Here we go the battle i was waiting for! Let's see if my boy gets another W!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Lol Bernard the Pit Fiend leaving angerly was a classy touch
Bernard was displeased. A strict training regimen with a very final chance may be on the cards!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG let's not forget the future tournaments where he'll be like "fine, I'll do it myself"
May need to find a battle-stand nemesis for him so we can arrange a CR 20 one shot 😂
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG don't worry, I'll be sure to look if someone BIG is watching from the stands, someone he knows, personally.
The devil could have used all of its tail spines with disadvantage, safely outside the nothic's range... but that would have been a very boring combat.
Yeah, I factored that into the combat while running it. I thought that the devil may panic a bit upon missing so many spines and would decide not to waste them as pot shots because of that, also factoring in its supposed advantage against magical attacks. The RNG just shine upon it this time!
Wow that was a hell of surprise!!! It’s crazy how unlucky they were this is a great one and absolutely love seeing an upset like this!!! Spined Devil: Tail spine +4 to hit vs 15 AC 50% chance to hit / 25% with disadvantage (16x0.50)=8 Critical (12x0.05)=0.6 Total DPR=8.6 Tail spikes with disadvantage (16x0.25)=4 Critical (12x0.0025)=0.03 Total DPR=4.03 Total of six rounds that can be made with tail spike Bite and Fork +2 to hit vs 15 AC 40% chance to hit (8.5x0.40)=3.4 Critical (8.5x0.05)=0.42 Total DPR=3.82 Six rounds to kill Nothic: Claw +4 to hit vs 13 AC 60% chance to hit (13x0.60)=7.8 after resistance=3.9 Rotting Gaze DC 12 Con save at advantage 25% chance to fail (10.5x0.25)=2.62 Six rounds to kill with Claw Nine rounds to kill with Rotting Gaze
Anything is possible in the arena! Very insightful breakdown as always. RNG really had a hand in this one… on both sides!
nothic has everthing over spined devil,he only has lower wisdom
A CR 2 brute stat wise, no doubt.
Spiky dudes duking it out
Hadn’t even thought about that, guess the Nothic is pretty spiky too!
2:11 sorry I might be hearing it wrong but... +4 to hit and +3 to damage? Shouldn't it be a +5 to hit then?
You’re hearing right, and yeah, it’s an odd one, but that what the official Nothic stat block states for the claw attack! Could have been a balancing thing maybe? (Or an official error of course 😂)
@DungeonBoy-TTRPG it just feels "wrong" (not the video, it is great) like I'm used to the attack and damage being similar to the player characters, modifier + proficiency, this feels weird.
Yeah, it kinda feels almost ‘dirty’ from a RAW perspective 😂 But then, the Nothic is intentionally written as being ‘weird’ so maybe this was WotC attempt at an Easter egg / joke.
I personally thing it was a mistake, as WOTC has made many of those.
It’s certainly possible.
I'm rooting for the Nothic. Their design is just so awesome
Their lore is great too. Wizards cursed for trespassing into the realms of forbidden knowledge that their minds simply weren’t prepared to comprehend!
I feel it was unfair to have the Ettercap attack the mimic as it hadn't given itself away by moving yet.
In this scenario they are in the arena and have essentially been told to attack each other, something the Ettercap was more than happy to do. Any other, non-forced combat environment though and I’d agree with you.
Im rooting for the allosaurus to win
A worthy contender for sure!
@DungeonBoy-TTRPG you should do an all dinosaurs arena battle at some point lol like monsters type battles
Now there’s an idea! Prehistoric Punch-Out series would be crazy 🥊 Themed battles such as Celestials vs Fiends would be awesome as well! Need some more suggestions now, haha
Could also do group battles. Or like story based. Create a group of soldiers on watch that get swarmed by Zombies and have to defend a guard tower or the city gate. Lol that might take a minute to do but still
I’ve got plans for a few of those too. The old Animated Armour vs Giant Rats video was a popular one 😂
Bulette looks like a subterranean draconic life form
Flavour it up, give a breath weapon, and hey presto!
Great fight like always I think the Mind Master being not reduced on his first turn should of just broke the Web with the dagger but maybe they didn’t know that was a option or a good option also love that you are using the Invisibility but the Hide action is useless while already invisible the new PHB has changed the rules on Hide to a DC 15 stealth check to gain the Invisible condition which is a good change to the rules but redundant for the Mind Master Duergar Mind Master: +5 to hit vs 13 AC 65% chance to hit Dagger (23x0.65)=14.95 Critical (21x0.05)=1.05 Total DPR=16 Three rounds to kill Web has 5 hp with 10 AC Non reduced damage is 5.5 piercing damage on average With a 80% chance to hit and a 75% chance to destroy the Web it one attack the mind master has a 60% chance to destroy the Web in one attack and 84% chance to destroy Web with both attacks Only a 50% chance to escape with a Strength check Ettercap: +4 to hit vs 14/19 AC 55% / 30% chance to hit 79% / 51% chance to hit with advantage Round 1 Bite (11x0.55)=6.05 Claw (7x0.55)=3.85 Critical (9x0.05)=0.45 Critical (5x0.05)=0.25 Round 2+ Bite (11x0.30)=3.3 Claw (7x0.30)=2.1 Total DPR Round one=10.6 Total DPR Round two=6.1 Six rounds to kill
The maths really shows the balance on this one, a tough one with a lot of RNG required to give the Ettercap a shot! I feel like the most accurate reaction a creature would make upon getting webbed would be to struggle briefly before coming to the rational conclusion that two dagger strikes are probably more beneficial! Only a creature expecting to be webbed would ready up for that eventually I reckon, and the MM may not have had previous Ettercap experience! But yeah, subsequent webbings after breaking from the first, would have been dealt with the good old knife method. A fun one to run, and now we get to see what happens when the Intellect Devourer takes on the Mind Master!
@ Yeah that fight is one I’ve been expecting and I’m excited for it!!!
This was the likely outcome based on statblocks. Low int against creature dealing psychic damage? Web attacks against a moderate dex enemy? The ettercap came into this fight needing the blessing of RNGesus more than its opponent.
Yup, the MM has some really strong abilities, another CR 2 monster that could be worthy of a higher rating based on its kit. The Ettercap relies a lot of the poison bite too, with the MMs resistance really coming in to bat!
Unlucky match-up for the ettercap, but it gave a good showing.
It certainly did, lots of twists turns in this one!
That extra psychic damage combined with the Reduce are hard carrying that short bastard! If only we had someone capable of flying to deal with him in the future... *stares intensely towards the Spined Devil*
It’s time will come… if it can defeat the Nothic and its eye beam of death!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPGIT BETTER! -Bernard the Pit Fiend
I believe that in the new rules, you can still attack a hidden creature, they're just invisible and therefore you have disadvantage. (So there's not much point in hiding if you're already invisible.) Also, the ettercap didn't get a recharge roll on the turn it made a Perception check.
My bad if that’s the case. I think the new rules are kinda confusing (not that they weren’t already…) From my understanding, and invisible creature isn’t hidden until it hides. So the hide action is necessary to provide the stealth check which initiates the hidden condition. Invisible just means you can’t target something if you have no means of seeing it. In the new rules, if you fail the perception DC to combat the stealth DC, you cannot detect the creature at all. Thats also why I had the Mind Master stay slightly out of range of the Ettercap to avoid any random flailing claws / bite. I could be wrong here, but that’s the bonus you get from hiding while invisible, otherwise yeah, what’s the point!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG In the new rules, it seems like invisibility IS the benefit you get from hiding. There's nothing about hidden creatures being impossible to attack. I don't think it makes much sense, but that's what it seems to say.
Which is wild. I did some extra research into the functionality while making this battle, and the gen break consensus was that invisible hides you from sight and targeting in general from creatures that can’t see you, while the hide action covers the base of allowing for the stealth check which means things can’t perceive you, hence the DC 15 Dex (Stealth) check. That check then forces a creature to make a DC X perception check where X is the roll made the creature to stay hidden. Either way, it’s a confusing system in my option, especially if you’re right, and hide effectively makes invisible redundant…
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPGthis is one of those moments where the written rules are better ignored if it doesn't make sense. The creature it's invisible while in a very chaotic and loud environment? Difficult to pin point its location, Perception Check needed, but it's still hard to attack an invisible creature. The creature it's invisible while in a 1v1 where the opponent is solely focused on it and has enough environment elements to "follow" it? The Perception Check to pin point the creature MIGHT not be needed (or at least maybe just as a free action), so the invisible creature may need a Stealth Check to become "lost" by beating the Passive Perception of the opponent. This could be interpreted in very different ways depending on the situation, DM's choice.
Oh 100%. DM fiat out rules the rule book in most cases. I think the conclusion reached worked well for this combat.
Fun fact: the Hellfire Orb is simply the re-interpretation of the 1e version of the Death Knight ability to cast a 20d6 fireball. Of course with 5e rules this wouldn't be possible, so they gave him this new ability wich is also much cooler and thematic in my opinion.
Damn, gotta love those insane 1e spells 😂 I like that they flavoured up the hellfire orb with both fire and necrotic damage for 5e, deffo feels like launching a nuke when you cast it!
dracolith next i guess?
It’s not a yes or a no as of right now… the Dracolich is awesome though, would definitely like to make a longer video on them given the chance. The Death Battle only scratches the surface of what they are capable of, especially as I only used the base adult dragon variant. So much more to talk about when it comes to the misdeeds performed by the ancients of their ilk!
One of these guys is on the 'most lethal low CR creatures' list and the other is not.. poor broodguard.
Very true… it’s definitely in there for a reason!
Oh boy I had no idea that this matchup was going to show up for me! :D Two of my favorite creatures, and this is just the Blue dragon Dracolich made from a deceased adult dragon. Now if it was an ancient red or some other type of dragon... Who knows how worse off it might be... And could the knight triumph perhaps against an adult White dragon dracolich? A great fight however! I liked the end of the poor death knight, a proper black knight end.. Just a scratch.
Glad you enjoyed 😄 You’re absolutely right, the Dracolich featured is far from its final form, and there are so many variants to choose from! Blue is definitely up there as one of the tougher CR 17 versions, so a white or even green dracolich may have proved less challenging for our death knight challenger! That being said, I’m pleased with how the balance worked out on this one, and after all, I’m sure the DK will be back, as it is ‘invincible’ 😅
Spoilers It seems forgetting magic resistance didn't end up mattering. The dracolich still won, and the death knight didn't ever have to make a saving throw against magic.
Yeah, another reason I wasn’t too worried about that one. Without the legendary resistance though, things would have come to a conclusion a lot faster!
Damn that Death Knight fought like a giga chad. An honourable loss for a small man vs a giant reptile.
Sigma energy up until the last blow.
Nice back and forth. That was an exciting battle.
Glad you enjoyed it! I was pleasantly surprised with how even the battle was. Glad I gave the DK the legendary abilities too, made things much more interesting if you ask me!
Only three more years until all the death battles are this CR.
😂 I think that battle season would take my pc 3 years to render.
He can't keep getting away with this!
He’s a cool, calculated, brain stealing machine!
Correct, only audio on the left channel!
Very confused as to why this is happening. The exported video has audio in both channels when I play it back… I’ll look into it again.
Snake vs brain
A legendary combo
I had no doubts and I can’t wait to see the fights to follow!!! Just FYI On average it takes the Yuan-ti three rounds to kill the Intellect Devourer and with winning initiative the chances of landing the stun is 94% So the poor Snake had around a 6% chance of winning this encounter Intellect Devourer: Claws +4 to hit vs 14 AC 55% chance to hit Devour Intellect DC 12 Intelligence save 65% chance for Yuan-ti to fail save Claws (7x0.55)=3.85 Critical (5x0.05)=0.25 Devour Intellect (11x0.65)=7.15 On failure 3d6 rolled if the total is 6 or higher Yuan-ti is stunned and default killed Chance of rolling a 6 or higher is 95.37% Total DPR=11.25 would have increase due to advantage from Yuan-ti reckless feature Chance of hitting with Devour Intellect and rolling 6 or higher are 62% Round 2 chance 86% Round 3 chance 94% Round 4 chance 98% Round 5 chance 99% Yuan-ti Broodguard +4 to hit vs 12 AC 65% chance to hit / 87% with advantage All attacks will be with advantage Bite (6.5x0.87)=5.65 Critical (4.5x0.0975)=0.43 Claws (11x0.87)=9.57 Critical (7x0.0975)=0.68 Total DPR=16.33 After resistance DPR=8.16 Three rounds to kill
Ouch… the odds really were stacked one way in this one.
Is it just me or is there only audio in the left ear on this video?
Apparently so. When I playback the exported video I have audio in both channels, so it sure if it’s the upload which is being weird? I’ll look into it.
This is the second video in a row from you where I'm only getting audio in one headset ear 🙃
It seems so. The exported video has audio in both channels, so I’m not sure what is going on with the upload. I double checked before I uploaded and it sounded fine to me. Out of interest, are you listening on headphones?
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG Heads phones as well. Right ear only.
Thanks, I’ll try and see if there’s something weird going on in my editing software.
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG Yep yep. I had to take the right one out because it was driving me crazy only hearing from the left 😂
Sorry about that…😕 I’m looking into fixing it!
That Intellect Devourer is an absolute menace!
It really is! 🧠
I, for one, welcome our new Intellect Devourer overlords.
Like I figured but didn’t expect it to be such a one sided duel! The Cultist really should’ve just tried dealing damage Command is an amazing control spell but unless your using it to make a enemy flee and proc a bunch of opportunity attacks it doesn’t do much for damage and that’s what the cultist needed in this fight He should’ve just used Inflict Wounds that still wouldn’t match the Ogre but it would’ve kept it a close fight Cult fanatic: Dagger 70% Spells 65% Dagger (9x0.70)=6.3 Critical (5x0.05)=0.25 Total DPR=6.55 Spiritual Weapon (5.5x0.65)=3.57 Critical (4.5x0.05)=0.22 Total DPR=3.79 Inflict Wounds 1st level (16.5x0.65)=10.72 Critical (16.5x0.05)=0.82 Total DPR=11.54 Four 1st level slots Inflict Wounds 2nd level (22x0.65)=14.3 Critical (22x0.05)=1.1 Total DPR=15.4 Three 2nd level slots 46.2+11.54x2=69.28 Five rounds to kill Ogre: Club 70% (13x0.70)=9.1 Critical (9x0.05)=0.45 Total DPR=9.55 Four Rounds to kill
Sometimes that’s the way it goes in the arena! I figure that the Cult Fanatic would have gone for Command over anything else in an attempt to escape more than anything else. While these fights are about the damage output, it’s also worth considering how the creatures would respond to the circumstance. I think the CF has enough intelligence to realise that staying in Ogre range is a terrible idea, but maybe not quite enough to push through its fear with logic to realise that an all out assault is its best bet to achieve victory. As always though, the numbers don’t lie!
Once again, wit and spellcasting prove themselves to be inferior to the unmatched tactic of extreme violence
Can’t hurt something words if it doesn’t understand them!
This was surprisingly close considering how mathing this out, optimally the nothic would just spam rotting gaze every turn, and essentially every single attack in the fight is a 50/50 on if it lands or not, since the animated armour needs an 11 or better to save the rotting gaze, whilst it needs an 11 or better to hit the animated armour, so on average, the animated armour attacking twice means it will usually hit once, like it did this fight, dealing 5.5 damage on average, the nothic would hit every other turn, dealing 10.5 damage on avergae each hit, so 5.25 dpr, with 12 extra hp the fight was stacked in the nothic's favour (Not gonna fully explain the methods but claws have an average dpr in this fight of 4.55, so it wasn't super suib optimal to attempt them in the hopes the fight is a little more exciting than just flipping coins all day) so it was lucky the animated armour made it as close as it did, especially with the nothic essentially getting af ree turn due to winning initiative getting it that spacing trap to make the armour dash on round 1.
This was very exciting due to how quick everything happened. However, being an old head (playing since A-D&D) and open to instant death rules the ogre would have lost as soon as it started to grovel. Being helpless the target would be vulnerable to an auto hit at x5 damage because it could not defend itself. Possibly just a house rule, I could not find this anywhere but my own memories. However, as a DM, I would have not have given the Ogre its opportunity attack, due to groveling, while the opponent withdrew.
That is an absolutely brutal rule! In 5e, as far as attacks go, going prone only imposes disadvantage on a prone creatures attacks, and gives the attacker of said prone creature advantage on attacks against it. I can see why people say AD&D was brutal, x5 times damage for any reason is absolutely nuts 😂 I’d quite like to play it at some point to experience the madness!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG I like it because it gives my players other build options that do something else besides throwing out as much damage as possible. It also makes monsters that can cause paralysis, sleep or the restrained condition a lot more dangerous. So you might want to remind them that the x5 goes both ways if you decide to use it in the future. I also use another auto kill rule that's completely home brew. Score a critical hit, you roll the D20 again. Score a second critical hit (Death hit), roll the D20 a third time to beat armor. If roll 3 is a success, the target is dead unless its huge or bigger. The target is dead if its below half health, otherwise deal x5 for huge or x4 for gargantuan.
No offense but you ran the Fanatic very poorly in this one. There are so many things the fanatic could/should have done in this fight. Hold person would have been a much better option than command. Not to mention running away from the ogre without using shield of faith or disengage made little sense. A hold person mixed with inflict wounds would've possibly dealt 6d10 damage (or 8d10 if upcasted at 2nd level).
@@TheManWithOneSock you're wrong in the first and last part, hold person would not work as it functions only against humanoids, the ogre is a giant.
@@The_mekboy_you_deserve Fair point. I overlooked that. Regardless grovel was the worst command option to use in this scenario. Flee would have made much more sense.
@@TheManWithOneSock I suppose we find in agreement with the fleeing option being the better one, given that the cultist probably wants distance when paired with an ogre, would've been great also to see the spiritual weapon in action, but he used all his actions trying command or doing nothing (last round), regardless I think it wouldn't have changed much the result, the cultist hadn't much in the way of offense or defense, more like cc.
This one was a toughie, especially as the Ogre got the initiative. Unfortunately hold person does not work against the ogre as it isn’t a humanoid, but a giant. The plan with using the command word grovel was to allow the cult fanatic to escape, hopefully avoiding the ogres attack at disadvantage, which would then force the ogre to use half movement to stand which would only allow it to move within 20ft of the fanatic. Had that have worked, the CF would then have dropped spiritual weapon and sacred flame, potentially setting up for an inflict wounds should it have survived the ogres onslaught the turn after. In an ideal world, the CF would have succeeded on the first command, which would have allowed for an inflict wounds at advantage if grovel forced the ogre prone. When I run these, I also try to factor in intelligence levels, and from my outlook, the CF was set on grovel to begin with, and witnessing a giant barrel of angry muscle charging it down would likely not give it much room to think of other words outside that which it prepared tactically. That being said, flee would have been a viable option, although the Ogre could the move back into range, throw its javelin, and go from there. This was a very difficult fight for the CF which relies mostly on CC options. I would have liked that first command to have hit though… the 2nd level inflict wounds could have changed things up.
What a surprise 🤯
All about those shock outcomes.
:(
I’m sure the cult fanatics fan base are preparing another for a future appearance.
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG he got his ass handed to him haha
Nice win for the underdog.
😂
Woohoo! Perfect betting for a whole round! Big thanks goes out to the Ogre for giving it their all out there. Can't wait to see what Round 2 has in store.
Some great prediction skills. Need to get your outlook on the quarter finals!
Ogre had no chill and was too stupid to be manipulated.
Just as the gods intended.
is audio balance off any one else, just right ear and no left?
yeah it was, it changed at around 5:15
Interesting, I’ll have to look into that. First time it’s happened?
Once again hydrogen bomb VS coughing baby?
A heavy handed repeat it would seem!
I would love to see allosaurus win the tournament. Just pure primal power dominating magical beings with cheat abilities.
I think it’s fair to say the Allosaurus has a lot of fans at this point. 🪭
all this, and u dint mention "aurora"; just, do better...
Old video made to help people with no prior knowledge out with some options. Still never heard of Aurora, will have to check it out, video could do with an update anyway.
I love both these Monsters and always enjoy running Ghasts or Ghouls in my games unfortunately they both are far more deadly in groups due to the low chance that one can keep the enemy paralyzed for their next turn Also one thing to point out and of course I believe the Allosaurus would use it’s pounce on round one because why wouldn’t it use it’s features right? The Bite actually does just slightly more damage than the Claw and Pounce that being said it’s so minor that it wouldn’t change the outcome in the math at least but of course eating a opportunity attack definitely isn’t worth using the feature especially when it deals less damage Allosaurus: +6 to hit vs 13 AC 70% chance to hit Will use pounce on first round Ghast has 45% chance to fail Strength save Round 1 Claw (8.5x0.70)=5.95 Critical (4.5x0.05)=0.22 Chance of hitting with Claw and Ghast failing save is 31.5% Attack will be with advantage due to prone 91% chance to hit with advantage Bite with advantage (15x0.91)=13.65 With chance of pounce (13.65x0.315)=4.29 Critical (11x0.0975)=1.07 With chance of pounce (1.07x0.315)=0.33 Round one DPR=10.79 Round 2+ Allosaurus will use bite Bite (15x0.70)=10.5 Critical (11x0.05)=0.55 Round 2+ DPR=11.05 Four rounds to kill Ghast: +5 to hit vs 13 AC 65% chance to hit Claws (10x0.65)=6.5 Critical (7x0.05)=0.35 25% chance of Allosaurus failing save Probability of following saves Allosaurus would need to fail two saves back to back to be hit with auto crit 6% chance of happening Will have advantage on paralyzed target Auto crit round 2+ (17x0.87)=14.79 (14.79x0.06)=0.88 Round 1 DPR=6.85 Round 2+ DPR= 7.73 Seven rounds to kill
Both are excellent monster, though I do need to find an excuse to run more dinosaurs! The pounce is a fun ability mostly because it potentially doubles up the combat capabilities, allowing for an extra attack, and one big one at advantage!
