My buddies Adam and Zack from CCA Florida came down to fish with me for a day. We got into some crazy tarpon action at a local pond, and also managed to put Adam on his first tarpon on fly, on his 5wt trout rod. Tie Your own Leader & Catch MORE FISH on Fly!
So in what order did you apply the colors? Tan base then army green then olive then black, or what? That boat turned out BAD ASS!
Yes sir. Start with the lightest color and work your way to the darkest. That’s how you crate the depth in the pattern. 🤙🏼
You need a shorter fly rod, floating line with a shorter head, shorter front taper, and shorter leader for "bushwhacking." Quarter above the boat and cast to the shoreline to cut them off. When there are this many fish, just keep the fly above the boat and strip smoothly and slowly.
We were definitely not prepared for this situation. Originally intended to fish the flats, but the wind and storms had other plans, so we had to seek shelter and stumbled upon all these snook. I normally fish a shorter rod regularly for most of my fishing in canals.
Can you use intermediate line for reds? Or is floating preferred?
you can, if they're feeding in deeper water. But I personally wouldn't. If I was to have a setup for it I would probably use a sink tip line. But honestly, I've caught thousands of redfish all on floating line, in every scenario possible. I'd say floating line is definitely preferred.
I don't think fish can tell the difference between rods... it's all about the bait/lure and angler's technique in fooling the fish to take a bite.
That is definitely true, but a rod can make a huge difference in being able to present the fly where it needs to be, when it needs to be there in order to fool that fish. a skilled angler can pretty much get it done with any fly rod, but having a good rod can really make it easier and more enjoyable.
When are the fender pointe hats getting restocked?
I’m probably going to drop a new batch of estrada hats next. Likely in January.
How are these edits so clean!
Yewww
very nice fish
Thank you, we were stoked.
Sign me up! This looks like a blast! Good stuff bro!
Appreciate it, I had a ton of fun on this trip!
🌴 hey guys those were some nice reds , was that water that murky , you must have made this vid before the cold snap ?
Ever since hurricane ida, the water over here is murky. Rarely does it get clean. This particular day the water was the cleanest I had seen it in a couple years.
That chase down at the end… OH MY

hahaha awesome, congratulations. 😂 Thank you for the view!
Cool running into Florida fly guides! I watch his channel as well and stole his paddle board setup lol.
Very cool! He and I have linked up a few times since then. Cool dude. I actually have a paddle board fly fishing setup video coming soon myself. haha
Hey Eric was that the sds Abel or the rove ??? And what wt. and what made you switch from nautilus to Abel. I was also wondering what part of Louisiana do you stay at?? And I love the new Abel with the peacock design ❤
Sorry I have so many questions 😅
OK so where do I start, if i saw a crocodile, alligator, a thing with big teeth I'm in the car and home, no sir not for me, in Ireland it's sheep that's all no prehistoric big tooth monster's wanting to rip my head off. BUT GOOD VIDEO LOL.
hahaha
You can't move a fly too fast for a peacock... If it chases Do Not Stop... move the fly faster, take it away from him.
That's not true for big fish. I actually fish it a lot slower for big fish and get the 5-7lbers to take the fly better with a slow, but rapid jerk. I move the fly slowly, then twitch the rod tip and it jerks the fly past them, then stops. do that a couple times and they'll actually eat it, eliminating a lot of the short strikes and misses.
You guys are gusty riding bikes with your fly rods like that. Hope your rods have the "Life Time Guarantee"🤣🤣🤣. Perfect "fun size" fish.
if you aint breaking fly rods you aint fishing hard enough.
@@Eric.Estrada LOL. LOL. LOL. FISH ON !
Thats on my bucket list Eric, I hope I get there before i kick it. Your vids are always entertaining, helpful and down to earth, don't change a thing please.
I'm glad to hear you're enjoying the videos! Keep that bucket list growing, and I hope you make it happen soon!
Man I don’t know what they are worth these days but you know getting started catching fish on a fly rod I think that is a great deal for the cost , also some one who doesn’t stick with fly fishing they haven’t lost much out of their pocket. should you break it you are not going to cry much about it lol , great video brother.👍
Thank you, that was exactly my takeaway from it. I managed to catch some fish on it, it casted well enough to put a bend in it.
Cute fish
Right?
This is so awesome bro!
Appreciate it!
What weight rod was Jose using? He seemed a little under gunned.
Some of it was definitely not fighting the fish properly, but he was using an 8wt Sage Igniter.
@ Wow, I would have guessed 6 wt. he high stocked fish a couple of times and I was expecting the rod to explode.
great fishing
Thanks 👍

🌴🤔 well looks like you guys were having fun out there , doubles , lots of hits and misses , and big un’s , hunting marsh monsters 👍🏼
Definitely a blast! Things got a bit more serious in the next video!
@ 🌴🤔 are you breaking out the 5 wt 👍🏼😄
Looks super fun. Hope the fishing holds up and you find the big bulls. It’d be rad if the fish got back in water a little quicker, too.
Most just 5-10 seconds out of the water. The longest were 20-30 seconds, feels like a long time but they swam off strong. if you see the cuts in the video, we put the fish back in the water with the net to situate the boat.
Where are you?
Louisiana
Team Basshole with the robbery!
Yewwwwww
wow, that looks like fun.
🌴 Hey Eric, new rod new reel , some big reds that’s a great deal !
Sure is!
Love this type of content. Killer day y’all had 🤙🤙
Thanks
Yes another upload! What’s your new setup? I know you got an Abel reel.
It’s an Abel reel on a lamiglas rod. Video coming soon about this setup. Should have 1 or 2 more fishing videos from the Louisiana trip, as well as rod set up video, heron 18 walkthrough video and a few others.
Temu should charge you $200, and you will be more respectful of your comments.
What? What are you trying to say?
what did you use to secure the power pole since you can only thru-bolt one of the holes?
Could I just use straight 30lb fluro leader and that’s it I just want a simple way to get out there
You can, that is what is called a "homeboy leader". But they aren't as effective. The taper allows the fly to turn over easily, avoids it landing harshly on the water surface. Some times If I am in a frenzy and there are fish everywhere and I break off I might tie one on. Or for peacock bass where it isn't important.
Dude…treat the fish with a little more respect and release it properly
Gorgeous place to fish!
There’s no place like the Glades!
There is a reason TEMU is so cheap, and you may want to look into it. Meantime, I highly recommend that you delete the app from your phone, because they absolutely WILL hack your data every chance they get. Word to the wise...
Just tied up one of these, hopefully I can get some peas on it one day! It’s a necessity since I live in Florida 😂
Nobody knows the struggle I started with a coke can and split shots ):
haha, we used yoyo's and split shots growing up.
🌴 taller poling platform form on the skiff is cool sometimes a bit more tipsy up there , but is the fishing any good 🫲🏼😳🫱🏼, just got a used platform for project nano skiff but it’s a “full sized platform” and needs to be lowered as the transom is only 47” wide on nano skiff, 🤨
😂
Nice work 👍 I live in Orlando and want give it shot down there. Is this Biscayne Bay? Keep up the great videos. I enjoy watching your channel 👍
Nice video just subscribed, what flies do you use for tarpon
Thanks. I have a video where I show how to tie my go to fly for tarpon.
What leader did you have on? I run 40 for small tarpon
I normally use 25lb Cortland Flouro. Usually works great. But this broke at the 15lb braid.
What hook and size did you use for this?
size 2 B10s Stinger by Gamakatsu.
Yea very nice. MUCH LOVE
