    Hi Jim! Im a big fan from Quebec. This show is one of my favorite. Do you think its possible to send me the transciption of the snare break? It will be very nice. Its just for my own pleasure.

    I appreciate the inclusion of the entire percussion score. I never had formal music education and was thrown on cymbals my freshman year of high school back in the early 90s. It took a long time to realize there was more to appreciate than just the battery percussion.

    Hey Jim! Any chance that you'll ever take the great percussion books you've written over the years and package them up (PDFs with recordings) so that all of us flam drag fighter pilots desperately trying to avoid coming down with 'old man hands' can have something to play along to? 😉 Beyond the benefits of shedding your work, it'd also be great for those of us who are interested in battery/FE composition to be able to see how you layer, phrase, groove, and texturize your scores, as you are truly a master at this craft. It'd be great to have some insights from you; maybe even track options that have an introduction (where you tell us what inspired/influenced your writing & approach for each score and what you remember from that season), and then a "judge's tape" track where you talk over the top of the beats with specific notes about what you did or what inspired a certain section? (Kind of an updated version of this: ua-cam.com/video/xpGuc4bI4Es/v-deo.html)? I don't know - just spitballing here. I would *gladly* pay $100 (or more!) for something like that! I can't be the only one who wants something like this, right?

      I second this, writing for FE and battery is incredibly hard, and there are virtually no resources out there for writing for this very specific and more or less kind of niche topic. Score study is an incredibly powerful tool for learning music composition and your writing is top notch. I would also pay the big buck for any FE + battery score of any of your amazing shows :)

    whats with the two bass lines?

    • @jimcasella
      @jimcasella Рік тому

      We started the show with the bassline split into different pods playing in counterpoint. So I think that was my way of writing the two differentiated parts into the score. That was a long time ago. Today, I probably would have just chosen a 2-voice approach with opposing stem directions, though that might make stickings tricky if they were needed.

    @7:20 SCV PLATES: Boy were they 5X as complex as any jazz set drummer ever was on the cymbals. Whether bass, tenors, snares or marching timpani... Every single battery player through out time would want to march on a cymbal line like that, stomach pain & all. I remember packing up the drums at our truck one night after a performance at BYU. SCV PLATES announced themselves well before getting to me so I got to see them burnin' (marchin as unit) down a hall of the parking lot straight at me. They almost ran over me & though I was a little pissed, they were so intense & majestic that I was really in awe. After that, the plate section leader came over to me & said sorry. I was like, "Dude you're all good... that... was... A W E S O M E !" I always wanted to be on a unit that is so intense & involved & necessarily bad azz that they were above anything else happening around them for 10 miles. That's just me, "Jones'n even if I never played with SCV."

    If I remember correctly from watching the stick heights from the lots or back or side of the field, the beginning of the snares' long buzz roll started at 1 & 1/2 inches or lower... pp or ppp?

    1999 was the only year I was able to do drum corps; I was with the Seattle Cascades, and we spent most of our tour shadowing SCV all over the country. Hearing this show every night - and how it developed week after week - all the way to Finals was one of the greatest joys of my life. This book is incredible, that year's corps was amazing and versatile and resilient (dealing with the loss of Art, and Ray's recovery, right before the tour kicked off)...you guys amazed me in how you carried yourselves and set the standard. This show is one of the best shows that's ever been put on 100 yards of grass...and I can't thank you enough for your contribution to my life's soundtrack, Jim.
