I've gardened for the benefit of wildlife for over 30 years. Enjoy the process I've found it fascinating developing my garden as you from scratch. I have no training it's been a learning process and still is. But considering my garden's position, it is very urban, surrounded by gardens that favour paving, lawns and trampolines. It provides sanctuary and habitat for many birds, bees, butterflies and other animals seeking sanctuary in this wildlife depleted country at the moment. I am so pleased that wildlife is now being recognised as essential to all our well-being.

You must have picked up some great tips during that time! Was it all in one garden? I'm always fascinated to hear about how a single spot has changed over time, especially with the populations losses a lot of wildlife has gone through.

@@FeraForus Yes one garden. When we moved here over 30 yrs ago my neighbours were all elderly and gardeners. Sadly over the last 20yrs they've died the families that moved in dug everything up slabbed half the gardens and left half as lawn. Long narrow victorian terrace gardens. So there's just mine now. We had just an apple tree and an over grown garden 30 yrs ago and I slowly developed it over that time. I've always been fascinated by nature always a naturalist so I built my garden for wildlife and they still come considering the devastation to the gardens that surround mine. Never used a pesticide or herbicides in all the years here.

@@wildlifegardener-tracey6206 It makes me sad to see the amount of gardens that are just slabs or single grass species lawns. If I had the funds to rip up the slabs in my new garden and start fresh I would, but for now I'm making do with lots of raised beds. I'm glad that at least your wildlife has your spot to go to.

@@FeraForus I use pots all along a concrete path that runs the length of my garden. Raised beds are a great idea. Lifting just the odd slab, if it's not a rented property, is a good alternative and planting in that square slowly extending a square as you go rather than lifting it all. But yes raised beds a great alternative to removing them.

Nice video Emily. Can’t wait to see how you transform your garden into a haven for wildlife. The greenhouse will be great for growing your own veg. Hope the house renovation is still going well. Have a good week. 🙂

Thanks, I'm very much looking forward to growing my own veg. I'm about to start on some potatoes and carrots, which should be easy since I've grown them before. After that it'll be a lot of experimenting!

Thanks Graham, I'm looking forward to showing you how things change. I'm currently editing a video about installing my first ever container pond. A bit of trial and error but lots of fun, hopefully it will inspire others to give it a go.

Just a few minutes ago i left the Wildlife Gardening Froum as the moderators wouldnt let me have a discussion about broader sustainability issues along side wildlife gardening. Or about gardening philosophy in general. So i was glad to hear i`m not the only one thinking about this ballance. Glad you have a space to implement your ideas. Look forward to seeing how you get on.

I'm glad to be able to provide this space for people to express their thoughts. I don't think there's any one right way to garden, but if people are thinking about helping nature while doing it, then that's a step in the good direction. I'm pleased to report that since making this video I've had pairs of different wild birds gathering nesting materials from the wild parts of the garden, while also growing my own potato and carrot plants in my sustainability section of the garden.
