Chiller Theater - A Rather Brisk Weekend In The Woods - October 4-6, 2024
My friend, Chris and I made last minute plans to spend a weekend along the North Country Trail in the lower reaches of the Allegheny National Forest. This was intended to be a “chill” weekend with just a short hike in as he has been battling severe knee pain all summer. Little did we know that “chill” would take on an entirely different meaning when low temperatures dropped 10+ degrees lower than forecast. On this trip a campfire became more than just “ambiance”, it was needed to stay warm. While packing, I debated taking my winter sleep system but decided against it. If I had, it would have been a much more comfortable weekend. But the challenges presented only serves to make the weekend memorable. Embrace the suck because someday you’ll look back on it with fondness.

Flip Floppin' Around In The Allegheny National Forest

(SUBSCRIBER ALERT: This is the same video I published previously. After watching it, I discovered there were some segments I neglected to edit). August 12, 2024 was a day that dawned bright and sunny. I decided it was a good day to hit the North Country Trail in the Allegheny National Forest. I left the house with no particular plan. I wanted to map the trail on my GPS in a couple of sections t...
North Country Trail - Sugar Bay to Hammond Run

On this adventure, I head back up north to Kinzua Country for a three day/two nighter on the North Country Trail. August 1, 2024 I departed from the Sugar Bay Trailhead on Route 321 and hiked just over 2.5 miles to a campsite along Hammond Run. The next day, I backtracked a bit to another campsite along the same waterway. My total mileage for this journey was only 5.1 miles. (I did a little aim...

16 hammock hangers converged on the Minister Creek Recreation for 4 days / 3 nights of food, fun and conversation. The weather was absolutely PERFECT with daytime temperatures in the high 70’s and lows in the mid to low 50’s. I finished my weekend by filling in a 3 mile stretch on the North Country Trail.
North Country Trail near Parker, PA - July 2, 2024

After nearly 3 weeks of stifling heat, I caught a break in early July to hit the trail. This day I chose to do an out and back flip flop in State Game Land 95. First, I went 3.6 miles (1.8 out and back) from Route 268 (not 368, as I say in the video once or twice) to Eldorado Road. After returning to my Jeep, I took the trail the opposite direction for .55 miles to Bear’s Mouth Bridge. That mad...
Triple Forks Group Camp

On Friday, May 23, I headed to the Minister Creek area of the Allegheny National Forest for what was supposed to be one night solo and one night of group camping. After hiking two miles in and setting up camp, one of the guys who is in the group arrived a day early. So we set up camp in the same spot. The next day, we moved over to the other side of the creek and waited for the rest of the crew...

NOTE: This is a reupload of a previous video. I found I had omitted what was to be the closing scene. ALSO - having watched it, I found that I had misspoke in the video. The campsite is actually the southernmost site in the Allegheny National Forest. Just a short hike that totaled only 4.2 miles. Current NCT mileage for 2024 is 104.24. #alleghenynationalforest #hike100nct #nationalscenictrail

I’m still here !!! I’m still clicking off the miles. I said a while back that I wasn’t going to record or share hikes unless they included overnight camping. Well…… people started asking me why I hadn’t posted to YT, if I was still hiking and if I was continuing my North Country Trail 100 mile attempt. So, here I am on a sunny Sunday walking off 6.4 miles. Year to date miles is now 68.75. I’m a...
North Country Trail - March 1, 2024

The month of March came in like a lamb in northwestern Pennsylvania. Every time the garage door was opened throughout my workday, sunshine and blue skies appeared. Despite being totally unprepared to take on any trail miles, I knew I had to at least take a few steps toward my 100 mile goal. To add to the lack of proper clothing or footwear for a hike, my phone did not get plugged in the night b...

On this frigid Sunday morning, I traveled to the trailhead on Guitonville Road, just south of Marienville. After meeting with some friends who had spent the night at the Cicely campsite for morning coffee, I ventured on to check out the beaver dams at Coon Creek. 2 miles out and back = 4 miles for the day. Year to date miles is now 36.6.

Saturday, February 17 dawned snowy and blustery. A stark contrast to the springlike conditions only a few days earlier. It was exactly the type of day I love to be out in. Itching for some outdoor time after having been a couch potato for the previous six weeks thanks to broken toes from a work accident, I considered long and hard just where and how far to go. I decided to keep it short and clo...

Hey Dave, nice video. I know it's supposed to be a privacy thing, but I could never understand the need for a lock on the handle. A simple barrell bolt on the inside of the door would suffice. And hey, I'm not even an MIT graduate.😂

Great tip on how close to the road some of those campsites are - something I forgot to mention in my video. Some of those do get hijacked by locals! Many years ago we ran into a backpacker on the Baker Trail (a second hand story) who told us about one shelter that the locals chased off backpackers on the weekends so they could have their beer parties.

Hey David, thanks for showing my old campsite along Nelse Run, you are right that is a very nice campsite. You got me planning next years adventure, those look like nice campsites along Hammond Run. Hopefully the SLOBS see this and get the hint! Too funny the saying on the bottom of the Mountain House bag. Nothing like a good chuckle to start your day. Still laughing!

Hey David, just an observation, that whole stretch where you guys hung for the weekend, there was pretty much 'nary any wood around to even have a twig fire. But there was enough wood piled up in the creek and along the banks to last for years even as busy as that place gets, I'm not including all the punkwood laying around on the ground. I had the luxury of smelling a punkwood fire all evening on Thursday. UGH! Oh the joys of camping! LOL.

My husband, now deceased, took me on this trail when we were newlywed. He grew up in Parker. While hiking that day, I nearly stepped on a copperhead. He stopped me right before my foot dropped. He had been there many times as a kid and thank goodness, knew what to watch for. Thanks for taking me back. Beautiful land.

I've been meaning to re-hike that very section. I went through there summer 2022 and had all sorts of camera trouble. By the time I got to all those amazing swimmin' holes only my cheap Kodak was working, and I got caught in a thunderstorm. I kept the video unlisted as it wasn't up to my standards. Checking google maps, Bears Mouth Bridge is over "North Branch Bear Creek", which flows out into Bear Creek proper. The NCT to Dead Crow Bridge follows the North Branch. I love the name Eldorado Road since Eldorado was my favorite John Wayne movie!

Hey David, you gotta watch your step when your coming to the road, isn't bad but us "older" farts need to watch out. Don't need to fall and break a leg only about 1/8 mile from the end. LOL Was there 2 years ago and trying to figure out where you camped at. Were you past the NCT turnoff on the loop trail? Beyond where the loop trail makes a hard right towards the one creek that empties into Minister Creek?

The place we were at as a group is after you cross the little bridge at Triple Forks, instead of bearing right and following the NCT, you continue on the Minister Creek Trail like you’re heading towards the overlook as if you were doing the loop counterclockwise. You just go up there 1/4 mile or so. GPS waypoint for the site is 41.64467, -79.17102

Hey David, just rewatched, that section of trail between Sarvey Hill Rd. (mile marker 164.) and White Oak Dr. (mile marker 162.5.) I think the Clarion Chapter of the NCT needs to go and remark the trail. Unless it's because it's on private property, all those spray painted markings on the trees look very confusing if your not from around there.

One of my favorite places! When I’m there at our camp, I ride my bike from Emlenton to Rockland Station. I like to hike up to freedom Falls. It’s such a beautiful place. I love it there in the spring time when all of the Trillium are in bloom if you were ever up on route 38 heading towards Butler there’s a great place to go and have, good food and a cold beer. It’s called The Beer Garden. My cousin owns that place it’s very close to the North Washington rodeo grounds.❤
