely fair, and I forgot to mention the blackout between photos with this camera. (Although, It might be my lack of a fast enough card.) I often lose track of birds in flight when I fire off a burst of photos and the screen blacks out between shots.
Sony a7RV is the perfect companion 😁
yeah, the extra 2.5 stops of stabe and the additional resolution is what made me upgrade from a7iv to a7rv.
Awesome choice! I definitely want to try out a higher resolution camera one day.
Still has the 10 frames per second doesn't it?
@@AlexMcDougallPhotography yes, from what I’ve seen the a7rv is also 10 fps. I wonder if it retains its fps in uncompressed raw though!
that speech could’ve gotten you to regionals prolly
Everything well said….
Thank you, much appreciated!
Great job on the video! Lots of helpful information for someone considered this camera. Great presentation as well. Thumps up 👍
Thank you, I appreciate it. The idea of tackling a camera review was pretty daunting haha
The picture for the Heron was totally worth it! Totally! Great work! What us photographers will do for a photo, eh? I love the stare down. LOL.
The Great Blue Heron is one of my favourite birds to photograph, so having cold, soaking wet feet was a small price to pay! Thank you so much for commenting, I'm really glad you enjoyed this one!
Nice...Thanks for the info.......I think I will pass on the TC with the 200-600.
I’m glad you found the video helpful, thanks for commenting!
Great video!! =) Maybe you photographers can help me out; Im looking for a telezoom to catch both airshows and wildlife (on a budget). I narrowed down my findings to this Sony 200-600, the 150-600 DN Sports from Sigma, and the 150-500 from Tamron (probably too short). But from what Ive read, the Sony manages to keep optical sharpness all over the range. You can also get extenders, 1.6 or 2.0x for it. The lens is durable and gives a pro impression. Is there any negative sides of getting this lens for the a7 III? Hows the stabilisation? My a7 III with the 24-105 is a...well...it's a joke, stabilisation-wize. I'm concerned the stabilisation would be a problem? I'll take all input you have! 'Thanks in advance! =D
Thank you for watching and for the kind words! The Sigma 150-600mm is a great budget choice. While I don't have direct experience with it, Sigma lenses are generally well-built and reliable. The Sony 200-600mm, on the other hand, is incredibly sharp throughout its range and has a premium feel. As you mentioned, Sony is the only option for attaching teleconverters since they don't work with third-party lenses, nor are there third-party teleconverters for Sony E mounts. If you're considering teleconverters, watch some reviews on them. The 1.4x TC works well with the 200-600, but the 2x TC reduces the lens’s sharpness and autofocus speed quite a bit. I can't speak for the stabilization performance of the a7 III, but my a7 IV and 200-600 have pretty good stabilization. It’s not complete magic, at long focal lengths, you’ll definitely see some movement, but it’s generally smoother. Stabilization performs much better for photos compared to video. Hopefully I have provided some helpful insights for you, happy shooting!
@@CurtisSnapshot Thank you, are we talking about the contemporary Sigma or the sport? The Sony might be a bit heavy but so it's all so the sport Sigma...
@rymdskrotet not sure if you were still looking for information on this, but in recently purchased the Sigma 150-600 for myself after renting and liking it so much. I can say that it's an excellent lens in its own right. The stabalization is great, Zooming in and out using the barrel is convenient, and I like the images I'm able to get out of it overall. The one potential downside I'd say is the limitation of its max focal length being 600. Most times it's more than enough but there are times where it isn't and that's where I feel like the Sony comes in with its ability to use teleconverters. If you truly care about getting the most distance you can, then the Sony is the better choice. If not then, the Sigma is an excellent t option especially since you wont have to buy a bag that can fit a didgeridoo into it.Heres to hoping Sony gets rid of its restrictions on third party manufacturers making teleconverters.
Thank you for including the camera setting you used for each shot!
I'm really thinking of going to sony. I have a Canon 6d mk11 dslr. A 70-200 L being my most expensive lens. I'm thinking of getting. A7 iv. 70-200 2.8 G 200-600 G 2x converter. Vertical grip 50mm 2.8 OSS About 12k.... I want mirrorless and sony so bad
Sounds like a dream kit! I've been shooting with the A7 IV and the 200-600 for a little over two years now - zero regrets!
amazing video
Thank you!
I recently had the opportunity to get my hands on a 100-400 GM together with both 2x and the 1,4 TC. Best combo i ever had in my hands, superior IQ and great results! With 1,4 TC sharper than the 200-600 without TC!
I have heard lots of good things about pairing teleconverters with GM glass, that sounds like a really awesome combination!
wow incredible video once again curtis, i have the exact same camera setup as you too i have the sony 200-600mm lens with sony a7iv <3
Awesome to hear we're using the same setup, It's such a versatile combo for capturing wildlife!

can i come live with you PLEASE. The birds are so friendly there and the woodland looks so much better there than it does here 😓
Even my A7 r4 is not having eye auto focus for birds
Hello from Sweden I just need to say that I have found my new inspiration channel 👍😀👍
Thank you so much for your kind words. I’m really glad to hear that my channel has become a source of inspiration for you!
What about x2 with 200-600, have you ever tried it? It's gonna be really bad?
I haven’t tried the 2x teleconverter with the 200-600 myself, largely because I couldn’t find many positive reviews on that combination. From what I’ve learned using the 1.4x TC, I think using a 2x TC would make capturing sharp photos unnecessarily difficult. That said, I’m open to other opinions-teleconverters can be very subjective, and it really comes down to what works for you and how you work with them.
You should name the birds in your videos a d photos. Still nice video.
Thank you for the suggestion, I can see how that would be helpful for videos like this one, that have an assortment of species. I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
What is your favorite heron species to photograph?
That’s a really tough choice, because there’s heron species I really want to see and photograph. I’ll make it easy on myself though, the Great Blue Heron is the main subject I have learned wildlife photography with, and it’s given me some pretty amazing moments in the past! I see the green heron in your profile photo, and that’s a close contender!
@@CurtisSnapshot nice! , and the green heron in my profile is actually a picture I took myself!
@@jaurijantzi424 very nice!
