Hey Phil, we are always very careful near the water in Croc country. We keep the dinghy between us & the water when getting in/out & never loiter near the waters edge. The croc we saw on the beach at Flinders was massive. Easy 4-5m. He was very close to the anchored boats & when he slid into the water he just sat on the bottom close to the shore. We could easily see him in the clear water when we knew where to look. Our anchor is 40kg Sarca Excel. The bottom there where we were dragging was broken coral rubble & very poor holding in that wind. I suppose we could have held with more scope but felt better moving around the corner to a better & more protected anchorage. Rob.
If the Sarca Excel doesn’t hold I don’t think another anchor would either. It was very windy, the bottom was rubble & I did not have enough scope out once the current started running again. RE: The Croc. That was the biggest one I have ever seen in the wild.
Hey John. The boat was never in danger. We had planned to move to a better anchorage around the corner anyway & the boat was dragging very slowly in poor holding. I would do the same again. There honestly was no urgency. (Edited as my initial response I felt was unfair). Rob.
@sailingjaygo yeah, I knew there was no danger, I'm sure neither of you would be complacent if there was. I love how you're both in tune with the boat and each other. My initial sentence was more what we've come to expect from the "must have drama" channels.
@johnmclachlan1023. Thanks mate. We do try to show how it really is for us. I know what you are saying about some who manufacture drama. Definitely not us! I hope I didn’t come across as too defensive as I know sometimes I have that tendency. Rob. 😁👍
@sailingjaygo no mate, not defensive. Some people love to criticise those actually doing it, and it's sometimes hard to know a person's intent from a sentence or two. I try not to criticise anyone even when I see seemingly glaring mistakes, and not to those with far more experience than I. Sometimes those "mistakes" are the best option in a given circumstance. If I feel I may have something to offer to new sailors, I sometimes will, but always respectfully. Cheers John
great video-- where you worried about taking the dinghy near the mangroves in case of crocs? Also what type of anchor do you use? Phil

@@sailingjaygo the Sarca is my favourite anchor--I have one on all my boats, interesting that it wasn't holding... that was a big croc...

@@sailingjaygo agree re the SARCA, they've saved me several times...
👍
Typical youtuber, We're dragging anchor, can we save the boat?
Rob, only slowly, I'll just finish my coffee and toast.
Stay safe.
