    Mine did not sustain in the wind. The tent spikes that it came with do not support the tent very well and the latches came off those spikes very easy. Also they are way to thin and pull upwards causing the tension on the tent to lose tension causing collapses. I was going to return it after it collapsed on me but will give it another chance as i got better pegs.

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide
      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide 4 дні тому

      Yes. The easiest way to update the tent stakes is to buy aluminum rod at the Hardware store. Cut and bend in a vise or get foot long nails at the hardware store. Good luck.

  • @pinnerspinner8389
    @pinnerspinner8389 4 дні тому

    Tent is good but the pegs it came with do not secure the tent very well in mild wind. The latches come off the pegs very easily when the wind picks up. I was going to return mine after it collapsed on me while i was in it but will give it another chance after i bought better tent spikes.

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide

      Yes. The tent stakes that came with it are a joke. This Winter 3 Minutes will do a small series on making good tent stakes with $20 of aluminum rod from your local hardware store. Thanks for watching.

    And I often start my pole too far forward to have it do any good. I use the pole as a rudder with most retrievals, probably slowing me down but sometime its needed. I rub the pole along the boat as much as possible unless I'm trying to push it a bit to the side one way or the other. Great stuff as usual, Lisa.

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide
      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide 5 днів тому

      That's a great point about using the pole as a rudder. If you’re touching the boat with the pole that’s making it track the straightest, going upstream or down. Thanks for watching!

  • @juliedavies3785
    @juliedavies3785 5 днів тому

    Brilliant video, love the third tip, I will definitely try that and see if I have been suffering from an unintended steer as I recover the pole. Another tip I could offer if I may, from a good friend of mine and experienced poler, Which ever direction the end of the pole out of the water is pointing, when you push, that is the direction you’ll go. If it’s up, you lift, if it’s not pointing forward, you won’t go forward. That has helped me immensely when I’ve struggled up some rock infested ditches as a sort of pole compass!

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide

    That's really interesting, I've never seen a tump used with a canoe before. Looks quite useful on a calm day. I'd be concerned in the wind...

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide
      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide 6 днів тому

      The biggest thing is to practice and have the right placement of the tump on the top of the head. Too far forward on the forehead and it could be dangerous in a slip or fall.

    • @CanadianBriar
      @CanadianBriar 5 днів тому

      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide thank you for your response! Yes, that makes sense regarding the tump line placement. I'm only 140 lbs, so I've found myself tipped over a few times with the canoe when a good gust comes up. In the Rockies they can be pretty sudden. 🤣

      @@3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide You know; I bought this book back in the 90's by a man named Garret Conover: Beyond the Paddle with a whole chapter about "The art of poling a canoe" (the book is from 1991). I was on a canoe trip to Canada when I saw this book in a bookstore. It was this chapter that inspired me to by the book with the intention to try out poling when I came home again. Well, there's another drill I need to incorporate into my practice! In all seriousness though, comparing a boat to skiing or riding a bike isn't necessarily fair. There's a lot more complexity in boat stability e.g. metacentric height, centre of gravity, waterplane area, free surface etc. But I shall endeavour to persevere nevertheless!

    • @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide
      @3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide 22 дні тому

      Maybe, but there is no Speed in poling. Skiing to me, which I’m terrible at, is terrifying because of the speed. Same, potentially with a bike. Poling has no speed. All you’re left with is timing and technique. I’m in. All in. Thanks for watching.
