Front Insert Steel Bumper for a 2017 GX460
This build was part of a three part fab also including a rear bumper with double swingouts and rock sliders for this tough looking 2017 GX460.
The front bumper took a few days to bring together and turned out quite nicely. I used 3/16" plate steel for the back plate, the winch base and the sides and 1/8" steel for the fairlead plate, the top strip plate and the outer panels. The round tubing on the sides is 1.5" steel tube.
A lot of the measurements are listed throughout the video but really the specifics are going to be dependent on how you decide to build the bumper.
For the finish I used the 36 grit sanding pads on my angle grinder in a quick pass to rough up the surface. I then cleaned the steel with an acetone soaked microfiber towel to remove any dust and oils. I first used the steel-it paint with a brush to dig in to all the welds and crevices, then let that sit to cure a bit for 15minutes. Then grabbed the aerosol spray can and sprayed a good coat over everything. I let that cure for about half an hour and then hit it with another coat of the aerosol spray.
Here are a number of the products and items I used in this build...

      Ummm, I hope you don’t use grease on a silicone gasket. If anything you’d use a silicone lubricant. That’s totally optional though and it’s not to seal the gasket, that’s what the gasket is for, it’s to let it slide a bit if required. I don’t need that so didn’t use it and it worked perfectly the way I did the repair. But thanks for your thoughts.

      Hi Skye, thanks for checking out the video. Great question re the DOM tubing. I made a comment on one of the videos I’ve done that the DOM was way harder to bend than the erw. I ended up bending/crushing the bracket (that the jack sits on) in the bender so fabricated a thicker version (although the affordable bender ppl sent me a replacement bracket). I’m away at our Colorado mountain home at the moment so can’t check but I think I also ended up using a bigger jack in there to handle the extra stress/effort. I think it came with an 8 ton and I blew that apart and put in a 12 ton that just fits. I think that’s what I recall doing

    Can I ask why you used the square tubing instead of round for the swing arms. Wouldn’t it have been more aesthetic looking keeping everything round.

    • @OffroadGrind
      @OffroadGrind 2 місяці тому

      Hi Ron that’s a good question. I’ve seen Swingarm on both round and square/rectangular tubing. I made my first rear bumper Swingout with rectangular tubing as I wanted to mimic the look of the square tube rock sliders I made for my truck. Everyone that’s asked me to make a Swingout for them since has asked for either the square or rectangular tubing. Vs the round tubing they all have different strengths re torsion and impact etc but for a tire carrier that’s locked in none of that matters, at least not on the bigger sizes of tubing I’m using for these builds. I’d rather over build something and know it’s going to last that push the lower strength limits by going too light and then having it fail. But I’ve seen Swingarm a in round tubing and they look nice too.

    I'm going to follow your lead! You wouldn't happen to have the dimensions of the 2x2 pieces you welded to the cross member would you? I'm not to clear how you measured to keep the bumper cover clear. Also, do you think you could have used a different closing latch to keep the swing-arm closed? Seems like that is the only area that you really didn't cover as closely. Thanks for helping the community here! Best!

    • @OffroadGrind
      @OffroadGrind 3 місяці тому

      Hi Doug. Thanks for checking out the video and glad you liked it. Since I typically do everything custom each build tends to be a bit different. This is one of the first Swingarm I made and I’ve since done them a number of different ways. I still really like that 4xInnovations hinge but usually use a u-bolt latch as a closure. I can typically make a smaller opening in the bumper with the u-bolt latch. The 4x latch is really pricey, and a lot more involved to install so I don’t typically use that anymore unless people really want it and don’t mind paying way more to have it made with that system. I just finished a gx470 Swingarm and will get around soon (I hope) to getting that video up. I’ve been busy renovating our house in the sw Colorado mountains so that’s taken a bunch of my time lately. For the tire carrier post the height of the post is determined by the location you’d like the wheel to sit. But generally I have it at about 19 inches tall and the angled supports are 15 inches longest measurement with the ends both cut at 45°.

    love your fabrication videos, curious to know if the hinge is still holding strong? I used the same hinge however now i have a feeling should have used a double shear to balance the weight properly.

    • @OffroadGrind
      @OffroadGrind 3 місяці тому

      Hello Sir. Thanks for checking out the video. I’ve made bumpers and swing outs with both styles of hinges, this pin/axle style and the double shear. They’re all still working well as far as I know. I would say the double shear design is stronger (which is why I usually use that design these days) but keep in mind the majority of the time the hinge is being used it’s not jostling down an offroad trail at full extension. It’s just being opened while the truck is stopped. If the (other) end of the Swingarm is properly secured so the arm is locked in place then there isn’t that much force torquing on the hinge itself. Now, how you have the pin end of the hinge anchored might be an issue but if that’s properly secured and the other end of the Swingarm is locked down then you should be ok. I did sell the initial bumper I made with that style hinge and went with the double shear on the new bumper/swing outs but only because I can easily make a new bumper for myself and wanted a setup that was higher and lighter.

    Hey I have same issues on my 05 4Runner just noticed this issue but have to drive about 300 miles to get home before I can get this to my repair shop. Should I be okay to drive ? So far noticed oils leaking exactly where your are. And been checking my oil levels so far not that bad. Should I just continue to monitor the oil before I drife back home next Wednesday?

      I don’t imagine that much oil is coming out so if you check the engine oil level and top it up if required then I imagine you’d be fine. Mine was seeping for years before I finally got around to fixing it.

    Gonna try this on the GX 470, chasing the P0456 code! Thanks for the tip and the vid!

    Thanks for the vid! Did you need to drain the oil or the coolant beforehand?

      No need to drain anything. I checked the coils and spark plugs to see if they needed replacing but they were good so just popped them back in.

    have you had any problems with this mod?

      No I don’t think so. I just set it and have forgotten about it. I rarely use the fog lights living here in Texas but when I go to check them every once in a while they’re working.

    Maybe I missed it but what gauge of steel did you go with for the swing out arm?

    Appreciate the tip. I’m just beginning to go down this P0456 rabbit hole now, started with the 50$ OEM cap this morning.

      Did the new cap help? I am as well going down the rabbit hole

      @@1surfpesca_ yup, it fixed the issue. I also cleaned the lip of the filler tube as suggested in the vid just before I put the new cap on, so I’ll never know what it was for sure
