    I have read all 4 books in the Practical Magic saga. I agree, the 1st book (I mean 1st published, not the order of events) could have been soooo much more. Not a bad book, but SO different from the movie and other books. My least favorite. On the other side, the movie is a master piece. I have the feeling that the author saw how the public received the movie and changed her way of telling the story. Even the way she writes after that is completely different, almost like another person. The other 3 books are way better, I think you'll like them. The precuel is good. It is more historical fiction and has witchcraft. Then comes the book about the lives of the aunts, the Rules of Magic. This one is by far my favorite. It broke me. It is so heartwarming and yet so sad. Grab the tissues! Then, the last book, which would come after the movie... It felt a little rushed. It is more on the adventure side. But it was fun.

    I could say a lot, but really the most important thing I can add is you twice refer to Peter Lawford as Peter Lorre (Laurie) and understandable slip of the tongue. But now I can't unsee Peter Lorre in the role of Laurie. What a far different and unusual movie that would be.

    Laura I had that exact opinion about young Amy in the 2019 version...she just didn't look young enough and the acting came across as forced because of it. What a great job you did with this! I don't know how you keep it all straight!!! Loved it. It's difficult for me to choose between the two movies. There are elements to both which I love - but the film score in the 94 version is just so beautiful and immersive. I feel transported a little more in '94 than in 2019. Also that opening scene just gets me, and the transition with Jo on the stairs from Part 1 to Part 2. I just love movie music. I almost always predict Oscar winners based on score actually! That is so cool that you are related! Well done with this! Brava!!!

    • @WhytheBookWins
      @WhytheBookWins День тому

      Yeah she's a great actress but she seems best in the serious roles so young Amy wasn't a great fit. The '94 one is so good so I totally get people who prefer that one. And that's a cool way to predict the Oscars! Thanks for commenting and I'm glad you liked my Little Women coverage 😃

    It’s the 1994 film for me, didn’t care about the non-linear structure of the 2019 film. I felt more emotionally attached watching the girls together and their relationships in the first half and seeing it contrast in the second half when they go their separate ways. Also I love cast the most, Winona Ryder and Kirsten Dunst were perfect but also the incredibly underrated Trini Alvarado as Meg.

    I thought the alien was a series of clones. I didn’t get the meat being sent back to the home planet part. I thought she was a vampire eating souls or something. Actually looking at the Wikipedia page, it says the director used the myth of the Baobhan sith as inspiration, so the vampire imagery makes sense, as does the blood. I thought the motorcycle guy was her servant. Like he was in charge of reincarnating her body if she was a vampire or spirit (fairy) of some kind. Oddly enough, the Baobhan sith is referenced as a influence on AHS: Delicate as well.

    It is cheaper to eat as a vegetarian as opposed to a meat eater. That is why poorer families have “meatless Mondays” and the like. Especially now with groceries being a lot more expensive. I notice meat has probably gone up a 1/3 in price but veggies, nuts and legumes have gone up about a 1/10. So, really, poor people can take a stand for animal rights and climate change and also save money by making a meatless budget. I know, I have been poor. :)

    Great intro to your channel for me! Hell of story too and I agree with you. This movie should exist for what it can teach people, the book for what it should show about the formation of the FBI, but also a Mollie perspective should exist, or at least a story about this written by an Osage to really give insight to cultural and rippling impact effects to them then and in the present. I'm sure one will eventually come out and that will be a wild story as well.

    I'm curious, did Greta Gerwig think the March sisters were raised in a barn? All four, except for Beth, acted like it! I had a similar issue with the 2005 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, where the Bennet family appeared to live in a barn for some reason. They were still genteel in the book, with an army of servants. The March sisters still had a maid! This adaptation doesn't compare to the 1994 version.

It's been a while since I've seen the film (never read the book), but from hearing you go through the story again, I do like how each of the girls have such a distinctive personality that anyone could see a part of themselves in these characters, leading to representation in a lot of ways. Hi Laura! I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation! I especially enjoyed your thoughts about Amy. I never thought about her in the ways that you brought up, but very true about her wisdom and strength of character. I did feel Beth's strength of personality shone in that scene by the seashore with Jo, which I was happy to see included in the 2019 version (its not in the Winona Ryder). Actually, my favorite line in the book - the most memorable- comes from Beth - the "I'll be lonely for you, even in heaven" line. That one just gets me. I also think its interesting to note that Beth is the only sister that keeps her own name when transferred from real life to the page. I think perhaps Louisa had a hard time writing about her. (I also discovered that in real life Beth Alcott actually had the makings of a botanist and kept extensive field notes- she was kind of the scientist of the family). I think you did a terrific job on this video and I cannot wait to see your Book vs Movie Little Women Part 2!

      @WhytheBookWins my all time favorite book is A Stone for Danny Fisher by Harold Robbins which turned into King Creole with Elvis playing Danny Fisher You should try that it's wild and Elvis said it was his favorite role

    Can't watch this video because my Doctor told me my testosterone level was already low and this could get me into negative numbers. Just wanted to say your bookcase display looks AWESOME. Great job Laura. Until next time...

    I haven't read Stephen King at all, but when I want to, I'll just steal them from my mom. 😂

    Thank for you this video. I recently go out of rehab and am nearly 2 months into my recovery and have been looking for more books to read related to addiction. You should check out Brandon Novak’s memoir “Dreamseller”. Absolutely great memoir based on his experience getting help and life in recovery after losing stardom and fame due to drugs
