My video on season one of the AMC show will be up this Wednesday! I am currently halfway through season two and hope to get that video up sometime in the next two weeks 😊
So, I am a massive Anne Rice fan. I'm going to pedantically quibble about one point. Yes, being bitten by a vampire *can* be erotic and filled with ecstasy, *but* that is entirely up to the vampire biting you, and they can definitely make it painful if they want to. Feeding also has a psychic element to it. A vampire can read the minds of the mortals they are drinking from far easier than just reading their mind without feeding on them, and vampires can exchange visions with each other when they feed from each other. Vampires can also send visions to a moral they are feeding upon, along with sensations, and states of mind. So, if they want a mortal to just be unconscious and not know what is happening they can do that. Or they could make it a very erotic experience. Or it could be emotionally intimate. Or it could be horrifying.
I’m currently reading the Vampire Chronicles I’ve read the first five so far, Anne Rice’s writing style throughout is the similar she puts philosophical conversations and descriptions above plot. They’re fascinating but you do have to challenge yourself to get through them as they’re slow paced.
The ending of the movie is so iconic! I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan, but he was outstanding in this role. I even forgot that Antonio Banderas was in it...that's how forgettable his character was. Louis really was winey and got on my nerves by the end. OT but you look stunning and on theme in this outfit.
Yeah I think a lot of people agree with Lestat's sentiment at the end, and the way he delivers those lines!😂 So amazing. I'm also not a big Cruise fan so I was very pleasantly surprised! And thank you! I try to wear something on theme when I can ☺
This movie will never get old! It's one of my top 5 of all time🖤great review. I agree they should have kept Lestat showing up, but in the movie, it worked him showing up in the end if you haven't read the book. Love that ending so much, haha! He was so awesome as Lestat!
This is one of the few "old" movies my husband will watch. I, personally, consider movies made before the 70s as "old" (well, I prefer the term "classic" , as there are innumerable gems since the birth of cinema long before the 1970s), and I don't think of IWtV as "old" to begin with. I'm just saying, it's stood the test of time for him, too. xD
I agree. By far this is Tom Cruise's best performance. As you said, Brad Pitt is the weak link, but how can Louis - as a character - stand out against Lestat and Claudia? In the book, Louis is the weak link, as well. It only makes sense that the supporting characters in the book shine more than Louis, since he is the one 'narrating', and the fact he hates himself makes it natural he would paint a broader picture of those he knew/knows. So you can't really blame Brad Pitt, you can only heap praise upon Cruise and Dunst.
@@WhytheBookWins It was just how I read it in the book. I am glad I can give another perspective, since you give such good ones to consider in every video.
Welcome to our Savage Garden! One thing ive been recommending to people is that if you want to dig deeper into anything and everything dealing with Rice to checkout the podcast community The Articulate Coven. There is so much i can say about this novel and Rice herself (been a hyperficated fan from 2008 to now), but this is a good first step into understanding all of this One recommendation: The Feast of All Saints book vs. miniseries. Arguably one of the better adaptations. Its about the life of a mixed man in precivil New Orleans. The story is mostly about the mixed offspring of white plantation owners with black mothers who are stuck in two worlds: on the surface having the same rights and privileges of their white fathers but with it being empty and fake due to their black mothers. Featuring Pam Greer, James Earle Jones, this story is Anne's love letter to New Orleans and highly overlooked.
I agree with the change of not having a lestat in Paris with the theater and everything because gave it more depth for the vampires to figure out themselves what happened to lestat.
I saw an interview clip of Ann Rice recently, an old interview obviously, where she talks about how she related to Louis as a character more than any other character. Interesting insight into the woman for sure ;)
That makes sense considering it seems she was often struggling with her faith and what she believed, plus i also read she struggled with addiction and I think in some ways the vampire aspect could be seen as symbolic of that.
Recently, I started re-reading this novel. The last time I read it was over a year before the film’s release due to at that time it was reported they wanted Daniel Day-Lewis as Lestat. At the time, I was a huge fan of his due to The Last of the Mohicans and was disappointed by the news he turned it down. Then it was reported after The Firm (1993) was a hit film that Tom Cruise was cast as Lestat then the controversy really piqued my interest in reading the novel. After that I read all of them up to Tale of the Body Thief. Having said that, I’m re-reading the novel and years later see all the flaws. I pop in the film and yeah, the film improves the material in the book and feels like a great second draft. Love the film and Cruise knocked it lit of the park. The role of Louis is a rough role for anyone who would’ve played him - Pitt’s look influenced mine at the time.
Yeah DDL being the original Lestat seems like such an interesting choice, but he's amazing so I'm sure he spoils have been great. But yeah, Cruise is superb so it all worked out in the end as far as Lestat goes!
Agree! Also, love that you played that clip - it encapsulates his performance And the magic of what he brought to the role. At that point - Cruise never showed that manner of acting in his past roles.
The issue I have always had with Rice's work is that she needed an editor, but would never allow her books to be edited. I believe that every writer benefits from a good editor.
Would you want to do The Shining and Doctor Sleep? Of course, King's infamous disdain for Kubrick's film has been covered plenty. But then Mike Flannigan managing to pay homage to both versions in his sequel is so fascinating.
I've covered both already! The Shining was an early video but hopefully it still holds up 😆 I love both The Shining and Doctor Sleep books and movies though. If you search on UA-cam 'why the book wins' along with the title, the videos will show up 😊

Oh I hadn't realized that! I'll keep that on mind going forward. I already have a poll scheduled for today though, so check back in about 3 hours so you can vote!
I watched the movie the first time when i was a child still love the movie i read the book early this year i absolutely enjoyed it im glad that neil removed the scene with lestat in paris originally river Phoenix was supposed to play the role of Daniel but sadly he passed away brad Pitt didn't enjoy playing Louis he tried to quit the film but it didn't work tom cruise did a good job Kirsten dunst was fantastic as claudia she was 12 im glad they aged her character up for me movie wins i get why the movie had to be careful about showing lestat and Louis relationship due to it being the 90,s
The nearest thing to an explanation in the book is Louis' and Claudia's theory about premature burial and the shock and despair that would bring to a newborn vampire.
Watching this after reading most of the books (Haven't read the Prince Lestat books) is a unique experience because as close to the book this is, there's enough changes as well as winks to really make a fan smile. For example, when Lestat tortures the prostitutes, you find out in The Vampire Lestat that they were actually killers and thieves who would steal from their marks. We do get a hint at this in the film but with the aristocrat. Another example is how Lestat survives not only the dead blood but the fire has to do with Akasha. The Eastern Europe part of the book was better adapted in the TV show. The tragedy of Madeline and Claudia is Madeline being unable to save Claudia is in a way Anne's feelings of not being able to save her child. I'm not a fan of the dynamic in the TV show because it does take away from the original intent but since you haven't watched it yet I won't say. It's not terrible & the performances are great but the intent isn't there anymore. But I did like how Madeline's backstory was expanded in the show. The film did film a scene with Lestat for the execution. But because some vampires can read minds I'm assuming they figured the audience could just say Louie or Claudia thought about what they did. I'm not sure if you've read any of the other books, but oh boy is there more to what Armand did with Madeline & Claudia then what is shown in either the book or film. You'll need to read The Vampire Armand for that. Not to mention The Vampire Lestat explains Lestat's mindset during the death of Claudia. Daniel is the name of the Interviewer and he does continue later on. If you decide to do Queen of the Damned you need to read both The Vampire Lestat & Queen of the Damned as they combined both. The Dirty leather jacket Lestat is wearing at the end of the film is a hint at the next book. The sex thing is completely changed in the show & I hate that, completely takes it away just so we can have physical gay stuff as opposed to the emotional connection we get since vampires aren't gay. Lestat's backstory is interesting, I definitely would read the first 4 books especially. Anne Rice did write the screenplay for the film with the director adding some touches too. Now the Queen of the Damned film, OMG a disaster just so WB could keep the license and they ended up doing nothing. Babette felt to me to be Louie's attempt to hold on to his humanity. Much like Lestat with his father. With the show you'll have to do two videos or wait to watch Season 2 and do one video. For all that show changes, they do stick closely in other areas. And as someone who's read most of the books it does give us stuff from later books (like Raglan James).
Thanks for commenting! I am currently halfway through season 2, so my season 1 video will be out this week but my next video for season 2 will take another week or two. I have only read the first book as of right now, but I definitely want to read more! I will be covering Queen of the Damned next year and am curious to see the movie because it's one I'm hoping is so bad it's good?
@@WhytheBookWins Can't wait for the next video then. For me personally the Queen of the Damned film is a decent vampire film, Aaliyah's seductive as Alasha & it has a great soundtrack (if you like early 2000's Nu Metal) but it was a terrible adaptation. I can already tell from the teaser for S3 of Interview with the Vampire they'll likely do a much better job at adapting it. If you read graphic novels, Anne Rice did approve a graphic novel called Claudia's Diary that was used a bit in the show too. There's also a short storyline Playboy magazine that takes place during the events of IWTV that's in the show. After you've read the books, Maven of the Eventide is a great reviewer of these books. Can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Vampire Lestat & Queen of the Damned as those are great books.
i've always thought that Tom Cruise nailed the personality of Lestat, but did not nail the looks. Brad Pitt fit more with the looks of Lestat, and was not good as Louis. If you could combine Brad's looks with Tom's personality, it would have been a perfect Lestat. I think Christian Slater would have made a perfect Louis.
The part I miss the most in the movie is the relacionship of Louis and Armand in the end, after the fire. It's about getting old and empty and disconnected with everything. It's hard and bitter.
I was hoping this would also be a comparison of the new TV miniseries. I'm looking forward to seeing Season 2, and even Season 3, "The Vampire Lestat" adaption, I never read that one and thought the idea of Lestat the Rock Star seemed pretty interesting. I hope the TV series does the entire 'Vampire Chronicles'.
@@TearyEyesAndersonReacts my video about the show will be out Wednesday! There was a lot to get into with the book and movie, so it seemed best to have the show be a whole other video. I'm excited for season 3 as well and will definitely be covering that when it is released!
@@WhytheBookWins Innovation Comics, did a similar thing in adopting the novel into comic books. about 3 years before the movie was released. Each comic had a painted cover and "Interview", and "Lestat" had 12 issues each, while I think they started "Queen" but the company went bankrupt before the series could be completed. But they were really good quality from the behind-the-scenes images I saw, and interviews I read. They also did the "Witches" and "Mummy" adoptions of Anne Rice, and had two companion books. I liked "The Mayfair Witches" TV series also it reminded me a bit of the 1991 "Dark Shadows" {DS} remake/revival series with all new cast. Innovation Comics did a spin-off of the 1991 DS series that lasted 9 issues, and it had the likenesses of the actors from the show.
I've never really liked interview with a vampire all that much as a movie and a bookseries, I do love vampires But im more of Dracula fangirl than anne rices vamps. the new interview series that just concluded i did like. It was very good! their is more of those books if you wish to read them all.
When I read the book I strongly felt that Lestate was messing with Louis's brother because he wanted the plantation. No one else has mentioned this so maybe I need to reread the book. Any else have that thought?
Hm if I recall, Louis didn't meet Lestat till after his brother died in the book. But lestat could have been secretly around tormenting the brother. In the show Lestat and the brother do meet though.
Did you ever read "Memnoch the Devil?" Lestat meets the devil, which is Rice's platform to discuss her views on religion in depth. It was a life changer for me as a young man.
If U want to do another Anne Rice work I would Recommend The Road to Egypt and The Young Messiah. This is a fictionalized (ish) telling of the young Jesus Christ starting in Egypt (where Mary and Joseph fled to after Herod) and is based on the Infancy Gospel of Thomas but sticks with more positve (seriously apparently child Jesus wasnt perfect as he cursed 4 people. Two kids to death and a set of parents to blindness. Oh yeah and the blind parents were the parents of one of the kids he killed) Dont worry the Infancy Gospel of Thomas by most historians is considered to be fictional but heretical at worst by some Christian teachings.
Yay! Someone finally remembers The Young Messiah! From all of the films we got during the Christ-ploitation boom of the 2010s, easily my favorite tied with Scorsese's Silence.
I like Anne Rice was so against Tom Cruise being Least. Like how could mr need for speed really give that iconic character the charm it needs. Welp I was so wrong, this I feel is some of Tom Cruises best work. He killed it as Lestat. Sad we never got the sequel with Tom in that roll agian.
Poor Claudia. She broke my heart. I can't blame her for hating Lestat and finally losing it. He damned an innocent little child to an eternity of horror. A grown woman trapped in a child's body. The fury and frustration of that. And in the movie where she cuts her hair and it immediately grows back. She can't even so much as change her hairstyle to at least give herself a new look. That's...actually pitiful. 😢💔 What a performance by Kirsten Dunst!
Love this even tho it’s a so so adaption. aspects are awesome but; Armand and Lestat should have been recast, just in my opinion. upon reading the book for instance Armand’s young visage is marveled at by Louis. I just can’t get that from Banderas casting despite the gentleman’s talent.
@@WhytheBookWins I agree with aspects of it certainly and it is an iconic performance but feels IMO like Cruise playing a vampire. It’s not an immersive portrayal just have a hard time separating the art from the artist in this depiction.
Please do a episode of a Alice Munro short story vs the TV movie. She won the 2013 Nobel Prize . But after her death it was revealed she abandoned her daughter that her husband raped as a child.
I think until that point, he was more known for playing very American boy-next-door types. So, playing Lestat was certainly an unexpected change in his repertoire that some people couldn't imagine he could pull off.
No Brad Pitt wasn’t the weak link, LOUIS is the weak link. He’s exhausting. Least favorite character in the enter series! 0 out of 10, would not recommend!! 😂😂

@@WhytheBookWins
Can't wait for the next video then.
So true!
I haven't seen this movie in so long. I need to watch it
I've never really liked interview with a vampire all that much as a movie and a bookseries, I do love vampires But im more of Dracula fangirl than anne rices vamps. the new interview series that just concluded i did like. It was very good! their is more of those books if you wish to read them all.
I will for sure be reading the at least the next two in the series!
Do you plan to cover Queen Of The Damn?
Yes! It won't be until next year though.
I like your outfit. Very Victorian! 😊 Don't worry, though. I'm still here, first and foremost, for the book talk. 😉
Thank you 😊
Did you ever read "Memnoch the Devil?" Lestat meets the devil, which is Rice's platform to discuss her views on religion in depth. It was a life changer for me as a young man.
I haven't, but it sounds like one I some find intriguing!
That does sound interesting!
Yay! Someone finally remembers The Young Messiah! From all of the films we got during the Christ-ploitation boom of the 2010s, easily my favorite tied with Scorsese's Silence.
Excellent vlog!!!!... tiktoker GATURKS 💪🏾
Definitely! And yeah, I'm so sad we never got to see him in this role again.
Agreed 😭
Kirsten Dunst was so incredible.
I always felt like The Vampire Lestat was a much better book than Interview. I wish they'd make a movie of that one.
Season three of the show will be an adaptation of that! I'm so excited
Love this even tho it’s a so so adaption. aspects are awesome but; Armand and Lestat should have been recast, just in my opinion. upon reading the book for instance Armand’s young visage is marveled at by Louis. I just can’t get that from Banderas casting despite the gentleman’s talent.
Yeah I definitely am not attached to Banderas as Armand. But Cruise was spot on for Lestat in my opinion!
Oh wow, that's horrible. I've never heard of her. Is there any short story in particular you sold recommend?
I don't know why people even Anne Rice herself had such a problem with Tom Cruise's casting. To me he's the perfect Lesat.
I think until that point, he was more known for playing very American boy-next-door types. So, playing Lestat was certainly an unexpected change in his repertoire that some people couldn't imagine he could pull off.
@karlkarlos3545 that could be it. Neverless, he's my favorite to take on Lesat.
Kirsten Dunst acted circles ariund everyone else in the movie. And everyone else was absolutely fantastic so that's saying a lot.
So true!
Brad Pitt really sucked in this. Kirsten Dunst acted rings around him. What a beautiful dress you're wearing.
Totally agree. And thanks 😊
No Brad Pitt wasn’t the weak link, LOUIS is the weak link. He’s exhausting. Least favorite character in the enter series! 0 out of 10, would not recommend!! 😂😂
Yeah this is such a good point!
The Claudia character is completely about childhood sexual abuse. The fact Rice tries to make Louie anything but a monster is bizarre
Yeah that interpretation was my initial thought. After hearing about Rice's own daughter I now view her story and little differently though.
@@WhytheBookWins i know. But it a blind spot by her
