thank you.
I’m glad you enjoyed!
27:33 the first time I heard an alarm call (from squirrels) was when I saw my first Coyote in Toronto on one of my first every wildlife outings! It's a moment I know I will never forget, and really pushed me into this world of photography. This was an amazing video like always Curtis, can't wait to see what else you'll be up to in 2025!
That’s an awesome first wildlife outing, and a heck of a way to kick things off haha! Super exciting. Really glad you enjoyed the video, and I hope you have even more successful outings this year!
Amazing
Thank you!
Loved every second of it! The story telling here is rad, and the shots/videos are just perfect! Thanks for sharing them with us!
Thank you, I really appreciate the kind words, and I'm glad you enjoyed!
Is Af tracking good? A7iv
Coming from the A6000 and A7II, I find the AF tracking on the A7IV to be great. I’m sure newer and more expensive models are even better, but this camera really blew me away when I started using it.
Hey Curtis! Love your videos and how relatable you are. I’m really curious how you made and added the sound of the bumblebee that was buzzing around the screech owl? It sounds really good and I would love to take more video but it never sounds good
Thank you, I really appreciate that! I got all my "bee" sounds from Epidemic Sound, then trimmed them down to the specific buzzes I liked. I faded the audio in and out where it made sense, such as when the bee buzzed into the log, and I think I even added a bit of a muffle effect when it went inside! In general, my wildlife clips tend to sound pretty bland, so I always try to find nature soundscapes that fit the scene. I usually layer multiple sounds to create a more natural atmosphere that matches what I remembered hearing in the moment. Definitely give video another try, it's a lot of fun once you find your style!
@ ahhh cool. I’ll definitely have to look into Epidemic Sound, see if I can create some audio as good as yours.
@@zachlahr329 lots of options out there, just happens to be the one I’ve been using. Good luck!
Such a great summary of your year. As I was watching, I kept remembering watching the original videos. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much, that’s awesome! I really appreciate you being part of the channel for so long.
Incredible video Curtis!! Wishing you many more encounters in 2025!
Thank you so much! Wishing you all the best on your journey this year as well!
Try nikon z6 iii......
I'd love to try out other setups, but I'm pretty invested in what I have now. - Hopefully in the future though!
What app do you use to identify diffrent bird sounds?
I use Merlin Bird ID by Cornell lab. I find it extremely useful, it can tell you what birds are chirping. It's also easy to upload a photo and have it tell you what the bird is. This is pretty much how I learn on the go. Thanks for commenting!
Amazing video as always Curtis. I shared your A Year of Wildlife Photography Video on my Substack so that other photographers and lovers of bird life and nature can enjoy your videos too
Thank you so much for sharing, that means a lot! I'm really glad you've been enjoying all the videos.
Absolutely fantastic video Curtis!!
Curtis that shot of the eagle with the crow was epic!!!
Thank you! That was such an exciting and unexpected moment to capture, glad you enjoyed it!
For owls this season is the perfect season for looking for snowy owls and short eared owls, these are found in fields and farms
I definitely have to give that a better try before the seasons is up, I haven’t had any luck yet! Thanks for commenting!
Wow! Great year!
Thank you, Im glad you guys enjoyed the video! 😊
You make awesome videos! Good luck with 2025! I see the majority of your photos are taken at 1/1000 sec shutter speed. Do you keep the OSS on or off. I bought the Sony 200-600mm recently, but was not getting very sharp images even on the tripod and sent it back for an exchange. I was getting decently sharp at F8.0, but F6.3 was bad. Hopefully, the new copy will be better.
@@iShootWild Thank you so much! I will bump up the shutter speed for fast action or lower it for low-light situations, but 1/1000 is definitely my sweet spot when I have good light to work with. I keep the OSS on about 90% of the time, on mode 1. I’ve heard of others having issues with their copy of the 200-600, so I hope that’s all it was and that the new copy solves the problem, because it’s a great lens! Best of luck and happy shooting!
Wow.. it has been a terrible few days ... Then boom a new hour long Curtis Snapshot video. So awesome! So glad you produce these amazing videos. Very inspiring!

@@CurtisSnapshot Pleasure make sense close it down a couple of stops to have the images sharper. anyway I use mostly my a6600 and i have a 70-350 but I am really curious on how could be the a6600 plus 200-600 per 1.4 per my 1.5 crop factor of my a6600 Would i be able on your point of view to use it on basball games for example? with my actual setup i have a 70-350 whic is a 105-525mm on a full frame but with that 200-600 i would have a 300-900mm and moltiplied 1.4 i would have a 420-1260mm which is a gazillion zoom, my honest better workaround would be knowing if some camera companies gifted us with a 1.4 or a 2.0 af multiplier for e-mount apsc so i could keep my compact setup and still have a similar gazilionaire boombastic zoom. Thanks buddy, I have seen reviews that the 2x plus the 200-60 is not as good as it performs with you the 1.4x. really apreciate it.
I was wondering what focal length you used most with the 55-210mm lens on the duck photos? Thanks again!
Hey! I just looked through the images, and I mostly shot at 210mm. I did occasionally pull back to around 50-100mm when the ducks got really close. Since this is a crop sensor camera and lens, the full-frame equivalent is 315mm. Thanks for commenting! Hope the lens search is going well for you.
Hey, man, I am interested in wildlife photography and wanted to know what lens/focal length I should use. I have a low budget and currently own a Canon RF50mm 1.8f lens (I have a canon camera, but im still wondering if you have any suggestions). Thanks, and I enjoy your videos!
Hey! Thanks for watching and for your question. I’d recommend something in the 400mm to 600mm range. A 400mm is a great starting point, giving you solid reach for distant or small subjects while still being manageable in weight and size. Personally, I found that 400mm sometimes left me wanting more, so a 600mm can offer extra flexibility for different wildlife encounters. That said, wildlife photography can be done at a wide variety of focal lengths. No matter what gear you use, practice and patience make the biggest difference, so go with whatever suits your budget. I'm sure there are some great beginner-friendly videos on Canon lens recommendations. I hope this helps a little bit and good luck on your wildlife photography journey!
@@CurtisSnapshot Thanks so much for the detailed and well thought out response!
It's our provencale bird and it flys across the ocean just to be netted with big dip nets and eating. I didn't know about this until I was watching a golden Ramsey show he had a few years back and they were netting them and eating them.
I didn't know that either!
I'm really enjoying binge watching your videos right now 😅 it really makes me want to get out but sadly my wife is under going cancer tests and treatment due to a lose of feeling in her leg so I have to stay home with her 😔
I'm really glad you’re enjoying the videos, and that they can bring you some peace during such a difficult time. Wishing you both strength and good health.
@CurtisSnapshot thankyou 🤗 I actually managed to get out for an hour so I went down my local creek and photographed ring neck parakeets and a few wading birds😁 your videos inspired me 🤗 and thankyou for the kind words 🤗
@@JwelshPhotography awesome, that sounds like loads of fun, glad you got out for a bit!
I just bought one of those chest straps for my videos 🤗 I think they give a really good perspective for viewers. Do you use a power bank or something for phone battery or does yours last the whole trip? Great video by the way 🤗
Thankfully my phone battery holds up really well! I normally get through a full day of shooting. My GoPro on the other hand, only lasts about an hour, and I don’t usually carry a power bank. Thanks for commenting, really glad you’re enjoying these!
What about the 2.0?
From the reviews I have seen, the 2.0x teleconverter doesn't pair well with the 200 - 600 in most situations. So, going with the 1.4x TC seemed like a safer option, while still getting just a bit more reach out of the lens, as well as increasing its magnification at the minimum focusing distance. Thanks for commenting, hope this helps!
@ thank you so much!!
The wonderful thing about Newfoundland is there are no bad pictures . It’s just so beautiful

Here is a challenge: 1) silhouette photo during the "blue hour" 2) high key photo 3) low key photo 4) bird in flight photo 5) behavior photo 6) clean background photo 7) close subject photo 8) small subject in frame photo 9) urban bird photo 10) wild bird photo
Thats a solid idea and a great way to practice new techniques! Thanks for sharing.

I can relate to that, especially during the winter months! Pushing through, and finally having a some good outing is the best feeling! Thank you for commenting.
poor Canuck's....cant say the word OUT no matter how hard they try ...its so sad! Ill start a GoFundMe for your speech therapy!
im here because i focus on video, i use a Sony A7S ii, (yep bout it new like 8 years ago, put it away with a few hours on it and now im finally back to using it) anyway i bought the Sigma 150-200, i live in Seattle and i use a rain hood, but it only took about 4 hours of recording to find moisture and dust in the lens (external zoom) plus no option for a teleconverter, my main subject is airplanes so i need reach in great light, i have the Sony 28-70 kit lens and the Sony 70-300 G, and even though its external zoom it is still sealed way better than the Sigma, maybe i got a bad one, but i returned it to Glazers, and now im about to get this lens w a 1.4 tele converter, im hoping the internal zoom helps my buddy let me borrow his for a weekend and its sharpness is about the same as the Sigma, i think the colors of the Sigma are a touch different but not better or worse, just different.
I've heard that the Sigma Contemporary lenses aren't fully weather-sealed. My Sigma 100-400 has collected a bit of dust inside, whereas my Sigma 24-70 Art lens has held up much better in the elements. Native lenses definitely seem to have the better weather sealing for the outdoor elements. I hope the teleconverter works out well for you if you end up going with it! Thanks for commenting!
I've noticed it's less problematic to worry about perfect sharpness and to concentrate on framing composition vertical/horizontal angle, settings, the picture, unless its a style the requires absolute perfection then it can work if you have everything else, "tack sharp" is for the geeks at photo sites that pixel peep, like you said that wide shot Of the duck great. So the worlds most famous successful photography/videographers worry less about perfect focus and focus on communication with images. I can take my 20D, at 8.2 megapixel camera from 2004 or my Canon t4i for video and walk out on the street or anywhere and shoot most Instagram phone photographers under the table...., It's not that I'm that good it's that so many people out there making money with pictures are that bad. I would say anyone that puts as much effort and practice into it as you can excel at photography or videography if they choose to do so And remember some of the world's most famous photographers didn't worry about tax sharpness all the time. are there situations where you want the pictures subject to be as sharp as possible? Of course! But sometimes the photo just needs to be taken
Totally agree, sharpness is important but not everything. Composition, storytelling, and understanding light make a big difference. It's something I'm always working on!
Thank you for showing us this awesome journey. Definitely looking forward to my next trip to photography the puffins. Keep making these great videos.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Enjoy your next trip to see the puffins, thanks for commenting!
