How do you know if pine martens are in your woods? Look for tracks and signs! | UK Wildlife Research
I came across some pine marten scat (wild animal poo!) the other day and thought it would be a good chance to show you what zoologists look for when tracking certain animals. Omnivores are often easy because of the fruit/nuts/fur/bones you can find inside, but sometimes telling which omnivore it was can be a little tricky.

How to make DIY printable paper animal puppets for home school crafting with kids | Crafts

I created four UK animal puppets for use in educational activities, so that you can have a physical object to talk about the habitat, life style and conservation issues facing our red foxes, badgers, pine martens and Scottish wildcats. This video takes you through how to build the puppets once you've printed them off, as well as some of the topics related to each species that you could talk abo...
Day in the life of a zoology PhD during fieldwork season | UK Wildlife Research
Переглядів 12428 днів тому
I'm in the second year of my PhD as a zoologist (and apparently coming closer each year to being referred to as an ecologist). At the moment, it's fieldwork season, so I'm out collecting data on UK mammals each week. I use camera traps and feeder systems with the hopes of collecting data from animals in forest / woodland habitats, such as red squirrels and pine martens. Come along with me on a ...
Why am I researching mammal soundscapes for my PhD? | UK Wildlife Research
Переглядів 1059 місяців тому
I've just completed the first year of my PhD, where I'm doing a project researching mammal soundscapes in the UK. Essentially, I'm exploring how noise created by humans affects the behaviour of animals (mammals specifically). I wanted to let you know a bit about it, as well as challenge myself to summarise why my research actually matters to other people, beyond just being an interesting topic ...
How to build a raised wildlife pond for your concrete garden in a vegetable bed | UK Gardening
Переглядів 61111 місяців тому
My biggest garden project this year has been my pond. Most of my garden is concrete, stone slabs or gravel, so I had to get a little creative when it came to putting in a pond. Containers or raised beds are good options, and I went with a vegetable bed so that my pond could be surrounded by plants. Follow my 16 steps to enjoy a pond in your garden too. What do herring gulls and oystercatchers eat? Sea birds hunting starfish in Scotland | UK Ecosystem

Last month I visited Cromarty, a village on a shore in the Scottish highlands. Outside of the work I was doing there, I was able to take time to go wildlife spotting. Herring gulls and oystercatches are frequently seen in all UK and Irish coastal regions, but this is the fir...

Happy new year! In the last week of 2022 I got to see a red kite pair flying right above me while I was out on a walk. It's not often that I see these animals so close, and even rarer that I have anything to film them with on me when I do see them. Whereabouts are you? I’d love to see pine martens here in Wales. Is it true that they deal with grey squirrels?

    • @FeraForus
      @FeraForus 28 днів тому

The work I'm doing is in Northern Ireland right now. There are some pine martens in the north of Wales but they're few and far between. Lots of work being done to try and get them back though, so maybe one day you'll see one! It does seem to be true that they deal with greys. When pine martens come back, greys seem to disappear and reds are able to reestablish themselves (anecdotally, I'm not sure if in depth studies have been done on it). It seems as though greys are less likely to run from martens and can't escape as high in the trees due to being heavier than reds, which puts them at risks of predation rather than coexistence.

Fascinating insight into the PhD life. 🙂 A couple of quick questions: what's in the big white box above the trail camera; and are those trailcam batteries Lithium Ion rechargeables? Keep up the good work Emily and all the best with your PhD. 👍👍👍

    • @FeraForus

Thanks! The PhD keeps me busy but I'm going to try making some more time for filming videos too. The big white box is protective casing for the speaker system electronics that I've created. And yes, I use rechargeable batteries so that I'm not buying hundreds. Nice. But: Not all the parts of yew are poisonous. You can eat the arils of the fruits, which my Mum in her Dorset childhood knew as 'snotty gobs' and I've wound up participants on guided walks by eating the arils and tucking the seed in my cheek. Never, ever eat the seeds! Frankly you need to be keen to eat the arils - I guess Mum and her friends were keen as she was a kid during the War and rationing. Lots of greater stitchwort, including sitting against the bracken mentioned. In the wood where I coppice, it flowers alongside bluebell and the show is stunning. I've only ever seen native Solomon' s seal 3 times in 40 years as an ecologist, and neither was at Crab Wood - I've only been there once and it was in late autumn.
