  • Alex went off to LA and all he brought back was a giant D20. Also, his experience on the West Coast got him thinking about facets of a city that remain hidden from view, even by those who live there. What should we think about when building urban environments in RPGs?

Imagine a coast viewed from above on a map. We say something like "this coast is 1,000 miles long as measured on the map using straight lines".
But straight lines on a map aren't accurate. If we zoom in, we see nuance. We need more lines to account for bends and textures that we only see close up. The length of the coast can easily double if measured up close.
When creating a world for a game, you have to decide your level of "zoom". It's ok to use different levels for different things. Maybe the city is very, very important. A single neighborhood detailed sufficiently can handle a whole campaign. Or maybe you'd rather be a world traveler. A city amounts to a few important shops, guilds, and government buildings/NPCs.
