I haven’t seen the ART version, but I saw the Broadway Great Gatsby… GIRL. I have so many words for everyone tearing down that show. It was phenomenal. No Tony nom for the set is an actual crime.
I was surprised by that given how extensive they were, but it may have had to do with the projections malfunctioning. The upper projections malfunctioned multiple times at the performance I attended, and it was during the time the nominators were attending. It was very distracting.
i have a few minor gripes, i think the staging felt way to empty for a lot of scenes, i think having jeremy’s show stop number 20 min into act 1 and 3 songs into act 2 wasn’t very smart and they could’ve made more of a buildup, and meeting gatsby wasn’t spectacuar or anything like in the book or the movie
@@samtasmic15 Depending on what you were talking about, the emptiness could be due to the projections malfunctioning. Some of the upper stuff was just dark. It was distracting.
Despite it being in the book I think A.R.T might be the only adaptation to actually make Nick queer? (I'm sure someone has done a small one somewhere. But generally.)
just seconding that they word-for-word get the ending of the book correct in the A.R.T. production, including the dash. they definitely do not say "we belong" haha. i think there could be a bit more breathing room after "until one fine morning--", but still, not egregious at all
The video quality is sooo good, congrats Meredith! Great Gatsby is one of my favorites (i read it around 30 times so far, crazy, i know). Awesome to hear from you, cheers! And all the love to your sister, her style is so good
as you were talking about the acting of myrtle in the regional production i was like omg who is this actress then you put in that it was solea pfeiffer and it all made sense. she is sooooo incredible in everything she does!!
Some people think the dash at the end of the second to last paragraph in the novel is supposed to visually look like a dock and that by reaching too far we fall off. Drowning is a big image. It is not even that it never ends, it is that it kills us before we can even reach it. Gatsby drowns in the pool, but there also is this vast expanse of water between him and the green light. Maureen Corrigan explains it well in the book We Read On.
i can tell you had so much fun making this video and it was SO much fun to watch and hear your thoughts! i hope you keep trying different video styles and formats and taking us on adventures with you
Hey Meredith its Jon. I got a name change so i am Angel now. Every good life adventure begins with “i was drinking with my dnd group when…”. I am so glad you able to see both shows, and that you had a good time.
So I HAVE SEEN THE BROADWAY GATSBY (not the ART Gatsby yet, but I hope to soon) and frankly I think it's terrible. I'm probably jaded because I see a ton of shows every year and I teach english, but I felt it was all style and no substance. Great costumes and sets sure, but it leaned into the romance so hard and fundamentally missed all the themes of the book. Some of the things that infuriated me the most about Broadway Gatsby were the straightwashing of the Jordan/Nick pairing (to the point that they got a cutesy lil number about getting engaged) and trying way too hard to make Daisy sympathetic by moving her line about hoping her daughter is a fool to the end of the show as an 11 o-clock number. I hope ART Gatsby engages with the mythmaking and criminal elements of Gatsby's backstory more, cause Broadway Gatsby honestly had me and my friends laughing at how heavy handed it was.
@@doityourselfa I am not saying that they are wrong just that both producers announced their different goals for their respective adaptations and personally I love both shows. Maybe they could have chosen a different text to adapt but for what they were going for and their interpretation of the text I think they did a good job (in my opinion)
I'm sure she gets this a lot, but your sister looks like Alia Shawkat. When I saw that first clip of your sister I thought you used a random clip of Alia Shawkat and you were going to say that she was in one of the plays.
Will be interesting if Art Gatsby comes to Broadway. I saw Great Gatsby and thought it was fine, but none of it wowed me. Great Gatsby is Definitely not the best show of the season.
It will be interesting to see if the ART Gatsby comes next season or even later to avoid Great Gatsby as the current Broadway Gatsby is making 1 million dollars plus in the box office every week now with 90 percent plus capacity.
It is very heavily implied in the original novel Nick is gay. The scene they have in the ART Gatsby is straight from the text.

They say "we beat on" in the ART production after the "one fine morning". They go into the next paragraph just like the book.

Thank you!! I agree, those are the best choices!!
I saw Broadway theatre Gatsby in papermill and it was extraordinary, or maybe that’s my Jeremy Jordan fangirl talking
Yeah same I was trying not to let it bias me but he was truly amazing
Solea Pfeiffer is one of my favorite actors right now! I recently saw her in Hadestown.

I agree about the straightwashing... the romance was the only part of the book I liked. It was a tragedy that they couldn't be together.
But that is why the writers said they were going for a romance and a comedy that at the end is a bit tragic, a simple thing.
@@Madison-fl4lq if you're going for cutesy romance and comedy then gatsby isn't really the text you wanna adapt. austen is right there.

A.R.T., not pronounced “art”
It's an acronym, it's not that deep.
