Safe Shelter from Hurricane Beryl Part 2 (EP 81)

  • We ran to Trinidad to find safe shelter from Hurricane Beryl which became a category 5 storm. We left Tobago for Trinidad in a rush against time, and lots of traffic leaving Grenada with the same idea as we had, to get as far south as possible out of the path of this record breaking hurricane in the Caribbean.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the islands hit and Jamaica and other islands still in the storm's path. 🙏🙏

We have made the transition from full-time software professionals from the SF Bay Area to liveaboard sailing explorers who always keep one eye on the weather and our hearts in a song. Our goal is to complete a circumnavigation and we recently transitioned to a performance catamaran and are madly in love with our Outremer 52.
We are working with Outremer in France (with the help of Google Translate) to launch our boat project and start our journey as sailing vagabonds. While it’s not a race or speed test, we are doing our first Bluewater crossing this year and we are excited to see AWEN stretch her legs and dance on the water.
Join us as we share what we’re learning living without Amazon, (but with Starlink), and attempt this new life of travel and adventure on the ocean. Please be patient with us as we continue to improve our UA-cam vlogging skills. Our goal isn’t to make our life a movie, it’s to give back to what others have shared with us.

    ✅ About Sailing AWEN.
Holly and Stephane are formerly from the San Francisco Bay Area but have a home in Tahoe. Our 'someday' plan was to sell our belongings, buy a boat, and, with reckless abandon, sail away to visit distant lands, which we did starting in 2020.
You can follow our transition and journey in our candid podcast, Covert Castaway, wherever you listen. You can also follow every stop we’ve made with pictures and blogs and stream our podcast directly on our website.

Hi! Having survived a cat4 in Grenada 20 yrs ago, I’m so pleased to see you’re safe. Couple comments on “bottoming out”.
    1. If it’s a local storm, the calls are reasonable. BUT, it’s a cat 4 hurricane less than 100 miles north to edge of hurricane. It brings a storm surge that can easily be 10-16 ft. Especially into a long bay open to the wind. Remember the surge is caused by the 150 kts winds, not the local 20 kts. Where does the surge go/come from? Water is drawn DOWN, easily 50% of the surge height *after* the hurricane passes the longitude of your current position. I would’ve been nervous with 1.5m clearance even at low-low tide, with the possible withdrawal of the water pulled behind the hurricane. Wouldn’t worry about a tropical storm unless unusual fetch in a narrow bay.
Love, love LOVE your videos! Thanks for sharing the different perspectives on the same boat. Just like if there’s 2 boats sailing in same direction, there’s always a race, if there’s more than one person on the boat, there’s a difference of opinion! LOL

From the moment I discovered your journey with the purchase and delivery of AWEN, my heart has been captivated by your sailing channel. You have become one of my go to channels in the vast world of sailing. Your dedication to sharing your experiences through the Covert Castaway podcast has left an indelible mark on me. The way you communicate, the depth of your thoughts, and the insights you offer are inspiring.
The All Together series, in particular, left me in awe of your unwavering commitment. To document every day of an Atlantic crossing is no small feat. The countless hours of videoing, editing, and sheer determination required are truly remarkable. But it is the attention to detail, the training sessions, and the heartfelt discussions among the crew that set your series apart. Holly's vivid descriptions of every aspect of the journey, from the weather to the sunrise, brought the viewers onto the boat with you. And the discussions between the Chief Safety Officer, Captain, and Skipper were a joy to witness, as they offered different perspectives and valuable insights.
I am in awe of your generosity. The fact that you have chosen not to monetize your UA-cam channel or podcast is a true testament. Your willingness to let people ride along on your adventure is both amazing and refreshing. It is rare to find someone who shares their experiences so wholeheartedly for the sheer love of it.
I must commend you on your exceptional website as well. It surpasses many commercial sailing websites with its wealth of resources, its organization, and its effective communication. Your Cost Calculator is a brilliant tool that allows dreamers like myself to envision the possibilities. There is no doubt that your designs of video post, podcast and website involved top-notch people with backgrounds in communication and software engineering.
I cannot express enough gratitude for the inspiration you have provided me and countless others. The dedication, generosity, and exceptional quality of your work are truly outstanding. May your adventurous spirit continue to guide you on your journeys, and may your light continue to inspire others to follow their dreams.
    Admiration, from an armchair Admiral.

I can’t tell you how much we appreciate your generous comments. They are humbling. So many people inspired us and we are doing what we can to do the same.
Every major life change or transformation begins with a tiny idea tickling both your heart and your head that evolves to an obsession and then into a plan.
Whether it’s to make a difficult choice, pursue a passion or overcome a major obstacle, none of it happens without a picture of what awaits you on the other side. What we aim to do is give people that picture, the good and the bad.
It’s definitely been hard work, many sacrifices, a ton of surprises and most importantly, discovering what we are truly made of. We both wanted to understand more about ourselves and together as a team, where our limits are and AWEN is the perfect teacher and muse; honest, demanding, and expensive!
We keep our little content operation simple, it’s just me (Holly) in the video content production side. I try to edit the videos in one sitting, which is typically about 6 hours and which such little time, everything has to remain raw and unfiltered. It just is what it is. The videos for the All Together daily passage series I only had 2 hours because they were daily and editing took up my rest time when I wasn’t on watch. I cut the shorts and we both do social posts. Stephane migrated our website to Notion and we are looking forward to a little break to populate more blogs and resources on our website in the off season. We have a ton of content and drafts on hand for that. The Cost Calculator I did with a free tool based off a spreadsheet so there was no coding or anything. It may go away because they want to start charging me for it but I’m still negotiating with them about it.
It’s fun to think it all started with the little anonymous podcast, Covert Castaway. I was so nervous recording the first season but so glad I did! Everyone needs and outlet for their madness 🤣
Thank you so much for joining our journey and posts like yours make the time and effort to do things like this worth it. So many inspired us and we just want to give back. 🙏🤗

Glad that Beryl didn't throw a K.O. punch at you. Happy Birthday to Holly! Al the best with the haulout and the warranty work.
I saw a video of 'The Adventure Crews' who successfully weathered Beryl in a hurricane hole in Grenada (damage: one bent stanchion). Because they were surrounded by hills in a narrow inlet, the wind was dampened significantly.
As for the 'safe' anchoring depth. If the waves' height was 3 meters (they seemed to be less than that), that means 3 meters from the through to the crest but only 1½ meter above the mean sea level and 1½ below. So the boat would dip 1½ meter below the mean sea level. You would still have 1½ meter of clearance under the rudder. So I'm with Stéphane on this one.

AWEN will not hobbyhorse around the half-length, it will depend on the weight distribution. Chances are the longitudinal centre of buoyancy will be further aft , so the bow will hobbyhorse much more than the stern, methinks.

My two bob's with reguards to water under the keel I prefer to be in deeper water when the weather is rough for a couple of reasons. More depth means the wave action is less, If you drag you have no room to reset, If you need to up anchor and get out of Dodge again there is less sea room, as you said when the chop inceases your rudder is closer to bottoming out and most importantly "Happy wife Happy life" Just sat yes dear and do as suggested. More sea room gives you more options and try to resist letting ego make the desision. ecause if "she is right" youll never hear the end of it🏴‍☠🔱

Rudder depth…. you need to know exactly (and that should be possible to find) how deep below the sounder the rudder and keel hang. Do you have sounder offset? The chart shows the years lowest low water. Just take your depth when positioning the anchor point and use rule of twelfths to find worst case. Halve the expected swell height…. allow for rudder offset…. add a fudge factor…. Bobs ya uncle. 😁👍🏼

This was about two people having a different take on a situation. Our philosophy on our boat is it's better to have two heads looking at something than one since we are both still learning on this boat. The fact that we have different ways to look at a problem or situation we see as an asset to our team. It's understandable on other boats the philosophy may be different, which isn't a judgement on a relationship, it's a choice about operational approaches.

you have a depth finder. watch it. He is right. having a 1.5 meter swell in short bursts(seconds between waves) with how long you boat is you will not hobby horse as much as those boats that are 3-5 meters shorter of water line will. I always suggest motor around where you are gonna anchor then look at tide levels. If you are low tide with 3 meters you are good. if you at high tide with 3 meters and it will drop 2 meters and then have 1.5 meter swells then you have an issue coming.

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  9 днів тому

Yes, we have a depth finder and knew the depth where we were, but not where worst case would be if we shifted to the dots I set in the video on the chart, based on the potential wind direction. The tide levels I also calculated, thus the concern you outlined here..

Stéphane here: far from it… This cruising season was like jumping in the deep end with over 8,000nm in less than a year in all kind of conditions in a new to us performance cat. It takes a real badass woman to do it and persevere through all the ups and downs.
Holly brings her skillset that contributes to making our cruising lifestyle a reality and she continues to learn and progress as a sailor. I am immensely proud of her.
