Building a Pallet Cattle Panel Livestock Shelter. Getting Ready for Cows!

  • We are bringing a dairy cow and two bull calves for beef onto the homestead next weekend!!! Before getting them, we had to figure out how to shelter them and provide water. With the options of repairing an old barn and well on our property, or building a new barn closer to our house/water source, we settled on the temporary solution of a pallet cattle panel shelter. We hope it will last us a couple years until we decide if we want to continue having cows and whether we should invest in the existing barn, or a new one near our house.

Great video, love the energy of the large hoop house for the cows. We made smaller ones for our ducks and chickens. And everyone is right they don't last as long as we would like.

Thank you! 🤞🏻it lasts long enough to make a more permanent decision :)

This is a great video! Can you give me an update on how the shelter is holding up or anything you would have done differently?

Thanks! It's been 10 months and actually holding up well! The tarp is fraying a bit at the bottom near the entrances. The grommets have come off the tarp on one side but it's in good enough shape to be repaired with new grommets. Instead of having a cattle panel or pallets to separate the two stalls, I'm going to put a gate in there for ease of access. Otherwise for the price and effort I think had worked out really well. We recently also got a few Shelter Logic corral shelters that we're testing out too...

Could you share details of the crossbeam you put across the 3 vertical posts?

We used brackets to join (2) 2x4x12's at the middle vertical post. We don't get too much snow here, thankfully. So far, it's held up to some pretty strong winds that took down a bunch of trees too.

So they aren't sitting on top of the center post but rather go out from the sides with the brackets? And do you do the same thing with the end posts? I really appreciate your help! We don't usually ever get snow (SC) but do get high wind, so I definitely want to take the extra step of supporting the roof!
