Exhausting Life
United States
Приєднався 3 гру 2020
I have spent the majority of my adult life in the pursuit of engineering & fabricating MagnaFlow exhaust systems for nearly everything with a motor. These hands have worked on all sorts: Monster trucks, movie stunt cars, TV cars & just good old garage projects owned by first time car enthusiasts and even industry icons & legends. I found that there's something in common with all & it's not just the search for more horsepower & that sound that makes you grin from ear to ear ... It's about making something meaningful & expressing yourself inside of our diverse automotive community.
Here, I get to share some of the car people stories & interactions but most of all, apply a little engineering know how, to make my own personal projects come to life. Expect detailed How-To videos on my projects & lots of gearhead chatter on anything else.
Just here EXHAUSTING life's resources in this 24/7 EXHAUSTING lifestyle, while "EXHAUSTING" any project vehicle I can get a MagnaFlow pipe & muffler on.

DIY or DIFM - When Do It Yourself May Not Be An Option, How Do You Modify Your Vehicle?
I get asked pretty often about how to deal with determining when to "Do It Yourself" or when to resort to "Do It For Me," so I am covering how to evaluate your situation and what to do to make sure you don't waste your valuable time and money.
For whatever reasons you may have, sometimes you need to call in a professional to do a modification or installation on your build. Sometimes it's because of the required tools, other times it's about the skill set or technical nature of the install. It can even be as simple as just not having the available time or the facilities to do the work, but what we want to try avoid is just misjudging what's involved and putting yourself in a pickle.
It doesn't matter just how much experience you have, there are so many variables in trying to figure out the best path for your build and no matter how much we want to do it all, we all need some HELP sometimes and enlisting the right professionals can make a huge difference.

I’ll let you in on a secret, form lights are made by VLAND lighting. They relabel the box and sell them to you for double. Thank me later ✌🏻
Your content is awesome! ! Are you interested in cooperating on related products?
Did you ever have time to get the King shocks revalved? If so, curious if you'd be willing to share the specs of the valving shims you went with.
@darkscorpion5714 i will try to find the build sheet, but I may have sent it to the new owner with the truck.
@@exhaustinglife Awesome, that would be great if you could, thanks
Very nice job, thank you sir !
Very informative... Great. I have one question for you. Can adding an extra overload/helper leaf increase any height?
Hey! I noticed your center console has USB ports and a 110v outlet @9:50 is that a mopar add on or is it trim specific?
It is a trim specific option however can be added via MOPAR parts. It is included with all Rubicon JL Wranglers
I’m sorry to bother but where did you get your fog lights
The fog lights are Baja Designs XL-R Sport lights and depending if you have a ZR2 Bison (like mine) or non-Bison these will fit the round holes with a number of different mounting kits. The exact lights are the Baja Designs XL-R Sport in Amber (wide) product #570015 If you want the mounting kit that i have its an AEV Conversions product #38060000AA
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Happy to help out. I could not find a complete video that had all the tricks and tips in one place.
Wtf is a puck?
if you are referring to the alignment "puck" for the rear track bar mount it is a proprietary part specifically created for the AEV product line. Looking at the instruction guide is its part "8" in the diagram - www.aev-conversions.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/AEV30344AL.pdf
I just purchased the AEV Engine Skid Plate. I also have a diff drop. My question is, what size spacer did you use
I made a 0.50" (1/2") spacer our of some 1.25" aluminum round bar stock.
One of the best auto part videos overall I've seen in clarity and shooting detail! I end up driving around with 3-5 folks in mine often enough to probably never install something like this, but it's still cool to see the options.
Thank you and I just tried to create what I felt was useful to me in my build.
Those Duracell generators especially the 1800 watts are a waste of money and cannot power what they claim. I used it on a flat 55” led tv with an Xbox console and a router to find out it only lasted 15 minutes so I changed it for another one and it did the same thing. I do not recommend it. Waste of money and time.👎👎👎
Thanks for the guide! Made installing easy when I looked at it and went into panic mode. Thanks for making me slow down and think. ❤
It's definitely not a difficult installation but its one that just needs a little focus and attention.
Walmart has better prices..buy full synthetic
What exhaust work did you do to this? You mentioned it but can’t seem to find it. Looking to add an intake and exhaust to my 2019zr2 v6. Thanks!
It is running the MagnaFlow Overland Series cat-back exhaust. It's a straight through 3" system that has no annoying drone and helps support every thing from stock to the supercharged powertrain I had.
I am wondering what are the 3 or 4 upgrades that weight the most? When I see this video, it feels like you are traveling compared to other people (rooftop tent etc.) pretty light. Once I have my new ordered ZR2 (not Bison), I will test lie in the bed to see if it fits me and if I could get a topper like you had. I do like it for the reasons you mentioned. It's so much more resistant against wind and weather impacts in general. And the biggest pro is that you can stealth camp!
Travelling light was a big part of the program. I by no means created a feather weight but I also tried to respect the maximum payload recommendations of the truck which were 1250 lbs. (If i recall correctly) The biggest thing to remember is that that OEM payload includes passengers (yes, you the driver too,) cargo / equipment (everything in the back seat, in the bed and on it) and tongue weight. 1250 lbs goes fast. The fiberglass topper route saves a bit of weight compared to a full size RTT. I think the ARE z Series topper I had was 140 lbs. vs a typical full size RTT tips the scales nearer 200 and 250 lbs is not uncommon. The 35" spare tire with bead lock and Rig'd Ultra swing were a good deal of the weight (100 lbs for the wheel and tire, 65 for the swing + another 10-25 for the rotopax or powertank) The Roam rooftop cases with recover gear, tools and camp supplies clicked off another 120-130 lbs. The rear seat deletes and goose gear dropped about 45 lbs but my load out easily ate that up.
@@exhaustinglife thanks for replying. I am with you, the maximum payload capacity is not a lot, that's why I am sometimes a bit surprised when I see some setups. It feels like their weight must be through the roof. I am still waiting for my allocation to order the Truck. It's now about 1.5 months of waiting...
Great job. There’s a USA company that makes platforms out of aluminum. Veteran owned.
Would love to DIY, but at 76, DIFM is usually the way i have to go………..
No shame in that. We all have our limitations and available time but that's why there are professionals.
Did you integrate the second camera and if so where and how were you able to mount it? Thanks
I've been looking into a pick up truck for off roading to take my dirt bikes so i was wondering is it posible to fit in a dirt bike in a jeep with the back seat delete🤔
Good question. I would imagine the front wheel would have to come off but ... maybe?
I may have skipped past it, but has anything been done with the AFM system? Was it tuned out? Physically deleted? Or still all in tact?
@@Brianthejohnson the Mallet calibration shuts off AFM as a requirement of supercharging.
Your narration reminds me of The Red Green Show, and that is a good thing! Thanks for the videos!
Ha! I haven't seen that show in ages... it has the full audience laugh track ..I should look into that.
@@exhaustinglife you’re doing fine just the way it is! Remember, if the women don’t find you handsome, they should at least find you handy!
Excellent engineering explanations Rich!! While I had reached a conclusion that I probably still want a geometry correction bracket even with all adjustable control arms, stumbling onto your video was a comforting confirmation of my decision. Of the countless videos I watched in researching a custom lift, NO one addressed WHY one might want to use a geometry correction bracket even if using adjustable control arms. Almost all implied that it's an either or...really had to read between the lines to contemplate that I might need both. Thank You for this video and confirming that I'm not crazy for thinking I might want/need both.
The geometry correction is something all can benefit from however some arms introduce different bends and arc paths so you just need to be careful and cycle the suspension without the springs to make sure evening clears though out the new geometry and new arms.
Did you lower the psi at all?! I feel my front is stiff. Thinking of going from 200 psi to 150 psi
If you are referring to the nitrogen charge, no it remains the same pressure. The front adjustable valve on the reservoir should allow more flow to soften the ride.
I've been following since your Bison build. I'm an owner of a '19 ZR2. What are the bags you use for storage?
Thanks for keeping up with the channel. Almost all the gear bags are 5.11 "Tactival Convoy Packing Cubes" and they came in several sizes but we're intended for luggage. I just found the sizes very handy. I think a good many are discontinued except the DOPP variant, which is still a good size.
Do you have the numbers for the shocks ?
The ZR2 has a specific model as does the variant with the adjusters. 2017+ ZR2 with Adjusters (FRONT) 25001-192A 2017+ ZR2 with Adjusters (REAR) 25001-193A
Better use dexos in your Chevy. I didn’t use it for 20,000 miles and started drinking quart’s of oil. It stopped after two oil changes. Still black after 3,000 miles
Mobil 1 is dexos approved.
It would be great to see the bottom of the camera well, where the SD card goes in, the reset button, etc - on mine I don't see exactly where this is, covered by a plastic tab?
Yes. there is a panel along the back that covers the access to the card.
I'm guess you don't use the back seats much as it'd be a hassle to do this every time you want to go camping.
I never use the back seats so it fit my situation but if I had to put them back it's very easy to do that in 30 mins.
Great video. Can you do just the 2 seats an not the trunk? Anyone knows is that is an option?
Thank you for the video just finished the install and it looks great
Glad it helped
Did you notice any loss in performance after the installation of the snorkel?
If you are referring to its use in my supercharged application, I had to modify the OEM air box in accordance with Mallet's instructions. Without the air box modifications it would pose a CFM intake limit under the higher boost setting i was running.
Yes, they do work, especially if you have a 3.5 lift and 37" tires. It is awesome
I felt they were worth while, especially at the pricepoint.
good job !
Thanks!
Made a hole through passanger fender liner so it can get a bit better air
Interesting
I'm installing my Mallett this weekend. I don't think it will be much of an issue with adaptation, but I purchased my truck with the GMPP CAI. Based on preliminary inspection, I'm confident that the changes required with that airbox are pretty simple.
Good luck! and let us know how it turned out.
@@exhaustinglife It turned out pretty amazing! I will likely be unlocking the TCM to get the shifting dialed in just a little better, but the driveability is way better. The airbox had plenty of room to run the PCV lines and I used breather filters in the ends of the hoses to keep them from sucking in debris. One tip I would suggest is that while you have your intake manifold off during the installation, it's not a bad idea to replace your fuel injector nozzle seals (2 little O-rings per injector). They're a known failure point on the 3.6 and the fuel rails are way down in the valley. It's not much extra work and the parts are cheap, as is the installation tool. If they fail after the fact, you'll be pulling out that supercharger...not exactly fun. Otherwise, I'm totally happy. It tows way better and gets better fuel economy in all conditions...other than when I'm stomping in it. With the massively improved acceleration and passing ability, it behaves like I have a hearty V8 under the hood, which is what the Bison really needs.
If you didnt go with a Camburg upper control arm...what would you go with?
My only other choice was at the time the GMPP UCA. The whole reason I went to Camburg to encourage them to develop this part was because I didn't want anything else that was available in the market at the time. I wanted an adjustable upper to compensate for the caster needs and still have adjustment to minimize bump steer with extended geometry (when you remove the droop stop.) I also wanted to to have the larger uniball (1.25") that no one else offered for the Colorado / Canyon UCA market. Ultimately, I wanted to replace the Uniball with one of their Camburg 1.25" X Joints (High Articulation Sealed Ball Joint) in the same arm and was hoping if they saw enough interest the Kinetik Billet Version. If I didn't push for the Camburg part I would have been looking for the features I mentioned above: 1. Billet construction 2. Adjustable pivots (heim) at the frame 3. Sealed high articulation ball joint
Just realized I have to remove my HD hinges =(
I am not sure that you do. Most of the HD hinges are fine so long as the center plate area can allow for the connection point of the turn buckle that attaches to the swing. Send me some pictures or a link to the kind of HD set-up and ill see if I can overlay some data. I'm pretty good with CAD.
Thank you for the video. I tried changing the fluid about a week ago and didn't know what to do with some of the things being attached to the diff. I'll be changing the fluid pretty soon now.
Glad it helped out.
Just knowing how much the AEV bison flares cost from GM I couldn't do it lol I went with BDS 4-inch kit I'm also running the truxxs 1.5 level and the zone 1.25 body lift great video !!!
There are lots of way to get bigger tires to fit but each comes with a cost. Either more money or a sacrifice to geometry or function.
Whoever designed the way you have to remove half the vehicles panels to replace the headlights should be sacked drawn and quartered and sued by every Colorado owner.
It certainly is a chore and I am a little spoiled having come from the full size world where two pull pins after opening the hood was all that was needed.
Dimensions would have been helpful. What is the depth in inches? Trying to determine if it can accommodate the blackstone 17” griddle without hanging over the edge.
pls ineed that tirerod sleeve my colorado zr2 i want order pls where i buy that
Peak Suspension makes 2 kinds for this truck.
So that leftover bit of oil that’s what I’m supposed to have left over
It just depends on how much you are able to drain. How flat the ground is when you drain and the temperature will determine how much actually comes out. This amount is what I typically have left but that's based on what puts the oil level to 3/4 the hashed area on the dipstick on level ground after about 30 mins. You should be bathing what's left on your measurement at the dipstick.
Outside temperature has nothing to do with how much oil comes out. Engine temperature does that. Warm engine when changing oil.
I don't think I said "outside" temperature anywhere. Yes, physics agrees hot oil flows faster and it's why I mentioned it.
Been thinking about picking one of these up soon...thanks for doing all the scientific stuff!
It's very difficult to find anything in the aftermarket that lives up to the build and test standards of an OE lamp assembly. For my 2020 Bison, I stuck with the OE housings, but vastly improved the lighting performance with LED replacement bulbs from Lasfit, which seemed to be the best ones I could find. I've been completely happy with that setup thus far and have had zero issues.
I have tried a few brands and seen some better than stock results but nothing quite does it right with a great cut-lines and no weird shadows or light bleeding. With all that said, more white light and greater output alone are probably good enough for most.
@@exhaustinglife In my case, these are purely for on-road performance. For the signal, marker, reverse, and stop lights, it wasn't even close. LED wins hard on those. For the headlamps, I can see room for debate. I have Baja Designs ditch lights, chase lights, and a light bar for trail work.
@@JoeMoutard you are exactly right, I was staying on the topic of the headlights. I had run the Baja Designs Squadrons, XL and S8 forward facing lights to make up what the OEM lenses could not do.
@@exhaustinglife To be fair, I'm actually using your build as a primary education source for my own. The Mallett kit that's been sitting in my garage for way too long goes in this weekend.
Most excellent presentation brother! Thank you!
