Okay the story and actors... I preferred the casing of "The Talented Mr. Ripley" with Jude Law and Matt Damon. But the shots of the rented rooms and Italy in general within "Ripley" were amazing. I just got lost in the scenery. I didn't care that much about any of the characters. They were wooden and unlikable as a whole. All of them. But I watched to the end. I will watch "Purple Noon" now. Thanks for the recommendation.

As far as Ralph beating up Scut Farkas-- when his mother pulls him off Farkas, he's more worried that his mother will punish him for all the cussing he was doing as he was pouring it on Farkas, because, as we remember, she was not too thrilled the previous time he cussed.

I watched the show not knowing anything about the story. But ive heard of the book. Honestly, ive not seen anything made so beautifully. But i think 8 episodes are too short. Having said that, this series made me want to read the book mainly because i find some characters are underdeveloped in the series.

@@WhytheBookWinsI have never read the book before. I know it's from Garcia Marquez Nobel prize winner and it's a favorite among many people. I thought the series was magical and the at same time some parts were bizarre. I learned the beauty about the bizarre which is I guess its the magical realism everyone talks about. I felt like seeing encanto, avatar and an 1800 century western movie ..I don't know how to explain it's a mixed of feelings. We just wanted to see more and more. Now I want to read the book.

I loved the book, and movie for this one. I will say the only change I hated was Duddits being turned into an alien for the movie. In the book they did mention the aliens might have vame because of duddits having the same mind reading abilities, but never once said he was an alien. Basically he was a kid with the same ability as Danny. He had the shining, but in the movie they ruined that. It's still a great movie in my opinion, but why would you turn a human character into an alien. Also it wasn't being around the aliens that caused the telepathy in the book they mentioned it was the byruss, or what the soldiers called the Ripley. Thats why during the chase when it died off, and they lost the byruss they started having more trouble sensing him.

Always wondered if it was a good adaption or if it’s a snake eating its tail kinda situation; is the novel as philosophical as the film surely the symbolism in the film is trying to illustrate it but does the source hold the same tone? Or is it a visual addendum to the text? Either way it is a perfect film.

  • @josephwatkins9350

Very disappointed with the movie personally. I hate how they didn't mention the wheel of fortune, or any of his mother's transition during the coma, or his skating accident, or Cathie's stake house accident, or how they switch the Cathy stake house accident to the kids he's tutoring having a skating accident. It felt like they just rushed it so much that there didn't even feel like a connection was really there between Johnny, and Sarah in the movie, or how they 4 1/2 years is just 5 years, the wedding ring, or the one that upset me the most how the father of the child, and Johny get into an argument. I don't mind the changes themselves (except for the change with that fathers kid, absolutely hate everything about that change), but how the changes made the movie just feel rushed.

I think the dad won the leg lamp (aka the major award) in a contest he entered when he had to answer, "What was the name of the lone ranger's nephew's horse?" The mom answered, "Victor", so I guess in all fairness, SHE won the leg lamp. ...and my favorite line from the movie was when the dad was "weaving a tapestry of obscenities..." in the furnace room, one of the "swear words" he said was "Monday Noodle!" OMG I laughed so hard I cried! I still think it's one of the funniest lines in the movie!

To me the movie suffers from toomuchitius. if they just kept the Red Ryder nails the Cleveland Street Kid and maybe one other story (the bumps hounds would be my choice) it would be so much better. Reading the books or hearing Jean Shepherd read the story is the best way to hear them

Another film adaptation based on some of the same stories from In God We Trust... was the made for public television Phantom of the Open Hearth that came out in 1976 and had the leg lamp bit in it but mostly stories about the steel mill in the town set during the early 1960s concerning a teenager trying to score the perfect prom date and events of his dads siblings such as his uncle getting drunk and unloading a full house kit from a train in the freight yard with some of his friends who were also drunk. Really kinda of funny and slightly touching.

Jean Shepherd is the one who actually wrote the screenplay for the first movie. HE is the one who adapted his various stories to the screen and didn’t intend for them to be exactly translated. He seems to have used them as inspiration. The movie is not a direct adaptation of one book but is inspired by many of his stories, including those in the books you mentioned. I read both and listened to his radio broadcasts. Yes, I highly recommend reading the books but the movies were never intended to be purely faithful translations of the books.

The Woke apology for a 60ish year old book was hardly necessary; likewise the recommendation to avoid the book and see the movie instead. This is a phenomenal piece of writing that everyone should experience and the fact that you condemn it for not fitting in with the bland pablum that's marketed today is inexcusable.

Have to disagree. I read the book in the summer of ‘67 or ‘68 as a teenager. The movie is very well done, well cast, and well acted, but there’s so much more in the book that didn’t relate to Christmas that didn’t make it to the big screen. I haven’t read it since, but almost 50 years later I still remember other chapters and characters like “Harry Geertz and the 47 Crappies” and “Ludlow Kissel and the Dago Bomb that Failed”. My dad and uncle listened to Sheppard on WWOR radio in NY nightly. In the ‘70s he had a weekly show on a local NJ Public Broadcasting station called “Sheppard’s Pie”. Cheers!
