How to play: David Lindley's solo for These days | Live with Jackson Browne 1978
Here's a guide to play David Lindley's first solo from a live performance of 'These Days' in 1978. I wanted to go through this one, as I feel it really captures Lindley's gift for understated, throughly engaging melodic writing.

Here's a quick guide to play the intro for Guantanamo. I don't go through the chords for the song (it's basically I-IV-V) -nor the solo (it's in standard tuning) but they seemed pretty straight forward so you're on your own there! The aim here was really to try and emulate the sound of Ry's guitar - and what a sound it is! A big part of it, is the room - and I spent quite a bit of time trying t...

You can just picture Keith saying to Ry take off the low D string.
Can just picture Keith saying Ry take the low D off.
Great video! About the "feature not a bug" thing: I read somewhere that the infinite creates a regular AND a reverse copy of the freezed sound-bite, which would explain the kind of sound it spits out and why you can't simply change it via tone print or a firmware update.
Is that so? I hadn’t heard that before, but it would certainly explain that kind of layered flange!
Fantastic tone! And I can close my eyes and hear Blind Willie Johnson. Your phrasing and dexterity with the slide is amazing!
Too kind, thanks 🙏- seems like the sound of the canvas sheet blowing in the background didn’t distract you then!
@@JeremyJames_studio No I didn’t even notice it!
11/10 for setting Jeremy!!! I expected Woody Guthrie to stroll past any second 🤣
Cheers Neal - did see some old guy in the vicinity, think it was my dad though!
@@JeremyJames_studio 🤣
What version of the GE-7 is that? (Made in Malaysia or one of the older ones?) The made in Malaysia ones are supposed to be much lower noise. There's also mods for older GE-7's to remove the noise and increase headroom.
It’s a made in Taiwan version - pretty old. The mod is possible but living in hong kong makes organising /postage a little too complicated~!
Thanks! This is the video that I was searching for, the paraeq really worth the money!
That’s great - I was hoping someone found the comparison useful. Really highlights the difference. Apparently analogueman do a mod for the boss. That would be great as I actually prefer the sliders. 😅
Yeahhhhhhhhhhh watch this everyday thanks
Got some of it down really going mad over this been humming this for years
There’s something about this melody… I really gets into the bones, doesn’t it. 😆

Welcome 🙏
No overdriven tones?
Not really - just crunch. It’s as heavy as I go!
Amazing!
🙏
Hi Jeremy, thanks for your videos, especially the tele comparison. In here seems to me that there is too much gain (clipping) or in other word no enough headroom in the tracks.
Hi! Hmm wasn’t clipping during recording and there’s always limiting on the mixbus - were you getting overs on your set up? 🤔
No I was just observing the waveform on your daw.
I've used the wrong word, it is not clipping It is about headroom
@@podfigooh right - had a look just now and it look likes it’s peaking at -3db. Fine from the looks of it. More often I’m hitting 0.5 db on a 2-bus. Anyway….thanks for listening
I had the Infinite Sustainer Pedal and I sold it after a while. I wish I would have watched your video before buying it. I needed it for bass and I really wanted to get satisfied wirth the pedal but it didn't work out. For bass it's not really usable. This modulated sound is too undefined. The point, when the sustain freezes, is too late in my opinion. Maybe its ok for playing around at home alone with headphones. But in a live- or band situation its too dull. For guitar or other higher-pitched instruments it might be ok or even good. Finally I got a HX One which has three cool, very functional and absolutely useful Sustainers in it. The signal is dry and clear like in the EHX.. but if you want to, you can add amounts of modulation (from bearly noticeable, natural to crazy overmodulated). The other two "Freezers" got some rhythmical or pattern-style modes in it. That works fantastic for practicing. If you are looking for an alternative for EHX or TC Infinite AND you need other effects as well, then give the HX One a try.
Definitely agree with you in regards to the HX line. They really are quite incredible. I still regard the TC pedal as such a miss. I don’t know why they couldn’t have cleaned up the algorithm- and then given the users opportunities to modulate the sound downstream as they’ve done and always do!
1 year later, do you still use it ?
Yes sir! I still have the boss as well - but without that mod the hiss is a bit much. So yeah still on the board right after the compressor from the same company. 🍻
Hi Jeremy, I always enjoy your Ry Cooder tutorials. For me you are the best on youtube. Not only what you explain, but also as a person and teacher and the way you explain it. Without any bluster (some youtubers think they are so good that I almost throw up). I also really like your new addition with explanation about the tone and effects used. Finding the right effect and then applying it is exactly what I have the most trouble with. That part is often forgotten in youtube tutorials.
Many thanks for taking the time to share this - really made my day! I’m trying to organise a filming set up in the learning centre we have here and I’ve had some technical (ie annoying!) problems so your words gave me a timely lift. Thank you 🙏
This is good but not as smooth and fluid as Ry Cooder's
Agreed 👍 would have been a little closer with flats 😅
Awesome!
Cheers Bruce 🍻
@@JeremyJames_studio That was outstanding. Thanks again!
A beautiful rendition Cheers Gazza :)
Thanks for that 🍻
Old style Boss GE-7 with old style PCB inside when modded is near silent for a lot less money !! But can you find an old style new ones came in about 2022 😢 don’t know what they sound like. As for MIJ or elsewhere BOSS GE-7 it makes no difference. All noisy unless modded.
Thanks I didn’t know that - I wonder what the easiest way to mod them is?
@@JeremyJames_studio Analogman does a fantastic job with this mod. On their website ''upgrading the IC chips and tone capacitors. We replace the cheap stock tone capacitors with high quality film capacitors like we use in the rest of our effects. This improves the overall clarity of the pedal''
@@Worldwideguy96I’m going to look into shipping - would be so much easier to live in the states!
sounds a bit tighter with less crunch on the P 90's
Yes exactly, more focused with a bit more ‘rip’ as well 👍
I don't really care for that wheezy harmonium sound, and greatly prefer the swirling Infinite sound. Funny, because I generally eschew modulation.
👍
👏👏👏
🙏
This is brilliant Jeremy.
Cheers Neal, I actually was going to redo as I messed it up a bit - but then thought ‘respect the work’ or more accurately ‘bugger it, nobody cares about the details’ 😆
@@JeremyJames_studio 🤣🤣🤣 Most of my favourite records have the mistakes left in!!!
Freeze is too sharp, has a sitar kind of sound quality... Too harsh. Infinite creates something more like a pads sound which is more useable live. Freeze is not something I would ever use live, the way it sounds. Waaaay to harsh.
Frequency info should be about the same…check the graphs

Awesome lesson could you do one on Mick Taylors slide on midnight Rambler
Hi James, is that the Beggars banquet version? Mick only played on get yer yayas version as far as I know- but without slide. Keith played some slide on the album cut. Is that the one you mean?
@@JeremyJames_studio midnight Rambler is on let it bleed isn't it? Yea I'm not sure who played the slide on it always just thought it would have been Mick but yea. I can play the main riff and a wee bit of the solo but just always loved the slide on it

At first I was thinking “I can’t see his hand moving the volume knob” then I got a minute in! 😂 brilliant play through mate. As always.
It was a sleight of hand alright! I did try and use the volume on the guitar but gave up quick smart and moved to the pedal - a much better experience and a certain inclusion to the slide players toolkit 😆
