Using flanking in RPGs... or with steak
Flanking maneuvers are common in warfare, but less common in RPGs. But they can provide good tactical advantages for you as a player. They can also backfire on you or be utilized by the enemies. How can we use flanking in our games? Also, be aware that there is an extensive digression into flank steak.

    modding is great when it fixes mistakes never fixed by the original devs. especially Kotor has a ton a fixes and restored content. Playing games as intended on release is great if the product you got was actually finished, and sadly we just dont have that happen enough in the industry

    I finished kotor 2 moded few weeks ago but only with the restored content and what you said is true, I am now wondering how the game looked like without it and now there is no reason for me to replay it, with just less staff in it.. I really liked the game though, grey early and Dark Side mid and late game was really interesting to me it had force psychology done really well I spent long minutes for some choices and wanted to comeback to see other reactions to other responses. Thank you for the video, I will use it for my moded Kotor 1 playthrough!

    LET'S HEAR IT FOR COMMAND AND CONQUER MODDING!! <3 That was my intro into modding and going further into Tiberian Sun and Red Alert 2, excellent games to get into modding for - not just installing and playing them but also making them. If you haven't done so, you really should go play the Mental Omega modification for Yuri's Revenge. It might as well be a whole new RA2.5 with a bunch of advanced features. As for modding broadly, I do find it's a great way to breath life into games you've already experienced a great deal of. There's also a sort of "is this a good game to speedrun?" element to it where some games are more suited to modding than others, with more sandbox-style games generally being better suited to it. You mentioned Bethesda games but also games like Rimworld and Minecraft have very lively modding communities. Difficulty of modding and overall popularity play a role in that but that doesn't tell the whole story. I've found that the more games I try mods with, the more I've gotten a sense for when a game has room for mods and when less is more.

    Yeah, the wild attempts to classify video games bother me. Marketers seem pretty free in the terms they use, and we tend to just go with it. Terms like "RPG" mean very little and related mechanics appear everywhere. I think the industry could do with some standards in that regard.

    It's the classic "poor table communication" problem. The players think they're playing a game about building characters, the GM thinks he's playing a game to tell a specific story. The GM needs to communicate intentions and adjust to taste. If you do that appropriately, anything can work. I think it would be fun to allow characters to die and turn into various types of Undead. Maybe the quest is to cure it, or to learn to survive in that form. Etc. I remember a campaign called Ghostwalk that I never ran for 3.5 that looked cool in this regard.

    A group of vengeance paladins with war domain clerics come by to hunt a group of demons that are causing chaos in the region. They talk to the one player and turn the party back with greater restoration because they can help them with the hunt. • @xenathcytrin202
    @xenathcytrin202 17 днів тому

    Wave the save vs death of course, the deal was alive and unharmed, so them dying to it makes no sense. I think what i would do is work with the remaining player between sessions to figiure out what they are doing. Minimal rules or anything, just lay out the broad strokes of what they do and the adventure, or adventures, they go on to restore their freinds. Thwn, next session starts with a time skip, the party was frozen for weeks, month, maybe years, and they are restored by the now grizled partymember that wasnt, who has finally restored them through great effort. The party member might have a couple levels to show for all that they went through, maybe a scar or two. This would also be a great place for a new pc to come in as someone that the lone party member met and teamed up with.

    • @xenathcytrin202
      @xenathcytrin202 17 днів тому

      If working out how to reverse the stone transformationItakes longer than between sessions, start the next session by saying it was retconned, and that the demon vanished immediately after the wish was made. Then they go back to town and everyone is very happy to see them, they might start another quest and everything keeps going very well. Wherever they go everything goes how they want it to, and everyone is very happy. Quests become more and more simple and easy but the rewards keep getting greater and greater. The king asks them to find his crown, which is hidden behind his throne, and for this great feat of heroics they all are made kings themselves! Also the pc who made the wish is acting strangely, too nice and without any former issues, and very much a pushover. (Obviously talk it over with the player) Over time the party should realize thay something is very wrong, and that things are far too good. They may try to tear things apart, look for the edges of the fake reality. In reality, the people turned to stone were still alive and concious, trapped inside a shared dream where they were meant to be ever placated and pampered. And of course same as before where the last remaining player ventures out to break their party free of the curse.

  • @TiagoHackbarth
    @TiagoHackbarth 17 днів тому

    The wish was for them to be "alive and unharmed" so I'd waive the save vs death. I'll would ask for the survivor adventurer to tell how he would solve this, and the next session would start with him having just done that and rescuing his companions, so this way there's no play time lost with all of them unable to play.

  • @tobhomott

    3.5 and 3e are both third edition, one is just the revised third edition rules. 3.5 had a lot more books and years than before the revision, and most of the changes were small simplifications or only clarifying wording or describing the same mechanics more clearly. There's just not as much to say about pre-revision third edition.

    So part of the reason I tend to GM in tabletop games is that I like playing villains over heroes. They're a good medium for exploring subjects like fear and it's effects, and how otherwise good people are twisted to do terrible things. Heroes are just less interesting to me, but I do think that part of creating an interesting character is adding depth. Show how they could have been a villain, but didn't follow that path. Give them motivations that are easier to achieve through nefarious means. Tempt them. I think that helps.

Some people scratch their head and think “who the heck would need that?” And others think “oh my god, my life will change for the better.” I think it really doesn’t matter that mods exist or break games, it just matters if it can give people a chance to have fun or be challenged or be engaged. I like the idea of "claimed" property. Maybe the world is a ruin (post-apocalyptic), or the land is uninhabited (unsettled world). What about a post-apocalyptic downtown area where you can claim an old commercial building and maybe even run a new business out of it?

  • @DadamWrites
    @DadamWrites Місяць тому

    I've never cared for this trope - the idea of "fate" and "destiny" always feel wrong. It can be done well - see Star Wars wherein Anakin is the chosen one, but it isn't necessarily *good*. That said, I don't think I would use it in a tabletop game. If a player wanted to be "chosen" for something, I'd probably tell them about a prophecy and give them the opportunity to fulfill it, but I wouldn't force it at all. And I would limit the scope so the other players have similarly important tasks if desired.

    Shamanism is more like a fantasy Druid that a Druid actually would be. From all around the world collecting lore Shamans are responsible for: . Community leadership . Divination . Connection with spirits and the spiritual realm . Said to predict the weather and sometimes even can control it . Detection of Poisons & Disease with the ability to cure Poisons & Disease . Removal of Curses . Morphing into animals or a hybrid of man & beast . Healing, physical; mental; emotional; spiritual . The ability to bless harvests or call upon the Gods to bless a harvest . The ability to communicate with Gods . The ability to control elements as they exist in their natural state (not creating them from no where) . Communicating with nature, plants; animals, etc . Request aid from nature, usually in the form of animals . Some can even perform Curses . Shamans make a variety of items that can be beneficial to someone -- Alchemy, trinkets, fetishes, totems, talismans, luck charms, etc Honestly, I have no idea who Astrology and Plant Medicine became what we know as the Druid today. All-in-all, we should drop the Druid for the far superior, and more wide spread throughout the world in both history & lore Shaman.

    A prehistoric wizard, instead of having a spellbook, their familiar (maybe more than one?) whispers their daily spells to them as they sleep and must make alliances with spirits and arcane creatures that will cast spells for him or loan him specific abilities and powers. Sort of warlocky I know, but the idea is each spirit only gives you one spell so it's not as intense a relationship as a warlock and their patron. Hell if a GM wanted to, you could get into how the two groups split with the invention of writing.

    I kinda see two ways to go about it, and maybe two different classes or 2 halves of the progression of the shaman class. 1 way or the first half is the natural phenomena - its very clever and there's tons of interesting things in nature that we take for granted that would spook a caveman. You'd have to be more strict with materials for the spells ofc. But stuff like using kindling and flint to create fire, medicinal herbs to create healing magic and even "illusions" with smoke and echoes. This would represent the lower end of the magic in the setting or the magic that wizaard-analogues have access to. The 2nd half is the scary nasty stuff where you're calling on the power of actual gods, demons and primordials to give you power. Conan style "Magic is inherently corrupting and evil", and the rare few shamans who wield this true power are terrifying legends of the pre-historic. So this would be the 2nd half of the magic progression where a player stumbled into some dark altar or something, or a warlock-analogue where they were contacted by some outer god. Of course there's always the Dragonlance idea of having there being clerics in the setting but no "true" clerics. So the player begins as a regular shaman pulling his medicine man thing while worshiping a silent god, then once he reaches a certain level or milestone, the god lends them their aid in recognition of their fealty, giving them real miracles and cleric spells. So that's a third class or third split for the Shaman.

    You'll need a stoneage artificer to make a bow or a boomerang

    1. magic pebbles 2. conjure spark 3. summon grug Grugmancery yes please. All dice should be knucklebones. Healing is a combination of rubbing "magical" dirt and spit on a wound.

      I foresee a lot of rituals. Rituals to influence the weather. Sacrifice rituals to gain the favor of angry spirits. Sympathetic magic rituals that give "Shamanic inspiration" for the hunt. Also lots of totems and figures.
