  • Homemade fat balls are a great way to pack nutrition into your garden bird feeders over the colder months of the year. Follow along with my video to make your own fat balls, or any shape of fat food. All you need is a set of dry ingredients that birds can eat (like seed, peanuts, raisins, cheese) and lard. The ingredients ratio is 1 part lard for every 2 parts of dry ingredients. In this first test, I attracted blue tits, robins, blackbirds, house sparrows and magpies to my fat balls. Which species can you attract to your garden with this recipe?

I have been feeding the birds for a long time, this is the first time I heard to use cheese! What a wonderful source of protein, thanks for the suggestion.

Lard is too soft even at low temperatures, any ideas for firming it up, maybe add some flower.

A great video. But what can one use apart from lard? I'm in South Africa and for some reason they don't sell it anymore. So I tracked down suet, melted it and ended up with a sticky mess. The birds wouldn't touch it! They love the bought ones., even though it's summer and boiling hot. But sadly the ingredients aren't on the bought ones.

Nice recipe, I wouldn’t of thought to put cheese in. I’ve made some fat balls using old yogurt pots, the birds really enjoy them, especially the blue tits. 🙂

I've seen the old yoghurt pot recipes, but since I don't eat it often it would probably take me a year to collect enough pots for a video like this! Glad to hear your birds enjoyed them too.

Are all birds lactose tolerant and able to eat cheese?

Cheese is low in lactose but to be on the safe side I'd make sure to only use mild hard cheese in this recipe
