We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52.
We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google Translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speed test, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water.
Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our UA-cam vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us.

✅ About Sailing AWEN.
Holly and Stephane are formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area but have a home in Tahoe. Our 'someday' plan was to sell our belongings, buy a boat, and, with reckless abandon, sail away to visit distant lands, which we did starting in 2020.
You can follow our transition and journey in our candid podcast, Covert Castaway, wherever you listen. You can also follow every stop we’ve made with pictures and blogs and stream our podcast directly on our website.

Safe Shelter from Hurricane Beryl Part 2 (EP 81) #hurricane #beryl #sailing #lifestyle

We ran to Trinidad to find safe shelter from Hurricane Beryl which became a category 5 storm. We left Tobago for Trinidad in a rush against time, and lots of traffic leaving Grenada with the same idea as we had, to get as far south as possible out of the path of this record breaking hurricane in the Caribbean. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the islands hit and Jamaica and other islands ...

    What credentials do you have to justify that this hurricane was due to climate change? More fake virtue seeking commentary. I wonder how much increase in greenhouse gases Outremer caused to the atmosphere to create a boat for you two lovely people. Yes it is very sad that a natural occurrence caused this damage.

    There have been hurricanes in the Caribbean for more than a thousand years, I don't know how long the route of hurricanes has been known and in addition, today, there is advance warning of the formation and probable trajectory of these hurricanes and year after year it comes the same thing happening. Perhaps it would be time for yacht captains to reduce their desire for fun a little and begin to behave like true men of the sea, ignoring their responsibilities.

    The pseudo "climat change" is generated by the Kabbale... mainly american's activities ....

  • @Coleen-Love
    @Coleen-Love Місяць тому

    There is no issue with the "climate" change (whatever "climate" means). Warren Buffet owns Berkshire Hathaway insurance and has billions of dollars on the line in Florida and places like that. He has specifically stated that there are far fewer storms now than there has ever been in the last 100 years. The premiums are down. The claims are down. But the hype is up. If by "climate" you mean temp then there is no change that is relevant or material. Each year is always different than any other year. The temp is changing and has been changing - sometimes up and sometimes down -for the entire fossil record. We have had massive ice ages followed by massive thaw periods for the last 2 billion years. So relax. The 1900s saw a mini ice age due to unusual volcano activity in SE Asia. This made the Earth colder than usual. That volcanic ash has finally fallen and we are ever so slightly warmer and this is a good thing. The entire discussion is nonsense leftism. Just breathe. The weather is excellent. The temp is excellent. The Earth has never been better.

    La houle cyclonique peut monter jusqu’à plus de 2m. Et elle prend de l’ampleur en approchant les hauts fonds près des terres. Je préfère mouiller plus exposé au vent dans 5, voire 10m d’eau. Moins de houle, moins de risque. Mais plus de chaîne. 😕

    The customs are charging you incase something happens to you and they have to come looking for you. If you are safe, they transfer the info to Trinidad who will keep an eye on you to make sure you are safe. That rumour is fake about callaloo, who told you that was telling you stupidness. Callaloo is an indigenous dish that was adopted first by the Garfuna ( half carib, half africa) ,after awhile everyone got into it.

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN Місяць тому

      Thanks for the clarification about the Callaloo, we heard it from one of the fisherman on the beach 🤣 so… We definitely see the intent on keeping sailors safe. It makes a ton of sense Troy at customs was AMAZING, one of the best experiences we had, even though the process is different. We don’t mind the cost, it’s more the challenge of doubling back to check out. When you are moving your home based on which way the wind is blowing it’s hard to go halfway down the island and come all the way back and then double back to the new destination. It can introduce risk and take more time than some people are willing to invest because it’s about the weather window. We chose to just stay in Charlotteville and explore the island with Junior rather than take the boat from bay to bay and then come back, so that was a good workaround for us. We adored Tobago and hope to come back! 🇹🇹 The Coast Guard here in Trinidad along with Immigration and Customs have all been spectacular. You definitely feel like they are keeping an eye out for you and they did all this with hundreds of boats coming in from Grenada. It was amazing to see everyone rally to get all the cruisers checked in and looking after people spread across all the bays in the surrounding areas. It was a heroic effort by so many people and Jesse James deserves a medal for keeping great coordination and communication going. We love this country! 💕

    AWEN will not hobbyhorse around the half-length, it will depend on the weight distribution. Chances are the longitudinal centre of buoyancy will be further aft , so the bow will hobbyhorse much more than the stern, methinks.

    What about the height of the storm surge, if any? Did you account for this in your water depth calculations?

    From the moment I discovered your journey with the purchase and delivery of AWEN, my heart has been captivated by your sailing channel. You have become one of my go to channels in the vast world of sailing. Your dedication to sharing your experiences through the Covert Castaway podcast has left an indelible mark on me. The way you communicate, the depth of your thoughts, and the insights you offer are inspiring. The All Together series, in particular, left me in awe of your unwavering commitment. To document every day of an Atlantic crossing is no small feat. The countless hours of videoing, editing, and sheer determination required are truly remarkable. But it is the attention to detail, the training sessions, and the heartfelt discussions among the crew that set your series apart. Holly's vivid descriptions of every aspect of the journey, from the weather to the sunrise, brought the viewers onto the boat with you. And the discussions between the Chief Safety Officer, Captain, and Skipper were a joy to witness, as they offered different perspectives and valuable insights. I am in awe of your generosity. The fact that you have chosen not to monetize your UA-cam channel or podcast is a true testament. Your willingness to let people ride along on your adventure is both amazing and refreshing. It is rare to find someone who shares their experiences so wholeheartedly for the sheer love of it. I must commend you on your exceptional website as well. It surpasses many commercial sailing websites with its wealth of resources, its organization, and its effective communication. Your Cost Calculator is a brilliant tool that allows dreamers like myself to envision the possibilities. There is no doubt that your designs of video post, podcast and website involved top-notch people with backgrounds in communication and software engineering. I cannot express enough gratitude for the inspiration you have provided me and countless others. The dedication, generosity, and exceptional quality of your work are truly outstanding. May your adventurous spirit continue to guide you on your journeys, and may your light continue to inspire others to follow their dreams. Admiration, from an armchair Admiral.

      I can’t tell you how much we appreciate your generous comments. They are humbling. So many people inspired us and we are doing what we can to do the same. Every major life change or transformation begins with a tiny idea tickling both your heart and your head that evolves to an obsession and then into a plan. Whether it’s to make a difficult choice, pursue a passion or overcome a major obstacle, none of it happens without a picture of what awaits you on the other side. What we aim to do is give people that picture, the good and the bad. It’s definitely been hard work, many sacrifices, a ton of surprises and most importantly, discovering what we are truly made of. We both wanted to understand more about ourselves and together as a team, where our limits are and AWEN is the perfect teacher and muse; honest, demanding, and expensive! We keep our little content operation simple, it’s just me (Holly) in the video content production side. I try to edit the videos in one sitting, which is typically about 6 hours and which such little time, everything has to remain raw and unfiltered. It just is what it is. The videos for the All Together daily passage series I only had 2 hours because they were daily and editing took up my rest time when I wasn’t on watch. I cut the shorts and we both do social posts. Stephane migrated our website to Notion and we are looking forward to a little break to populate more blogs and resources on our website in the off season. We have a ton of content and drafts on hand for that. The Cost Calculator I did with a free tool based off a spreadsheet so there was no coding or anything. It may go away because they want to start charging me for it but I’m still negotiating with them about it. It’s fun to think it all started with the little anonymous podcast, Covert Castaway. I was so nervous recording the first season but so glad I did! Everyone needs and outlet for their madness 🤣 Thank you so much for joining our journey and posts like yours make the time and effort to do things like this worth it. So many inspired us and we just want to give back. 🙏🤗 -H
