6:23 The grappled condition doesn't affect attack rolls at all. (Except in special cases like the mimic's Grappler ability.) * A grappled creature’s speed becomes 0, and it can’t benefit from any bonus to its speed. * The condition ends if the grappler is incapacitated (see the condition). * The condition also ends if an effect removes the grappled creature from the reach of the grappler or grappling effect, such as when a creature is hurled away by the thunderwave spell.
I think they are the old (Legacy) rules. New rules include a new point: Attacks affected: You have disadvantage on attack rolls against targets other than the grappler. Weirdly though, they took out the part about thunderwave etc. removing the condition, although I’d still it’s assumed it does.
In the 2014 rules you are correct I believe he’s using the updated rules on Grappling I had to check my 2024 PHB as well to double check but they have made it to where you have disadvantage on rolls against other creatures which is awesome! Grappling and Tanking have been improved!!!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG They removed that part about Thunderwave but filled in that gap in the new rules in the Grappling rules themselves by saying The condition also ends if the distance between the Grappler and the Grappled target exceeds the grapples range
An absolute SlugFest just like I thought I knew it would be a close fight!!! This is a close matchup with a ton of variables it could’ve gone either way The Web is definitely a powerful ability but the poison effect could and would’ve been huge as well I hate to see it though because for me Mimics are one of my favorite Monsters to use in D&D but I did vote in the Poll against the Mimic but a part of me was hoping for a win even though I knew the odds were stacked against them Mimic: Bite +5 to hit vs 13 AC 65% chance to hit 88% chance with advantage First round Ettercap will use Web with a 65% chance of restraining Mimic If Mimic uses action they have 65% chance of beating DC 11 Strength check Mimic could also Bite and destroy Web with a 80% chance of hitting and a 87.5% chance of destroying in one hit For the sake of keeping consistency with the Mimic’s actions in the fight they will not attempt to break free or attack the Web in calculations even though tactically attacking the Web until destroyed and then attacking Ettercap Is the best option Attacking with Advantage and Disadvantage which cancel out (12x0.65)=7.8 Critical (8x0.05)=0.4 Total DPR=8.2 Six rounds to kill Ettercap: Web/Bite/Claws +4 to hit vs 12 AC 65% chance to hit 88% with advantage First round Ettercap will use Web and it will be assumed that it hits on round one this makes far less assumptions in the math Including the chance to Poison on each round which is not relevant due to the Restrained condition Attacking with advantage Bite & Claws (18x0.88)=15.84 Critical (14x0.0975)=1.36 Total DPR=17.2 Four rounds to kill
It was another good one, I’m liking these well matched conflicts! So many variables for the math though 😂 I opted not to get the mimic rolling to escape as I was playing it with its low base intelligence. Once those jaws were locked onto the Ettercap, primal instinct to devour took over!
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG Yeah it’s a reasonable thing for the Mimic to do on its turn and on round one you would’ve missed the attack roll against the Web so it wouldn’t of changed anything

Ah, that’s good. I’m glad it’s been properly addressed in the book.
@@DungeonBoy-TTRPG Oh you're using the 2024 rules? Got it, didn't know that.

Mimic:
Bite +5 to hit vs 13 AC
65% chance to hit
88% chance with advantage
First round Ettercap will use Web with a 65% chance of restraining Mimic
If Mimic uses action they have 65% chance of beating DC 11 Strength check
Mimic could also Bite and destroy Web with a 80% chance of hitting and a
87.5% chance of destroying in one hit
For the sake of keeping consistency with the Mimic’s actions in the fight they will not attempt to break free or attack the Web in calculations even though tactically attacking the Web until destroyed and then attacking Ettercap
Is the best option
Attacking with Advantage and Disadvantage which cancel out
(12x0.65)=7.8
Critical (8x0.05)=0.4
Total DPR=8.2
Six rounds to kill
Ettercap:
Web/Bite/Claws +4 to hit vs 12 AC
65% chance to hit
88% with advantage
First round Ettercap will use Web and it will be assumed that it hits on round one this makes far less assumptions in the math
Including the chance to Poison on each round which is not relevant due to the Restrained condition
Attacking with advantage
Bite & Claws (18x0.88)=15.84
Critical (14x0.0975)=1.36
Total DPR=17.2
Four rounds to kill

Great battle. It lasted longer than I though it would.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Yeah, I wasn't sure how it was going to go...
A couple of abilities cancelling each other out made it more even for sure!
The SPINE DEVIL IS COMING!!!! LESSGOOOOO 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
*Infernal chanting intensifies*
did...did you roll a d10 at 12:27 ... not that it matters at that point
Ah, so I did. Oops! The actual d8 that got rolled was more than enough to end things by itself… good spot though 😅
