Worth remembering that CR2 means a medium solo monster challenge for a normal sized party of 2nd level characters. The Druid "monster" statblock says it is a 4th level caster. Punching this into an encounter calculator, one 4th level PC going 1v1 against a CR 2 monster is rated as a Deadly encounter. That makes sense. That is essential balance. If a creature fights something roughly equivalent in strength, both combatants have roughly a 50% chance of surviving. That is what balanced combat means. This is why DMs are encouraged to run several smaller, easier encounters throughout an adventuring day so each battle is weighted in players' favor and the game becomes less one of these grueling death battles and more a resource management game, where each victory eats away at the party's resource pool through attrition. Because when the combat is perfectly balanced, a single nat 20 has enormous weight to swing the combat one way or the other.
Holy freaking mackerel. That was a blink and you miss it fight man! I'm looking forward to in the quarterfinals potentially seeing the animated armor taking this guy on seeing if AC or speed wins in the end for that match. Since I think the nothic is going DOWN!
Yeah, that first attack roll just sparked absolute chaos! The spined devil is a huge pain due to it flight, but, if a creature can weather those tail spines and force it into range, it could start making use of held actions to get the job done. Animated armor has the defence for it, so we’ll have to see what happens!
I knew it would be a nearly perfect victory but didn’t expect the FTK This fight really is just a terrible matchup I still feel so bad for them they aren’t well suited for 1v1 battle to begin with spellcaster type monsters generally are successful when there’s mobs to hide behind I calculated everything in the Druids favor just to see the potential victory and even with them doing everything right they would have only had a 4% chance of the Spined Devil failing it’s save and strength checks so a real pipe dream and in reality the Spined Devil could of attacked with Disadvantage to break the Druids Concentration so in reality it is even lower 😅 Druid: If Druid loses initiative they cannot deliver any damage to Spined Devil and will be default killed If Druid wins initiative they will cast Entangle and attempt to hit with Shillelagh on followup turns (Shillelagh +4 to hit vs 13 AC) 60% chance to hit 84% chance with advantage Spined Devil has a 70% chance to make a DC 12 Strength Save die to Magic Resistance as well as a 45% chance on following turns to break free with a Strength Check For these calculations I will assume the Spined Devil fails save and all attempts to break free to see best case scenario Round 1 cast Entangle Round 2+ attack with advantage with Shillelagh (6.5x0.84)=5.46 Critical (4.5x0.0975)=0.43 Total DPR=5.89 Five rounds to kill due to first round being used to cast Entangle Spined Devil: Spined Devil will fly out of Druids reach and within 20ft to attack with Tail Spines With nothing better to do Druid would most likely cast Barkskin in order to take less damage Tail Spine + 4 to hit vs 11 AC/ 16 AC 70% chance to hit 45% chance to hit on round 2+ Round 1 (16x0.70)=11.2 Critical (12x0.05)=0.6 Round 2+ (16x0.45)=7.2 Total DPR over 3 rounds=9.13 Three rounds to kill
Yup, not very much you can do when you’re hit with that 1-round KO. The plan was for the Druid to drop barkskin (or entangle if it went first), following this up with shillelagh and produce flame (before realising the immunity), and then holding actions to beat on the devil if it got into melee range. The Druid had the odds stacked against here, no doubt.
Can you imagine if that was a player's druid?
And you're the GM...
That’s what I was thinking immediately after running the fight…
Hopefully someone else in the party came prepared with some healing!

Spine devil really turned the druid into swizz cheese. He really roasted him alive.
Cremated at instant speed.
My BOY ! Do your thing Devil Kun
Gah Damn, he was mad
It was on serious business, that’s for sure 😈
The nothic and the animated armor in the outro look like they’re holding hands. :)
Haha, I thought that too 😂
The most friendly pre-fight stare down yet.

my boy Spinagon chose violence, and it was a marvelous decision
Doesn’t do things by halves this guy… well, beside maybe tearing other things into them!
woahh! The Druid went puff
🧝😈🔥💥💀

I calculated everything in the Druids favor just to see the potential victory and even with them doing everything right they would have only had a 4% chance of the Spined Devil failing it’s save and strength checks so a real pipe dream and in reality the Spined Devil could of attacked with Disadvantage to break the Druids Concentration so in reality it is even lower 😅
Druid:
If Druid loses initiative they cannot deliver any damage to Spined Devil and will be default killed
If Druid wins initiative they will cast Entangle and attempt to hit with Shillelagh on followup turns
(Shillelagh +4 to hit vs 13 AC)
60% chance to hit
84% chance with advantage
Spined Devil has a 70% chance to make a DC 12 Strength Save die to Magic Resistance as well as a 45% chance on following turns to break free with a Strength Check
For these calculations I will assume the Spined Devil fails save and all attempts to break free to see best case scenario
Round 1 cast Entangle
Round 2+ attack with advantage with Shillelagh
(6.5x0.84)=5.46
Critical (4.5x0.0975)=0.43
Total DPR=5.89
Five rounds to kill due to first round being used to cast Entangle
Spined Devil:
Spined Devil will fly out of Druids reach and within 20ft to attack with Tail Spines
With nothing better to do Druid would most likely cast Barkskin in order to take less damage
Tail Spine + 4 to hit vs 11 AC/ 16 AC
70% chance to hit
45% chance to hit on round 2+
Round 1 (16x0.70)=11.2
Critical (12x0.05)=0.6
Round 2+ (16x0.45)=7.2
Total DPR over 3 rounds=9.13
Three rounds to kill
