Way of kings is also a recent read for me! I'm glad you enjoyed it. High fantasy implies the author built a new world and rules for that world! Not that it's "better" than any other fantasy. Low fantasy is a term for urban/modern fantasy, or fantasy that takes place on our planet/in our time.
I dont think it was this year, might've finished it just before new years but the book that made me cry and certainly became one of my favorites of all time is "Nothing To See Here" by Kevin Wilson. The premise baffled me at first, it's a little absurd but what I actually got was beautiful and moving story about found family, accepting motherhood and queerness. I literally sobbed.
My favorite book of the year that also made me cry is No One Writes Back by Jang Eun-Jin. Such a good book and I would recommend to anyone. Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen was a good read too.
