    I totally agree with your assessment of Glinda’s character. I didn’t realize that Glinda was the villain until after Elphaba figured out that The Wizard and Madame Morrible wanted to use her powers to spy on the citizens of Oz and to shut down the movement of the animals who still wanted to talk and teach. Glinda knew this. She knew they were lying when they started to lie about Elphaba being an enemy of Oz but she still lets them lie on her and stays with them after Elphaba declares she will fight against the Wizard. But you gave so many more examples of the shitty things Glinda did throughout the Wicked Musical.

    13:42-14:52 Speak on it! It is crazy in media how the pretty and popular character always gets a pass for bad behavior just because they fun to watch. It's okay to like a problematic character but instead of just saying "I like her/him even thought they are problematic or did something bad" people go out of their way to make them the victim while tearing down everyone else or make excuses for their actions.

    For agreeing to the hunger games, Katniss still thinks she is in the hunger games. When there are still that many people involved, you have to play allies (like she did in 75). She was playing allies with Coin because she needed to get close enough to kill her (at least that’s how I’ve always viewed it)

    The Projections of Galinda/Glinda are the Internalizations of America/Global Society. Anyone saying “she didn’t know” exemplifies how much of the population have no internal moral compass. One doesn’t need to know they’re encompassing morale if they know the difference between good and bad. It’s that simple but then again, Public School takes books like Wizard of Oz and 1984 out of curriculums for a reason so there’s that.

    I would disagree, villain implies malicious intent. Other than being mean to elphaba in the beginning of the first act (which elphaba equally mirrors, hence the entire “Loathing” number) she isn’t making choices with the intent to undermine or attack elphaba really. She becomes the mouthpiece for morrible and the wizard because she has no other choice. She just witnessed them immediately attack elphaba for speaking against them and isn’t brave enough to run away with elphaba, but she doesn’t stay with the wizard because she believes in him. They would never have let her just go about her life now knowing that the wizard is a phony, so they force her into a position where they can control her, and meanwhile she does the best she can to do good in her own way by being a beacon of positivity for the people of oz. As others have said, the point is “Galinda = Bad, Elphaba = Good” it’s that no one is wholly good or bad and that oversimplifying people to be one or the other means you miss out so much of who they are.

    Ever since the 1930 movie, everyone speculated that Glinda is the wicked one. If you watch the movie, Dorthy is the pawn..Glinda makes Dorthy do everything, while mocks the witch of the west..then at the end says “Dorthy, you always had te power to go home” and if you see that she waives her wand while Dorthy says “there’s no place like home” all the witches are dead, Dorty did everything..and Glinda becomes queen of Emerald City..everyone loves Glinda..but Glinda could have done everything..but she didn’t..even in Oz the powerful is making the guy do everything..I encourage everyone to real The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz 1900’s by L. Frank Baum..and also read Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West..Dorthy is a pawn, Glinda is definitely the evil one

    Glinda is the villain! People are insane. She is the epitome of the people who refuse to show up when it counts. It's interesting to see the passion people have over this. I was never a fan of the Wizard of Oz, any version, so I came to Wicked on Broadway from being a Kristin Chenoweth fan and loving musicals. After that, I actually watched the Wizard of Oz. Wicked makes that more interesting, at least, of course, to those of us who were on another planet as children when the original classic was played all the time on TV. I definitely want to see the movie again. It was great!!!!!

    I disagree. Glinda brought long lasting change whereas all Elphaba did was rescue a few animals. Glinda changed the system from the inside when she rose to power, she jailed Madam Morrible and the Wizard. Elphabas rebellion didn’t bring long lasting change. She also didn’t want her family to be tortured due to her actions. Yes she began as a bitch but she had improvement and character development Meanwhile, Elphaba kidnapped a child over a pair of shoes

    • @zoejnobaptiste3332
      @zoejnobaptiste3332 День тому

      Glinda only changed things after Elphaba 'died' as it was Elphaba's dying wish for her to do so. She was in a position of power for years and only changed things as a result of everything that happened towards the end. Elphaba's rebellion is the only reason she changed anything.

  • @mikhailalynn
    @mikhailalynn День тому

    I don't think you can claim Glinda's "the villain", but (like you said) I only think that based on her actions at the very end of the second act. If anything, it's another interesting (scary?) commentary on our society and power dynamics. Glinda was ultimately able to gain the power to do what Elphie was never able to do by being well liked and working her way to the very top of the corrupt system (as she alluded to throughout popular). I also think that when Elphie asked Glinda to come with her at the end of Act I, Glinda wanted to, but she knew that she didn't have the kind of strength Elphie had for the fight against the wizard at that time. After many more years of character growth (and many more selfish decisions and actions because she was not "good"), she ended up using the type of strength she'd always had to bring the system crashing down. So then, Glinda does become the "hero" in a sense where Elphie couldn't get the job done because of what she learned from Elphie. In the book, Elphaba is honestly not very competent or helpful to the cause she cares about, and she ends up just sulking over her failures for a good part of the book, while Glinda is more of a side character who doesn't have much of a character arc at all (and is pretty terrible throughout). It's all very dark, not at all like the play 😂

  • @CeruleanAether
    @CeruleanAether День тому

    I agree with a lot of your comments. I think the one scene with Glinda dancing with Elphaba at that party is probably the main culprit as to why people see Glinda as not a villain. In that moment, she actually stakes her reputation and popularity to comfort Elphaba and risk looking just as ridiculous. Given everything we know about Glinda, it’s truly antithetical to her whole character. It’s not something she needed to do because she already had what she wanted. Even if Glinda is a self-centered, she showed that she’s capable of putting that aside to do something good for others. Glinda’s character also asks us if it matters why someone does good, as long as there’s good getting done. Glinda isn’t just charismatic and self-serving. People like her because she genuinely has a positive impact on their lives. Part 2 sounds like it further explores what happens when a bad person stops doing good for bad reasons, and just does bad things instead.

    • @CeruleanAether
      @CeruleanAether День тому

      It’s also interesting that Elphaba thought that Glinda wouldn’t be able to turn people on her side. Glinda was able to change people’s perceptions about her before. If Wicked weren’t tied to the lore of WoO, it would’ve made perfect sense for that to come full circle.

It also doesn't help that Elphaba was played by a Black woman, people immediately, without fail turn their backs and blatantly side with the Glinda almost subconsciously.

    Imo There is probably 2 things happen about glinda's true color in part 2: 1. She will be really the antagonist, which will kill elfaba... As she is kinda jealous of her and really fond of recognition 2. She is actually a loyal friend of elfaba, as she finally realizes about animals life.. and work together with elfaba, one of their plan is to fool everyone that elfaba is dead as wicked.. this can be seen in the beginning of the movie.. glinda seems too hasty at celebrating elfaba's death in munchkins and wanting to leave as soon as possible

    “The writing in wicked is so good” and yet it seems to be going over your head. Your audience is attacking you because it’s a seemingly brain dead take to insist that Glinda (and Elphaba) are not nuanced characters and that Glinda’s arc doesn’t at least somewhat redeem her. Both her and Elphaba do terrible things, both make mistakes and both come to terms with their own capacity for wickedness. You keep insisting that this isn’t just your take, that it’s widely known that Glinda is the villain but that’s just… not true. Her morality has been a debate for 20 years and the actresses and creators have all inferred that they approach both as nuanced characters. Glinda is at times an antagonist and certainly more morally gray but ultimately up to interpretation given her naivety etc. I think your politics are getting in the way of a more objective interpretation here. You obviously believe in intersectionality and that it's "wicked" to be complicit or even turn a blind eye to a system of oppression. I sympathize, but I also think that's probably a far too unforgiving, Manichean view of the world that leaves little room for debate and is therefore exclusionary and ultimately counterproductive. It's not how you build coalitions or achieve consensus in your personal life, at work, or in the political sphere. Maybe good for engagement though. Is every Israeli complicit in the atrocities of their government? Is every government official even complicit? What about every citizen that falls victim to propaganda? In the end, even those with enough intellect, moral clarity and agency are just trying to survive and not destroy their lives or the lives of their friends and family just to take a moral stand. Using this framing, Elphaba's choice could actually be viewed as the more selfish act by putting others at more immediate risk of retaliation. And that's why the courage to act is not the only delineator here, especially for those living under oppressive regimes. There is often far more at stake for these people - not to mention far less urgency in the moment these decisions are made because of the hopelessness oppressive regimes engineer in order to discourage courageous acts in the first place. There is a reason far more people throughout history have chosen Glinda's path rather than Elphaba's - it's not simply because they were callous to the suffering of others, and that's after taking privilege/class/benefitting from the oppressive system out of the equation. I think you mostly grok this argument and reject it though, which is why you've gone out of your way to frame Glinda as irredeemably selfish and therefore incapable of considering the safety of her friends and family. In which case, I would assume you're probably just being stubborn and ignoring what is obvious evidence (to most of us) of a far more nuanced character so that the narrative sits much more comfortably with your own worldview.
