When Adrien was asked about next year at the last stage end interview, he said "you will know soon". Then the camera showed Rich Millener putting on a pretty sad face. I think hes going to Hyundai.

The points system was stupid but Thierry made it work to his advantage. Very well deserved maiden championship. We'll have 4 champions driving next season, dont think that has happened in a very long time!!

Yeah he learned to play the game very quickly and caught the Toyota drivers napping. Next year should be fascinating, as I think Neuville will be more relaxed, Tanak should be more settled in the team, and Rovanpera will be back. The battle should be mega.

What a nice wrap up to the season this was!
Honestly when Tänak and Ogier said, they fight for the Manufacturers title and not their own drivers title: I think both of them were lying.

Great round up. Happy to see Neuville wrap up the championship. By the way, what happened in your opinon with Pajari and mälkönen split? Seems very harsh and I feel mälkönen didn't expect it. I feel for her.

There's no "justice" in motorsports, but i think Neuville's title is well deserved for the hard championship he had and dominated, and for all that he endured chasing this title throughout his career. It's easy to say that he made many mistakes that made him lose the chance of a title in other years, but Hyundai was always too far off being the best car in the championship, and he always had to go over the limit to play catch. So I never bought that he couldn't handle the pressure. I don't think that many WRC drivers have that perseverance. Congrats Neuville!

Absolutely. He did a great job this year and has looked like a champion all season. He has always been determined and tough, so he deserved to be rewarded!

A well deserved, and long overdue World title for Thierry. Who'd have thought after his stellar IRC campaigns in the Peugeot he'd have to wait this long for the title.
He's played the points system brilliantly, and racked them up whilst not winning too many events - but you don't need to.
Tanak's crash cost him a shot at the title, and also handed the Manufacturers title to Toyota; something I don't think they deserved, with the way they've used their drivers this season. The part timers continually took points away from Elfyn, when surely they should have moved over for him. It wouldn't have taken too much for Elfyn to be in the battle for the title.....

    On closest championships:
The closest makes title race is indeed the most legendary one, 1983 Lancia beating Audi by 118 to 116 points! And what made it sop legendary too is how different the cars were, which in Rally1 is not at all given. In 1977 Fiat was ahead of Ford by 4 points. So 2024 was 2nd closest, but then again under an unfair and surely the least rewarding points system in history.
Fun fact: The the closest drivers championship was the very first one ever! The WRC started in 1973, but until 1978 it was a pure manufacturers series. 1979 was the first time there was a drivers championship and the title race was extremely exciting between Ford team mates Björn Waldegaard and Hannu Mikkola. In the first 3 rallies Björn came 2nd-2nd-2nd. Hannu soon started winning rallies, but lacked Björn's consistency. The probably most amazing bit of that season was the RAC Rally, then the penultimate round. Hannu was a bank there and duly won. Björn had so rotten luck, many punctures, broken rear axles, but he never gave up, coming 9th which earned 2 measly points. The last Rally, Bandama, Hannu won yet again. But for Björn 2nd was enough. It was Bjöen 112pts vs Hannu 111. A tie braker would have gone Hannu's way! It can't get closer than this. This miserably 9th place in the RAC made all the difference! So the first one to me was one of the best championships. (Besides it was Ford, Fiat, Lancia, Peugeot, Talbot, Renault, Opel, Vauxhall, Porsche, Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi, Triumph, Mazda, Skoda, Lada, Audi, Mercedes = slightly more than the 2.5 makes we have now?)
I think for me the 2000 drivers title was the only one to top this, but that mainly through "Schadenfreude", how all the tricks were played and the newcomer without tricks took the title. But that is a really complicated one to explain. Though if you wish I will very happily add this story.

To be honest after saturday I predicted exactly this outcome. Tänak is not known to be a team player when he sees an opportunity for himself. I predicted he will outdrive and crash.
He must have taken huge risks to be that fast having the worst road position. So in that way I can see why this happened.
You could even speculate if this was the strategy that Taka said in the stage end. To let Hyundai think they will have it easy and just let theis drivers battle it out without team orders. Should they have given team orders at Hyundai? Maybe. Would Tänak have obeyed? Propably not.

    • @Franko384
      @Franko384 Місяць тому

Yeah. No way, Tänak was unlucky. He wanted that drivers title and pushed too hard to get it. Same thing with Ogier in the last quarter of this championship.
Can't blame them too much though. If there is a chance to get the ultimate drivers trophy, you have to go for it.

I think Neuville was the driver who did the least mistakes, always looked under control. The drivers title was a bit a forgone conclusion though on that last round.
I know you like Rally2 and here in the last events we had 4 drivers in 3 different brands of cars fighting for the title.
The most gripping stuff this time was the manufacturers, but for the wrong reasons! And I am happy Toyota won. Why? They had more 1-2 results than Hyundai had just wins, they won over 50% more stages than Hyundai did. And they still could only clinch the title by 3 points with help from Tänak? This perfectly shows how stupid and unfair this points system is! Even Abiteboul said Toyota deserved it. In last years system Toyota would have been 48pts ahead, in next year's proposed system Toyota would have been 55pts ahead. Sounds more boring for the last round, but what we had this year was a system that did not at all reflect results and you could only make a difference when somebody crashes on the last day, and that is not what this sport is about. This is not how to find more manufacturer interest.

Some more observations: Mikkelsen was pulled out of Saturday to start Sunday with a fresh car. But after Tänak was out Mikkelsen still contributed 6 points to Hyundai’s manufacturer telly. This is a fantastic example why I hate this points system: You don’t actually have to compete on Saturday to get Saturday points, but you miss only one stage on Sunday and you lose your Saturday points? Where the heck does that make sense?

Next year is gonna be "resume to normal service" by the young flying Finn 🇫🇮
