Since 2015 I have been restoring a 1959 LHD Morris Minor 2 door saloon (sedan if in North America). The car has not been driven in 20 years and I am attempting a nut and bolt rebuild, my first! Since retiring from BDO in the lockdown summer of 2020, the pace has picked up, so maybe it will be finished in 2021 or 2022, watch this space. UPDATE 2024 - still working on it...
We are avid walkers and so my channel includes some walk/hike videos.
Finally there is the FIN48s; a band that never made it to the big time, or indeed any time at all.

Thank you! More coming soon...petrol tank, wiring loom, doors...
I put grease on the gasket for the rocker cover
I've got a 67 Morris Minor with 1098 engine and that has the breather tube on the rocker cover.
Oh that takes me back. I had a habit of breaking half shafts on my Wolsley 1500 ( I think about four in five years ) It was probably a combination of over aggressive driving and wide wheels and big tyres putting extra strain on the axle. I became quite proficient at replacing them. They always broke at the differential right at the end of the splines. I remember those oil seals which would leak, getting oil on the rear brakes. I had to work on them on the car outside my house, not in a nice garage. Happy days !!!
Only just found this video but had to comment. In 1970 I bought my 1st car which was a 1961 Wolsley 1500. In the 70s all my mates were modifying their cars, two of them had Minors one with a Sprite engine and the other an MGB unit. Another had a Ford 100E with a Cortina 1500 GT engine and they all modified the suspension and brakes to cope. I had very little money so had to settled for the standard engine but fitted wide wheels and lowered the suspension and added double roll bars at the front and a single at the rear. The Wolsley 1500 had the same suspension setup as the Minor so was easy to lower by cranking the torsion bars round 2-3 splines and adding lowering block at the rear but it was still too soft for hard cornering so I hit on the idea the stiffen th shock absorbers. I removed all the drain plugs and filler plugs and bounced the car up and down untill all the oil was drained out then filled them all up with 90 gear oil. I had that car for five years and then sold it to a friend and those shock absorbers were still good years later. The handling was much improved and it was still a comfortable ride. Great videos !!! I'm watching them all now.
Might give that a try on my 1970 Morris Minor Traveller front dampers (rears are now telescopic).
Really great these videos are done but it's not possible to see anything due to lighting
Sorry about that. I've been trying to improve the quality. Thanks for the tip.
They are a good temporary plug patch. You still need to get the tyre patched on the inside with a correct vulcanising patch, as the rope patches can leak and are not that reliable (sorry 20 years in the tyre industry makes me wince every time I see an emergency rope plug).
I actually didn't know that, thanks for the tip. Our local tire place just uses these rope ones.
@@goingundersground Yeah, the full patch repair uses the reamer (hole borer), remove tyre from rim, then scuff the inside of the tyre, apply bonding agent and then a mushroom patch (a patch that bonds to the tyre and sticks out of the hole in the tyre), roll the patch down to aid in vulcanisation., apply talcum powder and then remount the tyre. Balance the tyre and charge like a wounded bull, or if you had a sticker for the company i worked for on the car the puncture repair was free. Tah dah!
Shouldn't the piping go in the cylinders from bottom to top? As in: Inlet on the bottom, bridging pipe out from the top, then in the bottom of the other cylinder, with the bleed nipple on top? If the inlet is on the top, you could have an airlock in the first cylinder...
Thanks for the comment, but everything I've seen shows the bridging pipe at the bottom of both cylinders. Hopefully the bleeding will be OK once I get around to it...
@@goingundersground My own were fitted as I mentioned, I've had to replace one and left it as it was...
Nice!
Thanks! I'm taking my time, hopefully one day I will drive this thing!
It’s looking good Tim your Morris journey has been great to watch. Great Video.
Thanks!
My early cars had drums, first car drums all round, never seen a design that doesn’t have the little spring loaded pin/clips to retain the shoes back against the backplate, is that how they are on a minor..? 🤔
Exploded diagrams for Morris Minors do not show those little 'beehive' hold down springs and when I stripped down my car they were not present. However ESM do carry them, so it is confusing. Minors had 7 inch front drums originally but later ones were fitted with 8 inch drums; maybe the beehives were only fitted to the later ones? They are definitiely used on the rear brakes though.
Nice job. Thanks for sharing.👍
Thanks for watching!
Old trick was to paint the end of the adjuster white, so you could see it when you turned the drum. All the best with your project 👍
Many thanks, great tip!
I guess there is no disc brake conversion in the works for project Morris Minor.
Not yet anyway! Maybe once it gets moving and I discover what the stopping distance is like, I might change my mind...
Hi Tim the new front chassis legs where they plug welded about every 2cm. I am about to start this on my Morris
Hi there - I had a professional welder handle the chassis leg because I didnt trust my rudimentary welding skills - I recall he seam welded it.
Nice colour
Thank you! Cheers!
Useful video. Got to have a go at doing my 1970 Traveller's (again, after several years) as the bush in the RHS of the chassis leg (RHD car) has worn badly, which causes some 'snatch' of the clutch pedal at the bottom of its travel.
I'm glad my video might be of some use to you!
Great stuff
Thank you
What diameter is the crank where the sprocket fits?
Very good job. Well done. I love to see it. I also restauration a Morris Minor.
Was watching this thinking you have put the light switch junction onto the wrong side of the car. Then realised its because its a LHD!! Very tidy work and its looking really good.
Yes it can be a challenge sometimes! When I got the brake pipe kit from ESM, the diagram showing the layout was RHD so I had to scan it and reverse it!
Great update Tim. The wonderful quality of your work so far is very evident in the footage. You are going to have an amazing car at end of the rebuild!!!!
Many thanks! I'm hoping to make good progress this year now that our kitchen remodel is almost done...
Well done and thanks for your dedication to giving informed and interesting updates.
My pleasure! Thanks for the comment. Getting there...
Beautiful, I love it thank you
Hi mate great vid! Just a quick question, I also have changed my moggy to a duplex chain, I put the cover and crankshaft pulley back on after I was finished and decided to start it up for a bit to see how it was running without the coolant etc, after about 3 mins of running I turned it off but noticed white smoke coming from the top coolant inlet, if you have any answer for this I’d love to here it!
To add to that the exhaust manifold is a little bit hot aswell so could be that I was just running it for too long?
need aaduplex for all that power lol the single chain lasted 40 years why duplex
thank you for the info I am working one of these at the moment and was trying to work out how the front end come apart the torsion bar suspension is set up a bit different to the old Mopar's i am used too
Woodland Hills is a nice area. Any more going on?
The A series engine was good, but built to a budget. Oil leaks due to poor oil seals and... no tensioner on the timing chain which would be more effective than an untensioned duplex one IMHO.
Previous owner here. How wonderful to find your channel and see the Morris’s restoration!
So glad to hear from you! As you can see from all the videos (40 so far!) it's coming along! I'm hoping to finish it in the next two years, we'll see...🤓
Thanks a lot for this video! I had a massive dark oil stain under my car one night and couldn't figure out if it was engine oil or transmission oil, turned out to be steering rack oil! Looks like I need new gaitors.
Glad it was of some use! Mine has not yet seen action as the restoration is still ongoing; hoping I have no issues, fingers crossed...
I'm losing the will to live
Ditto. 😊
I use cunifer and the same die and anvil tool as the harbour freight version from Sealey. Inconsistent but doable. I reannealed the ends afterwards because I was worried about stress cracking but I’m not sure I had to. All fine 5 yrs later.
Yes we ended up getting even better flares with the Craftsman/HF tool by using a small steel collar to hold the die in place. Many thanks
I found when bleeding the brakes if you jack the car to get the master cylinder as high as possible in relation to the bleed point it was helpful .I took my pipes to a small local garage and they flared them for me. I paid them of course .They used a hydrolic thing!!!! I also struggled trying to do it myself so kudos to you for your perseverance . The body work is looking great.
Thanks David, good to know; do you have a servo?
No I never had a servo. I no longer own a moggy though I had 3 over different times. The brakes were always fiddly. The placing of the master cylinder in the chassis leg was an issue!!!!!I used to get a mate to crow bar the torsion bar out of the way to get to the nuts to remove the cylinder .This saved dropping the torsion bar. Then replace the bolts in the opposite direction which made future removal easier.@@goingundersground
There is also A Professional Hydraulic Brake Flaring kit. That's very nice to use, but is Expensive.
Agreed, very pricey!
These engines are very agricultural, low power and simple. All British cars of that era were terribly underpowered with very little time spent on innovation and improvement.
Thank you for this. I truly enjoy watching your engine rebuild videos. I just bought a morris and the engine is in good condition and I'm looking forward to rebuilding it one day.
We were hoping to visit on our next trip to the UK. But we only use public transport and it’s too rural to get there. Thanks for the video. Are you aware of any Morris Minor related activities? Our next trip is September Oct 24
Hi there - you could check out the UK Morris Minor owners club - they have many national and regional events across the country. www.mmoc.org.uk/Events/
I need some parts of morris minor car
The ice looks to be in terrible condition...
My dads favourite car was a Morris 1000 Traveller, use to borrow it when I passed my test in 1972, if I had the money I would love one now, instead of all this modern rubbish, Helped my mate with his 1937 Ford 10 got the parts from Beaulieu auto jumble
Which model welder did you use Tim ? Thanks for the very helpful video.
Excellent video but why the annoying ' music ' ??
Marvellous!
Did you have the original king pins and repaint the old ones? On the torque bars do you have little play on the spines is this ok? And also does the bottom pivot t piece unsrew from the extended torque bar?
What's a ' zerk ' fitting regarding greasing in between the bushes please ? I think you said zerk. Thanks for the video.
It’s American for grease nipple. The patent for the Zerk fitting was granted to Oscar U. Zerk in January 1929…
@@goingundersground Thanks a lot. Never too old to learn !
lol even in australia its a grease fitting also thanks mr zerk
Very encouraging to see a British manufacturer producing such a variety of goods. Thanks a lot.
good to have helper on putting the valves back eh
Do they sell these moris. Minors. !!!
I remember back in th late 80s going to my local car carpet manufacturer and they cut and sewed it while I waited I remember how pleased I was to fit it into my Morris traveller as last part of the restoration.I sold that car in 1988 to a young lady artist and always remember her being so delighted with the car,I just knew she would treasure it. Hope you are enjoying your trip Tim.
It was a great trip; ESM, Newton Commercial and a coronation thrown in for good measure!
