Improving the Cow Yard to Make Happy Cows!
Finally, a weekend when I could get a lot done! I came up with and implemented solutions for muddy stalls and a cramped space for our weaning steers. It was hot, dirty work, and I accidentally let the steers get out! Thank goodness Lucy was watching me nearby and that retriever turned straight into a herding dog! I'm so happy I could give attention to my cows to make them happy!

Weaning Calves, Drying Off My Milk Cow. Learning As I Go!
Переглядів 1,8 тис.Рік тому
Gracie is due to calve in 2 months! That meant that we needed to make two major changes on the farm. First, Gracie needed to start drying off so she can have a break before her new baby gets here. Of course, this ended up being a much more involved process than I anticipated. Second, the steers, Charlie and Jake, needed to start weaning. This is my first year raising cows so I'm learning as I g...
I Can't Do It All...But That's Okay!
Переглядів 1,3 тис.Рік тому
I apologize for not making any videos recently! I went back to work in May and life got a little turned upside down. Slowly but surely I'm figuring out a new schedule with a 40 hour work week, taking care of 4 kids, all the animals and the property. For now, I'm just doing my best to accept that I can't do it all...and that's okay! Plenty of things needed to fall by the wayside and a few change...
Chicken Update: Delaware Broiler vs Cornish Cross

Will Delaware Broilers replace Cornish Crosses as our homestead meat chicken breed of choice? Here's an update on them so far, compared to my experience raising cornish crosses. #homesteading #chickens
Runner Ducks Join the Homestead. Baby Ducklings Are the Cutest!!!
Переглядів 851Рік тому
After a failed attempt at raising Guineas to control pests in my garden, this year I am trying out ducks! Runner ducks to be exact, because they are more adapted for land. These babies have been a long time coming. So far we are just loving on them and watching them grow. Maybe another month in the brooder, then out to the garden they go!
Broody Hens: What I Do With Mine & How to Break Broodiness
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
We all have that one hen. A hen who is glued to her nest for weeks and pecks you anytime you try to collect eggs from the nesting boxes. Here's how I put my broody hen to work, how I've broken broodiness in the past and even how and why you might want to induce broodiness!
Figuring Out Rotational Grazing With My Cows: Happy Cows on New Pasture!
Переглядів 1,2 тис.Рік тому
After training my milk cow and beef calves to electric fences, they're finally out on pasture! I'm so happy to give them the benefit of fresh grass, as well as improving the pasture with their manure- plus, we won't have to mow as much! There's quite the learning curve though! From using the equipment to knowing how big their paddock should be and how often to move them, it will take some time ...
Beginner's Milking Routine, Calf Sharing & Training to Electric Fence! I LOVE my cows!
Переглядів 7 тис.Рік тому
Am I waiting for the other shoe to drop? Have things been too perfect? Other than going from 1.5-2 gallons per day when sharing with one calf to NO milk for over a week when we introduced our second cow, things have gone so well. Now that the second calf is two weeks old and we are separating him at night too, we are back in milk! I am a newbie, but here is my milking routine so far. I'm contin...

Enjoying What I'm NOT Good At: Gardening or Just Playing in the Dirt?
Переглядів 866Рік тому
Well, most of what I hoped to accomplish ended poorly....with lots of dead plants. BUT, it was a beautiful day and I was happy to spend it outside. With all the spring babies making an appearance, I haven't had too much time for the garden, so this was my attempt to get some things in order before the majority of spring planting takes place. #homesteading #gardening #fail
New Dual Purpose Chicks, New Chicken Tractor, New Life on Pasture for the Cornish Crosses!
Переглядів 1,7 тис.Рік тому
This was the week of the great poultry shuffle! We got another 40 broiler chicks, Delaware Broilers, which we are going to trial to see if we like their meat quality and potentially breed them. With their arrival, we needed to get the cornish cross chicks out on pasture. Come look at our new chicken tractor! #homesteading #chickens #chickentractor #chicks
Grafting A SECOND Calf To Our Milk Cow: New Baby Charlie!
Переглядів 2,6 тис.Рік тому
It was always our plan to have Gracie nurse two calves who we will raise for beef, but it took a while to get Charlie! With the dairy we bought him from mostly using sexed semen to produce heifer calves, it took two weeks to get him, but he's finally here! I was nervous to see if Gracie would accept a second calf since she's bonded with Jake so closely. I'm so pleased it went so well and love m...
Old Hen Retirement Home: My Chickens Don't Lay Many Eggs, But Now They Have a New Job!
Переглядів 1,1 тис.Рік тому
The dilemma of what to do with my older hens on the homestead has been bothering me for a while. They're not old yet, my oldest are 3 years old, but I have noticed a decline in their egg production. A problem for another day I thought, and stopped thinking about it. Then along comes my milk cow, Gracie and her calf Jake. They are excellent at producing manure, and so with that, comes lots of ch...

Cool video. I’m new to raising cattle. I am thinking of getting a few dairy cows. What requirements would I have to do to set something like this up. This is difference than selling raw milk which requires lots of money and paperwork

Yes she needs female cows but you just to take what the farmer has got because all dairy farms keep all their female calves as replacements for the herd so that's why they sell the bulr calves

I loved my orpies, I started with 3 - a blue splash, a buff and a lavender splash. They were absolutely delightful birds. I now have pekins which just make me laugh all the time. Had other breeds along the way. Some I did not like as they were mean. My pekin rooster is called The Milky Bar Kid as he's lavender but has that creamy yellow head and neck feathers. The other girls are Wipsa, Crunchie, Rolo, Aero and Fudge is my oldest going on 6 - the others are new babes.
