Book Colin - perpetual man child
Book Pen - spreads vicious gossip but book treats it as if she's an angel and everyone is okay with it. loses weight to get the guy.
Book Eloise - okay with Pen writing gossip about her family behind her back (whether good or malicious)
Book Edwina - totally okay with Anthony secretly lusting after her older sister and them wanting to bump each other in the sheets
Netflix Colin - has manners- treats Pen with care
Netflix Pen - is a complex human being who is neither wholly good or wholly bad. She writes vicious things about her best friend and her family and no- no one is okay with it. Has a somewhat vicious personality while still being relatable and interesting and sympathetic to watch. Also does not have to lose weight to get with the guy. In fact. looks like she gained some. good for her.
Netflix Eloise - is NOT okay with Pen writing gossip about her family behind her back.
Netflix Edwina - is definitely not okay with Anthony and her sister's love tension behind her back.
Netflix-realistic portrayals of human beings with a personality.
Book- some weird fantasy that would never happen in real life. ever. not even remotely.
.......................................................................so it's really not a bad thing for Netflix not to follow the books in this case. They are taking the meat of the story, but making sure these characters are not only relatable but also realistic emotions, reactions and tensions barring some embellishing of historical accuracy.

I’ll be unpopular here: I don’t care about the Mondriches. I don’t care about Cressida (although I don’t mind a little bit of a development arch). I dont even care about Francesca right now. Pollin feels like a side story to all the other plots going on, it actually feels more like Francesca’s season. I don’t think they developed pen and Collin enough for me to believe it, and the carriage scene felt forced and rushed and out of nowhere. They need more episodes of they’re going to have this many side stories

The problem is that in the books theres actually a ton of overlap- but also the books cover a TON more time. So they're trying to cram in the fact that eloise/penelope/francesca's books all take place within a year, but those are supposed to be like, 10 years after daphne's book. so its just feeling extra crammed.

  • @maritta2504
    @maritta2504 4 місяці тому +14

I liked that they are setting off Francesca's story already. Actually hers, Colin's and Eloise's need some built up time and they are also intertwined and basically take place at the same time. So I am not at all against having the focus on more than one sibling in the season. I do think they should connect the stories together a bit. At least that way they do not need to invent a ton of other characters not in the book 😄
Francesca needs some time to be happily married and then grieve before we can meet Michael. I don't think they will just drop Francesca's story. They just need to set it up first. What happened now imo is pretty much taken straight out of the book. I think it was implied Fran and John were indeed a love match, and it was a whirlwind happening in her first season.
Eloise needs some time to establish the friendship with Philipp. Also from what I understood, it was quite common for british Gentry to spent the summer (?) at their country homes and then return to London for ball season, so I didn't think them mentioning Eloise beeing at the country side was a missed opportunity at all. For me, this was just to show/say that time had passed.
I really didn't like Eloise's book though. Benedict's was alright. I loved Francesca though! I do felt the same about Colin and Penelope that you did though, both book and show.
Edit: it's thought that Benedict is next... But his story also needs building up, which they also would need to do this season at least...

My biggest issue with s2 is that I left the show still not liking Kates sister and I’m pretty sure that wasn’t the goal. I wish they would have kept her character specifically more like the book because it would make it more realistic to have the couple forgiven in the end.
For S3 I wish we would have stayed away from Pen wanting to marry cause that wasn’t a part of the book and it makes Colin’s yearn for Penelope more genuine. But to be fair we haven’t seen all of s3 so I’ll give it grace.

I agree with you that the main characters (and really only the main characters) in this season seem more like their book selves than in last season. This season seems almost fanfiction-y to me in the way that whole scenes are lifted almost verbatim from the book while the plot is practically unrecognizable. Crucially, book Colin already knew about Whistledown prior to asking Pen to marry him. Book Eloise is the last to know, and her finding out was super anti-climactic. There is a level of heightened drama that really does feel like fanfiction. With as much as things have changed in these first three (or two and a half, anyway) seasons, I have no idea where they are or even can go with every other story.

    *SPOILER*
This comment contains spoilers for future seasons.
Francesca's presence in this season is set up for her book, this is what happens prior to her story as in her story she is a widow. Her romance is with the brother of her late husband who receives the title because she was not able to "produce" an heir.
At the end of this season I also expect to set up the opening scene for Benedict's story where he will meet Sophie for the first time. It's also quite possible they combine his season with Eloise's story if they follow the book.

I am not sure how familiar you are with the producer Shonda and Shondaland shows in general - but she does tend to think very far ahead but is also conscious of current circumstances. I do think (hope) they will revisit Eloise’s book storyline that they set up in some capacity, but that dialing back what they did set up in the previous two seasons had a lot to do with the personal happenings with the actress who played Marina and specifically her IRL mental health struggles and her public criticism of the streamer and producers for not taking proper care and consideration or providing support.

I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I feel like I should write something. I soo much agree that in the second season the two main characters were unlikable, I hated them the whole season and at one point I didn't even care what was going to happen to them, the only thing I hoped was that they would stop pretending that they can't stand each other just because I didn't want them to ruin the life of poor Edwina who was clueless. And I share that feeling of loneliness, because everyone loved the second season and its main characters, but it really bothered me how they behaved and how they were literally about to ruin a little girl's life just because they both thought they knew better what was right for other people, when in fact they didn't even know what was right for themselves. I still struggle to understand how so many people could have liked this couple and what they mean when they talk about tension between the two, I just felt extreme annoyance and wanted to scream when they were on the scene.

I don’t like show Penelope and it’s so weird that people do…like it seems like people who got bullied are projecting into Penelope when she’s also a mean ass girl.
-Was jealous of Marina and almost ruined her family and got Marina kicked out on the street. Marina almost killed herself to get an abortion because of what she did. She could have gone to Eloise, Anthony, hell even Violet and told the truth but she wanted to make sure that marina was ruined to guarantee no wedding because she knew colin would want to marry marina anyway if he knew the truth. She acts like she owns Colin she’s a female incel when it comes to Colin I swear.
    - bankrupted a random modiste to save her ass. I repeat bankrupted a random woman
    -called Daphne unmarriagable
-called Kate a prickly BEAST???? Hello???
    -ELOISE
-antagonized queen charlotte and made fun of a death in her family.
Penelope fans are WEIRD and the show rewards her why couldn’t they follow the books and write Penelope like that.

      @endlesslymissrable 4 місяці тому +2

Only Book Penelope was no better, she spread vicious rummors about people (including Bridgerton) and the book treated it as girl-bossing.
I mean Eloise (unlike Netflix's version) was absolutely okay with the fact that Lady Whistledown was spreading rummors about her and her family after she found out that Pen is Whistledown.
At the end of the book when Colin announced to Bridgerton that Penelope is Lady Whistledown what did they do? They congratulated, celebrated her. As if she wasn't the one to gossip about them
Come on, yes, Penelope in the show is no better, but at least the show doesn't glorify her the way the books did. Eloise casts her away, there is drama with the Queen (and possible consequences of the game Lady Whistledown plays), we are shown how Penelope herself suffers consequences of her own work
But it's kind of the point of the show you know? Lady Whistledown is imperative part of the story and her gossip is necessity (and to be honest one of not many truly interesting parts of this show). I doubt many people would watch this show if it wasn't for Lady Whistledown and her scandals. I wouldn't for sure.
This show would be boring to no end if it was just about one couple that falls in love and gets married and has a child. Lady Whistledown would be boring if her entire purpose was to just notify people about events with no drama and no spice.
Nobody says that Penelope is the best character in the show, or even morally good character. But she's interesting, and it's enough to make people like her (just like people like Joker or Loki or any other ethnically ambiguous character - and those are literally criminals)
