In the book Danceny actually leaves Paris society as well in favor of joining a Catholic group after being disillusioned by the manipulation he experienced. My Mistake! Somehow I didn't catch that part of the story when I read the book. So he and Cecile actually have very similar endings. *Also, I have been surprised how many people have commented about the '89 movie Valmont! I have decided to watch that and in my upcoming video for the show, I will also include my thoughts on that movie* 😃
I wish that the Valmont production had got the rights to the story and the guy who wrote the stage play as although JM is a great actor his Valmont does come across as slimey whereas Firth is great at ambiguity playing characters who seem nice but aren't and is most famous from playing someone who is the opposite. Annette Benning I think is a really good Madame M too. Also it's a young Firth you'd be more tempted wouldn't you?
I never thought Valmont or Sebastian changed in the films. I actually got angry that Kathryn/Merteuil was completely blamed when Sebastian/Valmont was just as guilty! I felt the letters/diary were only to ruin her as personal revenge. Neither were good people, and neither of them deserved a good ending, but having the man be redeemed in the eyes of society and the woman be completely ruined shows how messed up society is. Again, Kathryn/Merteuil is a bad person, but she's a bad person because of the world she lives in. Sebastian/Valmont is just a bad person. I actually cheered when he died.
I always though that they highlight Sebastian’s face at the end of cruel intentions because he has a smirk, showing he can still effect Kathryn’s life from the afterlife
The ending of "Valmont" is actually much closer to "Cruel Intentions". The Malkovitch "Dangerous Liaisons" is based on the stage adaptation of the novel but the stage version has an even darker, crueller ending!
@@WhytheBookWins Having persuaded Valmont to break up with Madame Tourvel, Marquise Merteuil tells him to now go win her back but we learn that she committed suicide after he broke her heart. This is what leads him to getting into the duel where he dies. The final scene was the Marquise playing cards with her friends but clearly lonely and unhappy. It's been nearly 20 years since I saw it but the dialogue is something like her friend saying "This game is so pointless" to which she replies "Yes, but we keep playing."
I always appreciated how CRUEL INTENTIONS was analogous to the trend in film at the time being almost simultaneous w/reinterpretations or homages towards classic literature like; “10 things I hate about you and the taming of the shrew” it is a admirable trend in a sense because good stories have this cycle of being reinterpreted for different generations and dangerous liaisons just shows its generational. As someone who is French and read the novel in the original french... I actually hate Cruel Intentions as an adaptation for the added incest and for setting it amongst high schoolers. I'm all for redemption if earned, but I vaguely remember feeling kind of bad for her.
Yeah it was so horrible! And then her getting pregnant and all of that was crazy too. But yeah, I was happy Annette and Cecile have good endings in Cruel Intentions. Thanks for commenting!
I'm miffed that Alan Rickman was passed over for the film adaptation, considering he was nominated for a Tony award that year for the play. Merteuil is a person of envy, despite being a flagrantly terrible person, because she is the one with the power. She has money, social capitol, and does what she wants, when she wants.
I recently watched Dangerous Liasons, for the first time as an adult. Glenn Close was fantastic. Now...Valmont was horrible, what he does to Cecile was straight up consensual and the way Marquis manipulates her into continuing it---horrible. I didn't believe he changed, Cruel Intentions makes it more believable- but if you watch the deleted scenes, he really does hit Kathryn...so she didn't make that up (I think had they left that in the film it would've been a bit too controversial, similar to that was a scene with the two gay boys and Sebastian humiliates one of them into almost performing an act of s*xual service--I remember seeing that scene on youtube years back! The ‘88 film is a great adaptation with 3 excellent lead performances & a good supporting cast (young Uma Thurman & Keanu Reeves which is nuts and the great Swoozie Kurtz) which had an interesting near-casting choice since Alan Rickmam was asked by Stephen Fears to reprise his role as Valmont from the stage, but he turned it down due to a little action classic called “Die Hard”; however John Malkovich & his Steppenwolf past works well for him as Valmont and he has a unique chemistry with both Glenn Close and Michelle Pfeiffer

I always asked why Valmont always dies I was a teenager so I think more prone to his redemption arc then I would be now and she says it’s cause of the double standard and the immoral do need to be punished that was the goal of the author. I do think Katherine has the best ending in the 90s she is rich enough to move and it’s before the age of social media so people would forget. Annette gets a better ending but adultery/cheating is not the biggest sin although some people like it is good review. I also remember doing a fun dramatic reading of merteuil letter in the book where she tells Valmont that he’s not getting in the bet such a fun evil character to play. I actually thought the reason I liked Sebastian/Valmont was because of Ryan Philippe lol. I do think Selma Blair does actually act young like a freshmen teenager which is rare for high schoolers so it’s why I liked her as Cecille

Cruel Intentions is a guilty pleasure film of mine but the characters had to be soooo over the top to make anything make sense. Sebastian was manipulative to the end and Annette was enjoying the power trip over Kathryn so much it makes you doubt that she was ever really heavy on her morals and rather was just enjoying the attention of being untouchable.

I love your videos! You're my go-to UA-camr nowadays. A couple of years ago, there was a TV series based on Dangerous Liaisons. It's kind of a backstory for the main characters, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it. Also, the actress Alice Englert, who starred in it (Fun fact-she's the daughter of Jane Campion!), was in another adaptation: Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell. It’s a really good book and show, and I thought you might be interested in checking it out.
Thank you so much!! I hadn't heard of either of those, and I had no idea Campion had a daughter who acted! You've definitely got me curious, I'll have to check them out 😊
I felt bad for Catherine in Cruel Intentions too! I think the women in these stories get punished too much for their mistakes, but I guess that's to be expected from media produced by men. 😒 John Malkovich looks like a villain, so I can't really see why women would fall for him. Hahaha!
I have not read the book, but I became obsessed with Dangerous Liaisons after the movie came out, and John Malcovich's performance specifically. He's not conventionally handsome, so using his cunning and intellect seems perfect for Valmont. I have always been mystified for the ladies who swoon for Colin Firth, so take that into consideration when I say that Valmont has almost nothing to recommend it. I even tracked down Dangerous Liaison's 1960 and though like Cruel Intentions it was updated for it's time, it just doesn't have the wicked fun of CI. I liked so much of Cruel Intentions, but it is definitely just trashy fun compared to the Oscar Bait of DL. Looking forward to the new series-hopefully it can keep the better parts of CI and correct some of it's missteps.
@@WhytheBookWins Please do if you can. While I understand the selection, the review felt incomplete without the 1989 version. Thanks for having mentioned it briefly though, as it's existance doesn't seem to be well known.
I thougI think Malkovich was great in that part. I dont agree with him not fiting the period. I prefer this version to Valmont though i like both.Cruel Intentions however, I didnt like the casting at all with the exeption of Witherspoon and Philippe. I couldnt stand Bair and Buffy. Hated the riding scene. Really the only good memory I have of that film is Philippes butt. THAT was cute.
Every time I think of the movie Dangerous Liasons I think of the movie Weekend At Bernie's. If you're a fan of Friends, you'll probably understand this. 😏
@WhytheBookWins Well, it’s from an episode where they were competing about who knew each other best. (Slight spoilers for "The One With the Embryos"). Anyway, the question was "Rachel CLAIMS her favorite movie is this . . .", to which Chandler responds, "Dangerous Liasons". Next question: "Rachel's ACTUAL favorite movie is . . ." To which Joey, with a point and a laugh, "Weekend At Bernie's"! 😄
I think that Sebastian is a very good person. I think his sister stepsister put it in his mind to do those. She is a terrible person and she should be in prison caused his death she deserves life in prison, but I know she won’t get it. She’s absolutely disgusting and a horrible human being and how she I hate her. Poor Sebastian RIP.
@ well I disagree but I respect your opinion I love Sebastian I do think Sebastian deserves representation arc I feel bad for Sebastian I wish they made a book about the diary
Sebastian is a shitty person lol. He was like this before Kathryn, they just fed off each other. I do like his redemption in cruel intentions. But Sebastian wasn’t a good person to begin with he just had a good redemption

Thank you so much!! I hadn't heard of either of those, and I had no idea Campion had a daughter who acted! You've definitely got me curious, I'll have to check them out 😊
@@WhytheBookWins She also directed her first movie last year, following in her mother’s footsteps, I guess.
I'm still mad we had to read it for school as teenagers (I'm French).
This would have been a cool one to read in school!
I felt bad for Catherine in Cruel Intentions too! I think the women in these stories get punished too much for their mistakes, but I guess that's to be expected from media produced by men. 😒
John Malkovich looks like a villain, so I can't really see why women would fall for him. Hahaha!
Yeah agreed 😒 And true, he doesn't have the look of someone that would have women swooning haha.
Did you see that netflix released a Dangerous Liaisons film in French, still a high school setting!
Oh I didn't know about that! So many adaptations of this have been made 😮
@@jeanbasile3067 I haven’t seen that but Amanda the Jedi did a review it’s not as good although it’s only one where Sebastian/valmont doesn’t die lol
Yeah Malkovich gave a great performance! I just watched Valmont and he and Merteuil were so different in that version! Not nearly as cunning.
I liked Valmont more than dangerous liesons it was just more fun and cruke intentions is my favorite
I'll need to watch this one soon! If I have time to watch it by next week I'll share my brief thoughts on it in the video i do for the new show 😀
@@WhytheBookWins Please do if you can.
Yeah after watching Valmont,l I too think Malkovich was much better in that role!
Every time I think of the movie Dangerous Liasons I think of the movie Weekend At Bernie's. If you're a fan of Friends, you'll probably understand this. 😏
I've seen Weekend at Bernie's as well as Friends but I don't get this 😆
@WhytheBookWins Well, it’s from an episode where they were competing about who knew each other best.
I'm pretty sure he had been like that even before he and Kathryn met? But yeah, they were definitely a bad influence on each other.
