So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. (KJV) അവന്‍ ജലകവാടത്തിനു മുന്‍പിലുള്ള മൈതാനത്തു നിന്നുകൊണ്ട്‌ അതിരാവിലെ മുതല്‍ മധ്യാഹ്‌നംവരെ അവരുടെ മുന്‍പില്‍ അതു വായിച്ചു. ജനം ശ്രദ്‌ധാപൂര്‍വം ശ്രവിച്ചു. പ്രത്യേകം നിര്‍മി ച്ചതടികൊണ്ടുള്ള പീഠത്തിലാണ്‌ എസ്രാ നിന്നത്‌. മത്തീത്തിയാ, ഷേമാ, അനായാ, ഉറിയാ, ഹില്‍ക്കായാ, മാസെയാ എന്നിവര്‍ അവന്റെ വലത്തുവശത്തും പെദായാ, മിഷായേല്‍, മല്‍ക്കിയാ, ഹഷൂം, ഹഷ്‌ബദാന, സഖറിയാ, മെഷുല്ലാം എന്നിവര്‍ ഇടത്തുവശത്തും നിന്നിരുന്നു. ഉയര്‍ന്ന പീഠത്തില്‍ നിന്നുകൊണ്ട്‌, എല്ലാവരും കാണ്‍കെ അവന്‍ പുസ്‌തകം തുറന്നു. അവര്‍ എഴുന്നേറ്റുനിന്നു. എസ്രാ അത്യുന്നത ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവിനെ സ്‌തുതിച്ചു. ജനം കൈകള്‍ ഉയര്‍ത്തി ആമേന്‍, ആമേന്‍ എന്ന്‌ ഉദ്‌ഘോഷിക്കുകയും സാഷ്‌ടാംഗംവീണു കര്‍ത്താവിനെ ആരാധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്‌തു. യഷുവ, ബാനി, ഷെറെബിയാ,യാമിന്‍, അക്കൂബ്‌, ഷബെത്തായി, ഹോദിയാ, മാസെയാ, കെലീത്താ, അസറിയാ, യോസാബാദ്‌, ഹനാന്‍, പെലായാ എന്നീ ലേവ്യര്‍ സ്വസ്‌ഥാനങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്നുകൊണ്ടു ജനത്തെനിയമം മനസ്‌സിലാക്കാന്‍ സഹായിച്ചു. അവര്‍ ദൈവത്തിന്റെ നിയമഗ്രന്‌ഥം വ്യക്‌തമായി വായിച്ചു. ജനങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മനസ്‌സിലാകുംവിധം ആശയം വിശദീകരിച്ചു. നിയമം വായിച്ചുകേട്ടു ജനം കരഞ്ഞു. അപ്പോള്‍ ദേശാധിപനായ നെഹെമിയായും പുരോഹിതനും നിയമജ്‌ഞനായ എസ്രായും ജനത്തെ പഠിപ്പി ച്ചലേവ്യരും അവരോടു പറഞ്ഞു: നിങ്ങളുടെ ദൈവമായ കര്‍ത്താവിന്‌ ഈ ദിവസം വിശുദ്‌ധമാണ്‌. അതിനാല്‍, ദുഃഖിക്കുകയോ കരയുകയോ അരുത്‌. നെഹമിയാ 8 : 3-9.
