Sailing across the Equator & we RUN OUT OF WATER!
Переглядів 2,9 тис.21 годину тому
In this weeks video we continue to sail North, across the equator & to the more remote areas of Raja Ampat, Indonesia. Pulau Wayag is truly beautiful. Unfortunately our WaterMaker causes us a few issues and dies at the worst possible time. Oh…& Dee tips Rob’s rum into the sea!
Catching fish while Sailing Indonesia
Переглядів 3,2 тис.14 днів тому
In this weeks sailing video we catch plenty of fish while dragging a lure in Indonesia. We catch what we need ourselves and give any excess to the locals in the villages we visit. These gifts of fish are ALWAYS well received! Then we navigate through an obstacle course of Pearl Farms & visit some Bat Caves.
Sailing to a Famous Dive Site in Indonesia
Переглядів 4,1 тис.21 день тому
This week we sail to Frewin Island in Raja Ampat & visit a well known dive site called the Frewin Wall. Unfortunately we then have to back-track a bit to get some fresh outboard fuel for our dinghy after buying some poor quality fuel at our last stop. The wind is pretty fickle but we do get some good sailing in for most of the time.

In the latest sailing video we leave Seramlout & continue North to stop at the Indonesian Paradise that is known as Turtle Cove. (Actual name is Pulau Sabuda). It is quite remote & an absolutely beautiful place to stop on the way to Raja Ampat. We did this new sailing video WEEKS AGO and forgot to publish it!

Sailing to a super secluded anchorage in Waigeo, Raja Ampat. It was a bit of a mission to get there navigating very strong currents, whirlpools & overfalls. We visit the iconic Kalibiru (Blue River), as well as hidden waterfalls & caves. Mayalibit Bay is quite off the path for most visiting international yachts. Music: "Home" written & performed by the super talented Elena from Straddie. Check ...

Difficult Anchoring in Raja Ampat, Indonesia
Переглядів 3,7 тис.Місяць тому
This week we sail to the paradise that is Raja Ampat but in many places the anchorages are challenging. There is deep water, uncharted reefs & variable bottom terrain. We have to leave a super-tight anchorage near Misool in the rain, in the middle of the night, when our anchor dragged nearly putting us onto a reef.
Clearing Indonesian Customs & Sailing toward Raja Ampat

We used our spinnaker, ballooner & all three working sails. In the end we had a very fas...

I'm new to these videos. Grew up in the 50s & 60s on LI always had runabouts & often had to pull ashore during storms but what you guys are doing is amazing. What are the limits? 20' swells & you guys are laughing!! This is incredible😮
@steve691 We both grew up in families that always had runabouts as well. No way would you want to be in that weather in one! Not sure what the “limit” is for our boat, but this sort of weather is definitely not fun & we do try to avoid it if possible. (Don’t know the reference to LI? Sorry). 👍
Anything above 20knts, it is recommended to sail with the Gib only. This boat is remarkable. What type/model of boat is this?
@Halega101 Hey Halega, It takes 15-20 to get this boat going! LOL. She is a 1998 Amel Super Maramu. 👍
Oh perfect! Another episode and we are sitting down to watch...
@Coleen_West It’s a beautiful part of the world. Hope you enjoy the video.
Lucky conditions, sailing is soooo hard, particularly if solo, it at times can feel punitive, personal, but alas it's just mother sea simply has gallows humor, you folks are hard-core and brave, well done!!
FYI Backwards is the wrong way haha
Thanks Kiwi. 👍

New to this channel. Really like you both. Your very real 😀 and cute together
@jackie5522 Thanks Jackie. 💕💕. Oh…..& Merry Christmas!
@ Merry Christmas to you all as well ❤️

Great Video _ i have a question. It sounded like Waiiti Bay was in Moturua, but isn't it way up in the Cavalli Island group and not the Bay of Islands?
@waynekoide3735 Maybe there is more than one of the same or similar name? We are definitely not locals & this was our first experience of that beautiful area, so I am not sure. We took the name from our charts & I think there was an information board on the beach there with the name on it as well.
Not sure I would have pushed her to 9 knots in that weather. In my day you brought everything in, bare poles, made a bacon sarnie and then readied the boat for the coming storm. (and checked the survival kits and raft/ dinghy.) When its all over, off you go, a bit lower on bacon but otherwise well.
Also not a bad plan. 👍
So nice of course! Did you guys do a video on the installation of your bimini/dodger? Really nice setup for an Amel...
@Colemn-Love The Bimini was designed by a previous owner & he had the frame fabricated, but the canvas top was stuffed. Dee re-designed & made all the new canvas work, including the top, clears etc before we moved onto the boat full-time & when we were still living in a house. The family room looked like a sail loft for a while! This was well before she started making the videos. We love it & wouldn’t change anything. Rob.
Another great episode guys. 👍
@leezettb Thanks. Glad you are enjoying them. Dee is enjoying making them! 👍
I have to admit this video.Makes me want to trade my cutter for a ketch. I have a westsail 32 and I feel like although I think I would have been safe enough it would certainly be more uncomfortable.
@Jim-ro5sl The best of both worlds would be a cutter rigged ketch? Nice to have a staysail in really heavy weather. 👍.
@sailingjaygo I agree with you one hundred percent. 😁
@Jim-ro5sl Start saving for an Amel 54 I suppose! 😁
@@sailingjaygo That could take a while i'm afraid
LOL. Same here! 😁
I was stationed on USS Coral Sea (CVA-43) 2 years 1964-66. I was on destroyer 2 years prior. No more sea sick ever!
@billhampton7395. Hey Bill. Everyone seems different I suppose. Some spend their life at sea & are still prone to seasickness. Some have an experience like yourself & their body seems to adapt. I don’t know why, but women appear more susceptible than men. 👍.
I won't lie I'm in love with sailing just like how skydiving caught me.💯💯
😂
Instead of castigating people for chumming the water, perhaps don't swim in an area when the locals tell you a Tiger shark lives there.
@user-ty60oc7vk6b Hey Ty, you are kidding right? Firstly there are no “locals” at Minerva. Have a look on Google Earth & see where it is. Secondly, Tiger Sharks live almost everywhere I have ever sailed or lived in the last 50yrs or so. Thirdly, you don’t need to be a brain surgeon to understand that it is a dumb idea to teach these amazing animals to associate boats & people with an easy feed. Sorry to be so harsh but I suspect if you spent time interacting with sharks & the sea in general you might feel differently. (Unless you only think about how things affect you directly, and don’t give a rats arse how your behaviour affects others. Hopefully you are not like that, as there are enough of those out there already. Thankfully people like that are not the norm out here sailing). I feel torn about giving such a harsh & blunt reply, as I usually consider that approach is unlikely to change a person’s point of view, but I do feel quite strongly about this. Rob.
Wow the water in the cave looked amazing
@leezettb We are glad we stopped there. It was an interesting area. 👍.
Pull up the head and missen Reefed , you will lean a bit but Stop her from rolling and power forward to windward.
Not sure I understand your comment but when sailing close hauled on a SM, the mizzen creates more drag than lift?
What about the heat exchangers to convert.?
@terrancedick8912 Do you mean the exhaust on the opposite side to the Volvo? It was a relatively simple conversion.
That looks like a v good boat!
Thanks. We think she is great! 👍
@sailingjaygo A great choice for ocean voyages 👍
👍
Yes this illustrates what a real Bluewater boat can do in the hands of a crew that have enough experience. It all worked out but generally closing the coast in a storm is a greater risk than having too and waiting it out offshore while you still have sea room. Not saying they should have done that just wanted to add the caution to never feel that you have to 'get in' especially if that means dealing with off laying dangers or shoal areas. Waves are uncomfortable, rocks are fatal!
@rolandstockham1905 All really good points Roland. The entry into Moreton Bay there in that weather widely avoids the Lee shore until very much protected EXCEPT for Flinders reef, which is a very dangerous hazard. Thanks for your well considered comment. 👍
Hey, I have a bit of a strange question if I could ask it. I have been watching this global sailboat race called the "GGR" ie Golden Globe Race, in which heavy built older full keel sailboats that are 36 feet or less, race around the world non-stop - usually Rustler 36 type boats. They are all very customized with waterproof compartments and builkheads added to them. I was wondering whether your sailboat could do that race through the southern oceans and back up to France or Eng;and, without any modifications? I remember that Amels have water tightness built right in. Plus your sailboat is much faster and bigger??
The Amel Super Maramu is not on the approved list of boats eligible to enter that race. It is however easily capable of that route if in properly maintained condition though.
endless vacation. beautiful
@suteners2111 It does feel like that at times! 👍
Another beautiful video.. Not sure why, but @12:20 I loved listening to that new Yanmar spin up.. Sounds so perfect and much better than the Volvo imp. Sailboat is looking just perfect! And then @12:39 and onward as she sails like an arrow threw perfect conditions. Could watch hours of that type of perfect sailing with a nice mix of storms for good measure... :)
@Coleen-Love Thanks, although we prefer to avoid the storms if we can! 😁
🇹🇷🇹🇷👍👍

Superb film making! Really enjoyed! Thankyou
Wow. Thanks.
What a location ❤
@leezettb This whole country is amazing.
@@sailingjaygo We are three months away from hauling out, then after that, we are on our way. We plan to do Qld and the Kimberlies, then Indo... I bet we get to Darwin and give in and not wait till the next season.. Loving what we see over there.
@leezettb. Great Plan. Have a look at some of Dee’s earlier videos if you haven’t sailed the Qld coast before. You might pick up some more ideas of places to stop (or bypass). There’s also earlier stuff on sailingjaygo Instagram from before she started doing UA-cam. Rob.
@ I’ve been following you guys since Vanuatu and took notes of the anchorages as you guys went up to Indo from the Goldie. Will check out earlier stuff for sure. 👍
👍
Beautiful dive!
@steveb3308 Thanks Steve. It was so easy there. We were just free diving & drifting slowly along the reef wall in a gentle current. Was a cool place. 👍
That was wild that boat is a beast
She is a tough boat alright! 👍
I envy your closed cockpit. Well done guys
@MikeSantis We love it & think it makes a huge difference in bad (or even just wet) weather. 👍
@@sailingjaygo I understand that. In my little 28 ft I only have a sprayhood which I have made an enclosure on to it. That helps but I cannot steer the boat from there and it is not possible in a little boat to have the cockpit enclosed while sailing. Thanks for the video.
👍
Thats an awesome install! How is the performance with it being close to flat? Cheers!
@SailingSeaDreamofClyde Thanks. It works just as well as it did when we had it temporarily mounted on its factory stand on the back deck. No loss of performance at all. Really pleased with how it turned out.
Seeing that hammer and nails go to someone that will truly appreciate and value it, is the best thing I’ve seen on here in a while. Between that and the school supplies you guys gave out in Fiji, I’m starting to get an idea of how the sailing community really can help some of these other islands. I can’t wait till it’s our turn, two more years until my wife and I get our boat. Thanks for sharing!
@Archer_82 Thanks mate. Some things we have given away to villagers are rugby balls (in Fiji), soccer balls (Vanuatu & Indonesia), hammers & nails, drill bits, bush knives (machetes), school supplies, diving masks & fins, reading glasses & sunglasses, clothing, shoes & hats, cooking utensils, fishing equipment, & of course LOADS of fish we have caught. We try to give in the most remote places where it has the biggest impact. One thing we did not think about, but would be appreciated by kids in remote villages here in Indonesia, are English/Indonesian translation phrase books. Many are desperate to learn English which is not generally taught in remote schools. 👍
Wow, awesome and educational. It seemed your Genoa was employed (I didn’t think that could be done with that strong of wind) on a beam reach crossing almost perpendicular to those huge seas. Could definitely see the logic in your route and reason for your course. Thanks for sharing!
Hey Laurie, thanks mate. Angle was about 70 degrees & needed some headsail to keep the bow down. We had no main up & only a tiny bit of mizzen. I must admit that the biggest concern with that set-up was a failure of the genoa furler. We survived, so, all good I suppose. 👍. (PS. Please don’t take our videos as instructional. We just show what we do, with our boat & with our experience. Plenty of others have different opinions. 😁).
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing, even if it’s late. I’m taking notes of these awesome anchorages
@leezettb We loved it there. Really peaceful & just a beautiful place.
God be praised you guys made it in safely. By the way, what kind of boat is it you have and what are its dimensions? Good video! Thanks.

It looks like you caught a rouge wave moving @12:09 it's much higher than the rest and the back is much more foamy and looks to be traveling faster then the rest
@danfox1458 Hey Dan, there were some big waves but unlikely a rogue one. We got hit by a true rogue wave crossing Bass strait a couple of years ago & it was at least double the size of the prevailing waves & much, much steeper than the rest. It knocked Jaygo flat! The only time we have ever taken serious water into the cockpit (even with the full clears enclosed).
This is how you grow and become stronger, the important thing is that you are okay.
@stosedan. So true!
Your boat looked like it did incredible in some absolutely massive breaking waves. I know from spending a lot of time on the water fishing that the camera does not do those waves Any justice whatsoever as to how large they actually were. For anyone who doesn’t know you can’t even tell that it’s not completely calm on camera until the waves are over 1 m and a 7 m wave is higher than a two-story house.
@redflametech Thanks Red. Yes the boat handled it really well. You are right about trying to get it on camera as well.
Wow! Amazing!
@Chad. Fortunately it is not like that very often! 👍

@ericerven5456 Used plenty when working it hard during run in period & now seems to have settled at around 4.5l/hr in normal use.
Great video !!
Thanks Eric.
Food was worth the wait by the looks delish ! What gorgeous kids . Stay safe 🫶
Thankyou S my gorgeous friend! D. Xxx
I reckon that in such conditions, sailing on a Amel, Oyster, Contest, Hallberg Rassy or similar makes a huge difference in comfort 😮. I cannot imagine sailing my boat, which is a racer with an open cockpit/exposed helm through such conditions😨. Great boat and courageous crew, congratulations for weathering the storm the way you did 👍
@pierrevanderdeure8164 Very true Pierre. “Horses for Courses” as they say. Conversely, racing an Amel around a racecourse on a weekend would not be much fun either! 👍.
I wonder how many ppl knowing what’s in store, they simply throw stuff overboard?
@jackbarnes6929 Hey Jack, we suspect that most do exactly that. The problem is the inconsistency with the officials. Some allow things, some don’t. For some officers, I am sure it is a power trip. Others are really cool & use common sense.
What are you trying to prove by not having your emergency gear on? One rouge wave and you’re in the water in an instant. Just makes no sense to me. 🤷🏻♂️
@mclovin9578 Not trying to prove anything. I guess you mean rogue wave? Yes we have experienced rogue waves in the past, including in Bass Strait & no, we are not in the water in an instant. We take our risk factors very seriously but I suppose you have a different risk profile to us. We also have a boat we know well with regard to her handling characteristics in foul weather. We learn from every experience & with hindsight would probably make the same decisions again in the same circumstances. PS. Not many sailors we have met have experienced serious rogue waves. We have. I hope that makes sense. Rob.
@ Rogue (auto correct). I mean no disrespect. I know a thing or two about risk as I raced motocross for years. To me it’s kinda like racing without a helmet. 🤷🏻♂️ Not to belabour the point but there’s nothing more unpredictable than the sea and there are countless stories of masts snapping, rudders breaking etc that it just seems to me you’d want to take every precaution during rough weather. Again, no disrespect. In fact, the complete opposite. I have the guts to jump a bike 40 feet in the air but I’d never want to be more than 40 feet from land in a sailboat. Haha All the best from 🇨🇦 M
No worries.
You take care of that knee.... I think you should do MRI scans just to be on the safe side... Take care... Nice video as usual 🎉🎉
@rockyfire101 Thanks Rocky. The knee is all good. Cleaned & disinfected it straight away. Just another battle scar now. 😁.
Now this is called a real champions.... Big fan guy's.... Amazing 🎉🎉
@rockyfire101. Thanks Rocky! 👍
Next time put up some heavy metal, or whatever you like, it's great as it breaks the tension. Rock on 😅
LOL. Yes, we had a bit on.
I’m just catching up on this channel. Thanks for the footage. I think Rob should toss the skipper’s cap to you Dee. That was a very, very cool and calm example of owning a tough situation. I’m reminded of a time many years ago when my skipper excused himself with sea sickness as we were about to sail across the Bay of Biscay. Thankfully, it was nothing like your experience. Impressive.
@noellavery7481 Hey Noel, yes Dee is a legend. I just read your comment to her & she loved it. Rob.
