Training Tips to Run a Faster Marathon
Wearables? Other than showing my hRates on my easy runs, being sure they are actually easy efforts and my tempo\threshold run at some specific hRate, I have no real use for all the aspects of them. But, with that said, I can see where new runners can be inspired by these new fangled devices .. -- If you need and abide by a man-made ~mechanical device to tell you how you slept, maybe you also need a fart monitor to enlighten you?
Finally a video I can listen to at normal speed!
20:00 -- One other reason sugar is hard to quit is because it is almost *every man-made product* that is sold under the label of food.
16:00 -- Mr. Maffetone uses the word *'propaganda'.* In germany in the 1930s, the term the *'big lie'* was used to push their *propaganda* to influence people as Phil describes here. *The 'big lie' of the '30s has been replaced with 'tell a million little lies' to influence people of today.* -- Welcome to the ways of the 21st century.
Nasal breathing creates nitric oxide(NO) .. NO allows our blood vessels to dilatate, effects of dilatated blood vessels should be obvious to you ... Mr Louis Ignarro won a Nobel prize with his work on NO.
Thank you Tyson for interviewing one of the legends in the triathlon! Once upon a time, I wrote about triathlons and triathletes, while working at Runner's World magazine. Now I'm working on my fourth puzzle book, Cryptograph Puzzles #4 Athletes, on Amazon. This helps for a puzzle quote. I'm doing 10 triathletes: Dave Scott, Javier Gomez, Gwen Jorgensen, Natascha Badmann, Mark Allen, Paula Newby-Fraser, Chrissie Wellington, Jan Frodeno, Alistair Brownlee, Daniela Ryf. For running I broke out the mile, marathon, 100M, ultramarathon, cross country. Names like Frank Shorter, Kelvin Kiptum, Carl Lewis, Sebastian Coe, John Walker, etc. At Runner's World I met Derek Clayton. He predicted the marathon record would go as low as two hours and he was right! Glad to hear Mark is enjoying life in Santa Cruz. One of my favorite rides was the Santa Cruz loop down the coast and home to Santa Clara Valley. Good times.
The nimbus 26 are pants the 25 however was everything I'd want in a shoe.
Thanks for the advices. I found it a bit difficult to follow how the session days should be scheduled and kept turning back, listening again and again. It would be helpful to show it in a chart, divide them into different sessions or to pause a little bit before introducing a new type of session.
The Japanese do the same thing. In fact, they jog easily a lot!
Dr Maffetone is a legend. He was so ahead of his time. I've been listening to his advice for over 15 years and i've been healthy ever since.
He’s definitely good at explaining what is going on regarding our mental and physical health due to the stress we put on our bodies from pushing ourselves too hard. That’s why he developed the MAF method.
Get a Samsung watch. Trust me.
humm
I too bought the Nimbus. Hated them too. All kinds of foot problems with them. Back with Hoka where I belong (Cliftons are so reliable).
surprised about the nimbus 26s. ive loved mine, i used mine throughout roads and trails for 450 miles. although they are now absolutely cooked from that, i switched to gel cumulus 26s in search of less cushion actually, and im missing the nibmuses. They had a great fit around my foot and felt quite comfortable for my marathon training long runs
Nimbus 26 were the same for me. Terrible hotspots; slightly improved by new insoles. Wouldn’t recommend them either.
I absolutely did not get on with the Nimbus 26’s either! I gave them several runs and just couldn’t keep them. Gave them away -that person is loving them so oh well! Great video, as always.
This training approach only works for those athletes who have tons of time to train if you compete. For time-crunched people (most of the population), need to do threshold and Vo2Max efforts 2-3 times a week.
Not true....Go low HR for 3 months, feel the difference...then go on to normal training & racing for 3 months, you will have a great improvement, repeat over ..👍👍
I am an ultra-endurance rider (have done up to 1500 km in 5 days) and I can tell you nothing can replace carbs as my fuel. I consume carbs every 45 min 1 hr and also protein. Fat does not help much in keeping my energy up
I like my foam roller but mine vibrates. Helps with recovery but I agree with the rest of your takes here. Thanks!
😊
This made me laugh, esp the tights. Though the crop top and the garmin make it sound like you haven't had a good run. Hope you get to spoil yourself with some good gear this Xmas. Love your youtube channel and podcast BTW!
Same with the garmin and sleep. I never go straight to sleep and I never get up as soon as I wake. If it tells me I got 9 hours, I know I really only got about 7!
I learnt some time ago that you should discount the rejuvenative value of rest before sleep
Thanks for the video. I think we can all get by with one quality shirt; the rest of the time can wear those tacky ones we get from races. Im also with you on tights, I usually wear shorts over them. No need to attract (or disgust) the ladies 😅
Awesome interview 🎉
Tim Noakes says 10gs of CARBS per HR is all the body needs during longer workouts ..
I tried running slow for quite a while, and it made me a slow runner. I've since start training harder again and noticed the my "Maf" heart race pace has really increased as I've introduced speed work again. Slow running doesn't allow you to feel the pain and mental toughness of a fast 5km for instance. Really hasn't worked that well for me. Great interview though. Thanks
I've been doing maf for my long runs, but it doesn't help me run any faster on my shorter runs. It seems to aid endurance
🏃♀🏃♂🏃love all the content
yogis have known this for EVER!!!
Hey man I just came across this video when looking for help with starting to run and lose weight. Thank you for this. I really will make note of everything you said. I'll start with walking and then gradually involve running. Thank you genuinely. I was thinking of renewing my gym membership so I have access to swimming for muscle days. Would that be a good edition? Thank you again!
Start watching from 3.20 only
After mths & mths of running easy in zone2 you can shift longrun ability to around 2 1/2 to 2 3/4hrs. This really helps teach the body to oxidise fatty acids well past the 1hr 45 to 2hr mark then theres no bonk at all. When i used to run in zone3 thats usually the typical bonk around the 2hr/26-28k mark for alot of 3hr marathon racers in their longruns. If a 3hr racer can have the patience to cruise 28k in 2 1/2hrs without gels... the adaptations are so worth it 😊.
It benefits every runner from 800m to ultramarathoner 😊. Which is why the Lydiard method pyramidal approach 1st 10wks of an 24wk program worked so well. After the 10wks things changed for 800m /1500/1600m vs 3k to 5km... verse 10k-50k. Doing 2 other paces per wk is recommended via a short sharp fartlek (8x12sec @800-1600m pace ) and a 40min Zone3 wkly run to keep sub threshold stimulated. A mthly 5-8km timetrial can access progression as volume builds. Nice video 😊. 60-90miles a wk seems to be the sweetspot for most runners incorporating alot of low heartrate training.
Oxidising fatty acids is the real deal. The faster someones average pace at topend zone2 say 80% of true max or 88% of lt2 with a higher fat diet really is the key to improving metabolic health. Someone may drop their fat max pace from 5:10/km to 4:35/km simply from doing high volumes of zone2 easy to moderate training. Then in the marathon its possible as proved by Timothy Noakes that only 10grams/hr is enough to minimise glycogen depletion in the marathon. Someone can go from Oxidising only 30g/hr (270cals/hr) to a whopping 100g/hr or 900cals /hr. Then gluconeogenisis + slight gel strategy is optimisation for healthier race day performances without g.i distress. Cheers great interview...its right up my alley.
Good points👍👍👍
Ha, I thought he meant count to 1,006 without taking a breath!
He would have never beaten Lasse virren.
I'm a dedicated zone 2 runner who genuinely loves running at this pace. It lets me come back the next day without feeling burned out, and I'm in it for the joy of the run rather than competition-even though I'm surrounded by friends who are. Last July, I unintentionally increased my mileage by tagging along with friends training for a duathlon. By mid-August, I developed shin splints, which now turned out to be a minor stress fracture. That sidelined me from running for over two months. Since then, I’ve shifted my focus to recovery and easing back with swimming and just walking. I've been careful about testing my shin, but after trying it out recently, I still noticed some discomfort. It’s hard to hold off on running because I miss it deeply, but I've learned to prioritize patience and recovery. It’s a lesson in taking care of my body first so I can come back stronger when the time is right.
So, you are unaware that the fastest way to get the largest amount of air into the lungs is through the mouth? .. ... Unless you have horse nostrils..... maybe you are a jackass? ... I guess one shouldn't run if they have a deviated septum.
pro athletes are so fast because of their huge amount of milage and training i'd say a good 90% the rest is genetic... that's why we recreational runners will never be that fast... thanks interesting video
Bloody hell, I can barely crack 20miles a week and I have a marathon in 5 weeks, I can only assume it's going to be rough.
Thanks for the video 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Joe talks about the EF number where Average speed/average heart rate is easily doable when riding outside but if doing structured workouts on an indoor trainer speed will not be reflective of your effort (this applies to the Rouvy App which displays speed based on the terrain of the video being used) Would it be ok to substitute Average Power for Average speed? Power does reflect the amount of work being done ....what do you/Joe think?
It is difficult if you're over 60 years doing 180-age
Thanks for another great interview Tys 👍 Interested in your thoughts on this one... I'm 53 yo and have been running for many years and my lab-tested max HR is 180bpm (ie. that of a 40yo according to the predicted max HR formula of 220bpm - age). I've tried running at my MAF HR of 127 but made no progress and in fact lost fitness, and my body also felt worse at such a low speed (ie. knees and ankles). Ironically when I just run by feel at a nice easy, conversational pace, my HR consistently seems to be around 140bpm (ie. what my MAF HR would be calculated at if I used my actual max HR, not my formula-predicted max HR). Question: Is it better to use your actual max HR (if you know it) to calculate your MAF HR rather than the formula 180bpm - age, especially if there is such a big variation as in my case? 🤔
Rudisha is cheeter we should not mention him
100%.
Yes! This will trandOrm my endurance!
ADEBE BIKILIA the best Bareffoot
Fantastic listI concur with everything you've said. As a running coach and advocate myself, I completely resonate with these.
Awesome points and feel free to quote any one you want, with the exception of Dan Andrews LOL
