These videos have made me feel so differently about the OT Camper - in some ways they may be about the most versatile canoe ever made. Glad I now have one!
Great video...I first read "Dangerous River" when I was 14. Reading it inspired me to try poling in a 15' aluminum canoe I bought at Simpson Sears. The results were less than satisfactory and a little wet but a learning experience nevertheless. Thanks
Sounds great. I harvest my poles May to mid June when the bark easily peels away from the tree. Then a good draw shave and a spoke shave and I’m all set. All the while you’re making good kindling too. I’m definitely doing an episode. Thanks for watching!
i’ve been teaching myself to pole in the shallow parts of the kennebec & even with all the logs I bump into have yet to fall. Sometimes i do pole from my knees when i’m going upriver against a very strong wind but that’s to make myself less of a sail it is harder
Great video. People forget how much balance it takes to walk or ride a bicycle, standing up in a normal touring canoe is not any harder it's just less familiar.
The Old Town Tripper and Camper are my favorites. I know they don’t make them anymore but a good one can be had in Facebook marketplace with a little patience. I know 2 Canadian Guides I trust who also teach Poling who say the Esquif PROSPECTOR 16 and 17 are good poling canoes. I like the lines of the HURON but the sides are a bit low mid ships. The MIRAMICHI 20 footer poles like a dream. I poled Salmon fishermen all around in that one. They also have an 18. Nice canoes…wow the price. Learning to pole isn’t very, well, nice to boats. They gotta be tough, it’s how you learn. Maybe cruise for a used one you won’t feel so bad about. Thanks for watching!
Well, there's another drill I need to incorporate into my practice! In all seriousness though, comparing a boat to skiing or riding a bike isn't necessarily fair. There's a lot more complexity in boat stability e.g. metacentric height, centre of gravity, waterplane area, free surface etc. But I shall endeavour to persevere nevertheless!
Maybe, but there is no Speed in poling. Skiing to me, which I’m terrible at, is terrifying because of the speed. Same, potentially with a bike. Poling has no speed. All you’re left with is timing and technique. I’m in. All in. Thanks for watching.
@@3_Minutes_With_a_Maine_Guide You know; I bought this book back in the 90's by a man named Garret Conover: Beyond the Paddle with a whole chapter about "The art of poling a canoe" (the book is from 1991). I was on a canoe trip to Canada when I saw this book in a bookstore. It was this chapter that inspired me to by the book with the intention to try out poling when I came home again. Since then I have forgoten all about the book and have tried poling only very little. I think you just inspired me to try it out again next summer.

I couldn’t agree more. Pull out that stern seat, and it’s the most versatile, tough, adaptable, go anywhere canoe there is! Thanks for watching.
I have been feeling the same about mine. All it needs is a different yoke so it's more comfortable to carry.
That was great! Thanks Lisa😊
Fantastic! Thank-you. Also "Dangerous River" is one of my Canadian Favourites! Good call back.

Thanks for sharing. I wish I could get you in one of my classes. Check out the poling videos coming up. It will help you with technique.
Thanks for the videos and encouragement Lisa. I have two red spruce trees that I'm going to fashion into poles this winter.

That’s great. I’d love to get you into one of my classes. Stay tuned. More poling techniques to come. Thanks for watching.
Great clips!! 🐾🙏🏻✌🏻🛶
Thank you kindly

Well said! Thanks for watching. We are poking a canoe, not building a rocket ship.
What are some common canoe models that you would recommend for poling?

I'll have to give that one an honesty try. Keep on pushing the flat bottom canoe! I wouldn't want any thing else.
Me neither. Thanks for watching.
I'm not sure you need a canoe at all. I'm sure you can dance down the river with that pole alone, noe getting wet at all😂
Well, I had some really good teachers. Just trying to pay it forward. Thanks for watching.
