The mistake I made was starting a faceless BookTube channel. I think people like to see the person that is recommending books. I’ve deleted those videos now I’m comfortable showing my face.
I have a small checklist that reminds me to check a bunch of stuff. 1. Sound 2. Lighting 3. Camera Settings.... Just having a list reminds me to check everything else before hitting record. Don't want a piece of spinach sticking out my tooth. Stuff like that.
Thank you for your work, what an amazing channel that deserves so much more attention. I often watch your videos as part of my research for my own movie reviews. I link to or embed your movie vs. book comparisons on my (German) podcast website as part of the show notes of my reviews there to help raise awareness of your channel as often as I can. You deserve an even bigger audience than you already have, measured by how much value you provide and how much effort you put into all your fantastic analysis of books and films alike.
Thanks for that! I wrestle with doing YT vids. I am an artist and avid gardener. Not sure if it is worth the effort, yet I want to share my knowledge and love of what I do, but have reservations, several of which you have touched on here. SIGH
Yeah it can be a lot of work, but also very rewarding! I think it's worth it to film a video or two, even if you don't upload them, just to see if it's something you enjoy and go from there.
RE: not saving videos - You can actually down load a previously uploaded/published video to create a backup: Go to the channel content page in Studio and hover your mouse pointer over the video, and a menu icon list will appear. Click on the 'options' menu (three vertical dots), and a drop down menu will appear - and select the 'Download' option to download your video to your computer or storage device.
Thanks for sharing this! We make lots of youtuber mistakes since we tend to think of ourselves as a podcast first and UA-cam channel second. Like just uploading audio for the majority of our run 😅 We also release videos across all sorts of topics and genres, episodes that are too long for YT, and we don't censor our f-words. These are all "mistakes" that hold us back some, but I don't know that we'll be changing any time soon. Oh and I feel you so much on the thumbnail thing, I obsessed so much early on and looking back now they were mostly garbage. (Not that I'm particularly good now, just improving over time, like you said.) Anyway, excellent video as usual!
@InktoFilm yeah I'm in the same boat with covering a variety of genres. I know if I focused more on one specific type of genre it would help me have more consistent views. But I don't want to limit myself like that so I just cover a variety anyway. And long form content is getting more and more popular! I've seen mainstream channels release videos that push two hours so that could work to your advantage.
Thank you. I'm actually planning to start a youtube channel focusing on my writing journey and I'm feeling pretty nervous about it. I really appreciate that you aren't a channel that focuses on making videos about growing on youtube. I want to make money, supplement my income and such, but there's always such a focus on it and doing things just right to get the optimal results. Again, I do want to make money, but I also just want to create videos and talk about writing and the writing books I'm reading. Maybe even have fun doing so. So, I appreciate you talking about your experience, I feel like I trust you a lot lol
Thanks! Yeah i think just diving in can be best. Just start filming on your phone, that way the only thing you need is a phone stand. And as time goes on you can add the microphone and lighting if you realize it really is something you like doing. (Sound quality is more important than video quality, so buying a cheap microphone to attach to your phone isn't a bad idea at the start).
@@WhytheBookWins The thought of filming myself gives me such anxiety so I'm planning to not show my face, at most show my hands occasionally. I feel like I'm creating more work for myself, but I've decided to just go for it anyway lol.
I've just recently become a fan. I do have to totally agree with your point about being more confident. I've watched a selection over the past few weeks and it is much more enjoyable to watch when you are confident - it's more fun and relaxed. I've really been enjoying your videos! I enjoy your views and insights about the books and movies. thanks :)
Hi Laura! Thank you for this awesome video! It is exactly what I needed. My channel struggles because I think I fell into an area of UA-cam that I don't actually belong in. I wish I had been more mindful of that. It inhibits the type of books that I feel I can show, or the discussions. For example, usually my videos do well (for my wishes), but then I mention a book like "Godfather Death" or that my husband is a fan of Mike Mignola's "Hellboy" and the video tanks. So I have to be careful of what I say and which books I show. But I don't want to feel so inhibited. Have you had this problem? I think there is a lot I need to learn about directing my channel to the correct audience. I am trying to figure out how to get it in front of a crowd that enjoys illustrations as well as pop culture! Have a lovely day and again thank you so much for this discussion!
Yeah that can be tough, I think that's why my video on the wild robot did poorly-because kids book aren't usually my thing and my audience had no interest lol. I do think that the more specific a channel is, the better it can do but like you're saying, then the hard part is the creator feeling like they are stuck in one topic. Maybe if you start a separate channel for things that focuses on more "grown up" books that way you could reach the right audience.
@@WhytheBookWins I am one of those who flocks to your kids book vs. movie reviews! I loved your Wild Robot! It came out when I was deep in editing so I didn't leave a comment but I will fix that!
Really insightful video I love your channel and appreciate all the work you put in to replying to comments and uploading consistently. So happy to see your channel growing 🥳
I absolutely adore your channel so much! On your point about talking about the things you're passionate on, I agree that's such an important piece. I've had some channels that I've watched for years become so disappointing because they are no longer talking about what they like and almost seem resentful over it. I hope you continue to pursue the stories you enjoy because I've read so many books you've recommended this year!
I do comment on videos and there are sometimes who want to debate me. I can understand that sometimes it can be civil I don’t mind that but some of them can be really mean or to set on their opinions. That I’ve learned to walk away cause I don’t want to have an arguement with strangers. There is one time on a video where I commented on a thing that happened at a book fair and someone didn’t agree with how I handled it and other people chimed in. Most agreed with me but the debate was tedious.I politely after some time apologized saying I didn’t mean for my comment to start a debate and a few other things locally the discussion ended. Walking away helps. I have made mistakes on that though
Sometimes I reply to rude comments with a subtle, backhanded compliment, usually humorous. As for you and the other channels I watch, I give the comment thumbs down, or even report it if it's especially egregious (had to look that up because I always misspell it) . . .
Yeah I get a kick out of youtubers replying with something funny. I'm not witty enough to come up with funny comebacks though so I go the ignore route lol. And good lookin out with the thumbs down and reporting!
@@rowenatulley852I previously made a few videos under a different account that no longer exists. I look and sound horrible, seriously I would scare people. Im extremely relieved that they don't exist anymore.

I totally agree! There are faceless channels that do well but I think generally people like that personal touch of seeing the face.

Imagine the engagement in the comments if you did the whole video with spinach in your teeth though… 😂 🌱
