    The SLZB-06 devices are a great device, not quite "entry level" but good if you want that next step up and a more robust Zigbee / Thread network. Just as a note some (not too many) unmanaged switches do have issues with the 100mbps Ethernet chip in the SLZB-06 devices, but most should work out of the box. If you have issues, the WiFi option is quite robust, or the USB option is available. I have been using an SLZB-06M that uses the SiLabs chipset in zha for quite some time and it works well, but if you do use Zigbee2MQTT, I'd still recommend the standard 06 model with the TI chipset as this is proven and highly robust and reliable in Z2M. As far as the P7 and P10 versions of the TI chipset, I wouldn't bother with the extra money buying them, The processor speed is identical and even the standard 06 only uses about 30% of the RAM with over 150 devices in the network, so you really won't run out of RAM and the firmware is not so robust with the P7 and P10 versions Note: If you use it as a Bluetooth Proxy, it will install ESPHome firmware and you will lose the web interface options.

    What if you want to use it as a zigbee router - I already have a sonoff P dongle and need it for upstairs. Do I just add it to my current zigbee network?

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 5 днів тому

      My understanding is you can only have one Zigbee coordinator in a Zigbee network, but you can have multiple Zigbee networks. For example, two Zigbee2MQTT networks, or a Zigbee2MQTT and a ZHA network. Most people would rarely need multiple Zigbee networks. You can read how to run SLZB-06 as a Zigbee router here: smlight.tech/manual/slzb-06/guide/faq-and-lifehacks/faq-and-lifehacks.html#add-some-functionality. If you flash with the router firmware, it should show up in the device list in the Zigbee2MQTT interface.

    Oh man, this looks like a great way to solve a problem I'm "having." That of rapid recovery if my Home Assistant VM dies. The issue is that the USB Zigbee controller is married to the install, so I'd have to physically move both the config and the plug itself over to whatever I chose as my failover. This could do the trick for that. Thank you!

    I'm using Reolink PoE cameras for my security. I've got 5 covering my yard, 2 for the driveway, 1 in the garage and a PoE doorbell on the front porch. I'm using 2 interior cams as well. They integrate easily in Home Assistant and are auto detected on the network when adding a new one. I'm using several automations based on motion events. One thing that I really like in Home Assistant is that I have the ability to place a semi-transparent lock icon in the bottom left corner on my doorbell camera feed. I can tap that to lock and unlock the front door if I have visitors. I think the lag is inherent with pretty much all cameras but it's not too bad. I experience 2-3 second delays. Back when I used TP-Link Wi-Fi cams, it was awful. Like you, I got sick of recharging and reinstalling regularly. At some point, I may try out the UniFi cameras. I love your sprinkler based animal deterrent automation. Fun to watch. 🤣

    How would you do an Automation based on the sleeping focus, as you can´t set "turning on sleep mode" or "turning off sleep mode" as a trigger in SC? You can only trigger on Relaxion time starts, sleeping time starts and wake up phase. The Problem here is, when you accidentally turn on sleep mode and then turn it off again the toggle turns on but never off because turning off sleep mode isn´t the same as the wake up phase. Any idea on that?

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 6 днів тому

      That is correct, but practically I never find myself in that situation (accidentally turning on sleep mode and then turning it off manually). I have a Home Assistant automation that sets my Ring Alarm to "Armed and Home" when my iPhone goes into Sleep mode and I am also home. The Home Assistant automation is triggered when an input boolean is switched on. This input boolean in Home Assistant is exposed to Apple Home via HomeKit Bridge, and is switched on using an iOS Shortcuts automation (When Bedtime starts, set the input boolean to on). Likewise, I have an iOS Shortcuts automation to switch it off (When Waking Up, set the input boolean to off). The issue you describe is a limitation if you accidentally turn on sleep mode and need to turn it off, but has not been an issue for me. But if it was, I can toggle off the input boolean in Apple Home.

    This coordinator is a GARBAGE! It does not reconnect to the host if your ip network experienced interruption. Do this: connect it to the router via ethernet. Let it zha or z2m be started. Then power off the router for 2-3 minutes - done, your zigbee network is down untill you power on/off the coordinator. The implications of that are that you never know if your zigbee network is still alive if you use this scam...

    The cool thing about these is they also have ESP32 chips which are one of the easiest I have found to configure for ESPHome. The devices themselves can also be flashed directly via USB A<>C via a PC (with the right drivers) and yaml can be uploaded easily 1st time via USB and they will boot up during the discovery when flashed without any fooling around with reset buttons or shorting jumpers on pins etc... There is also some great code in the online manual you can upload to run them as joint Zigbee or Matter devices as well as BT proxies or ESP32 devices. This can be easily set up first time via the main web interface. That is pretty cool. Though doing this memas the device control for everything appears in the ESPHome dashboard and you lose the original specific web interface..

      I'm not certain on the range. The Thread integration in Home Assistant will detect any available Thread Border Routers. Each border router (I.e., Apple TV, Amazon Echo, Google Nest) creates its own Thread network with different credentials, so devices cannot roam between them. You can select one border router as your Preferred Network in home Assistant, meaning Home Assistant has the credentials for that network and it will be used as the default network when adding Thread devices.

The only thing you have to make sure is to use the correct firmware/driver (Ember instead of EZSP with firmware version 7.4). The info about the "listed in the experimental section" isn't correct anymore.

      Enter the IP address of your SMLIGHT device in a desktop browser, and you can update the firmware as described in the video. Also, you can visit: smlight.tech/flasher/.

    I'm using the SMLight SLZB-06 via PoE with Zigbee2MQTT. The Home Assistant ZBT-1 (Skyconnect) with ZHA. I'm slowly migrating everything over from ZHA over to Z2M, so that's the reason for running both. It also eliminates any downtime. Using a Sonoff dongle Plus-E, reflashed as a Thread Border Router. ZooZ ZST39 LR for Z-Wave. And lastly, a Bond Bridge for RF (ceiling fan). I think that the SLZB-06 is the best coordinator available for Zigbee. So many options and it's been rock solid. Thanks for another great video! 👍

    I’ve noticed that your logs showed an error starting zigbee-herdsman 6:41. Which I’m currently facing. How were you able to fix that? I’m struggling to find a solution online.

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 8 днів тому

      The issue was one of two things as I recall: 1) Trying to connect before flashing the adapter to Zigbee coordinator mode, or 2) not having the port inputted correctly under Serial in the Configuration options for the Zigbee2MQTT add-on. The port should look something like port: tcp://192.168.x.xxx:6638 but using the actual IP of your adapter. Hope that helps, and thanks for watching!

    Did you consider mesh setup rather than access points?

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 10 днів тому

      Yes. The access point setup seems most reliable, so that’s the route I took, and am glad that I did.

  • @saisusheelsunkara462

    Does each access point have its own SSID?

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 10 днів тому

      It’s up to you. You can create multiple SSIDs and broadcast them across all access points, or restrict an SSID to only broadcast from certain access points.

  • @saisusheelsunkara462
    @saisusheelsunkara462 10 днів тому

    With wifi access points, doesnt your devices have to hop between access points as you move around the house? Does each of the access point have their own SSID?

    • @michaelsleen
      @michaelsleen 10 днів тому

      Most smart home devices are stationary. Really the only roaming things are phones and laptops. But they seamlessly move between access points without issue. You can create multiple SSIDs and broadcast them across all access points, or restrict an SSID to only broadcast from certain access points.

    I've used this Zigbee controller for over a year, almost no issues despite my very suboptimal setup and positioning. It's a good way to avoid interference from USB 3.0 ports, and allows you to have fallback if you're running HA in a virtual machine. Since it's not connected to one machine via USB, the Zigbee network stays up even if one of the cluster nodes running an HA instance goes down, as long as another one is up.

    Awesome! Please, I have two questions if you don’t mind: 1- Do you use the ISP Router in a bridge mode?. 2- Do you use the UDM Pro just like an UniFi Controller because you don't use its ports except the WLAN port and one SFP+ port? Thanks for this great video

    Thank you for the detail about Home Assistant. I assumed that I could add it that way. We really need a smart fingerprint/code lock that we can manage the users/codes/fingerprints from a centralized location like HASS. I fear that might not ever happen.

    Nice job Michael! 👏 One of mine sends an actionable notification if the garage door has been left open and both of us are out & traveling away from our home zone. Another sends repeated nagging reminders over the smart speakers, to open the doggy door if it's been left closed over 15 minutes, only after it's been closed over 1 hr and it's between 7am-9pm. We lock the dogs in during certain times and it really helps as everyone always thinks someone else took care of it. Also receive notifications if the dog's water and food bowls are getting low. 🐾

      I saw a guy who automated the opening and closing of the dog door, and refilling the dog water and food bowl. Looked a bit involved but pretty nice. Thanks for watching as always!
