Stephane and Holly are absolutely right and wise in what they are doing. Most of the lives lost at sea have been due to underestimation of weather conditions. That"s statistics, not opinions. Safety is factor number one when sailing, if the sailor wants to go far...
Thumbs up therefore for this amazing couple, who is inspiring all of us with their outstanding attitude and approach.
Maybe you thought of this already: should you arrive late in Miami to position the boat in time, Outremer could arrange visits on your boat at anchor by using a motor boat. It has been done in Cannes several times by other boatbuilders. Not the best solution, but certainly better than risking sailing to a timetable with bad weather.
    Fair winds!

One thing I've noticed is how each of you have increased your confidence. It literally shows in the progression of each leg.
Wishing you all the best for the next stages as you head to your goal!

I see you made Luperon ? Great hurricane hole .
    First thing in morning ,
check OGR Fleet tracker (approaching C’Horn),
    check Awen tracker,( good speed!!)
    Check Moonshot on marine traffic,
    Check weather for all three
Look for Awen and OGR video reports coming in a couple hours ….
    Repeat!
    Cheers Warren
FYI Awen stopped showing on marine traffic

What I really enjoy hearing on this passage is your own thoughts and feelings about the situations your under and for a non sailor or someone who sails, every condition has an impact on all the team which is different..so 😎 cool.

I keep looking at the wind, gusts, waves on both the ECMWF and GFS and it looks more doable than it did a few days ago. The models are trending more in your favor. Looks like most of the bad stuff is going to go south of Cuba. With or without stopping in the D.R.

The problem with the models is that they under represent the conditions. This has been the trend we are seeing, by about 20%. Last night they said we would get 22 knots, we got 32. We are trying to balance the time pressure with risk. The last thing we want to do is break something or someone after everything we just went through. It’s a balance. 🤗

@@SailingAWEN ultimately its the wave size & frequency and peak gusts vs sustained, right? If you saw ~2.5m waves or less and a consistent 25-30knts isn't that pretty doable?
Maybe you could put into black and white numbers where your tolerance really is in an upcoming video. No Matter what, the models are better than they were a few days ago in your favor.
I know some people have experienced 40s-50s-60s in one off isolated instances and then found the perception of "30s" to be "not so bad" as a result of that experience. I know your boat has a CE A rating. CE rating isn't everything but a CE-A is 40+ knots and 13'+ waves right?. None of that is even close to the current models. Even +20%. I know you'll say Crew doesn't have a "CE rating" though.😀

Good to see you all keeping up the pace. Looks like your options are limited, so might as welll not overthink or plan and just focus on keeping up that average and sailing to the apparent? Tmg

Moving right along and a quick pit stop. Strange zig zag on the tracker probable an anomaly.
Have you spoken to the skipper on moonshot? What are their plans?
Looks like they are heading thru the Bahamas chain that might be challenging navigation in a hurry !
    Cheers Warren

Probably. Yes. Jean Marc is hunkering down in rain at the moment and a ton of chain.

First, Holly nice job on adding music to your production efforts. Stephane, your guest skipper mentioned something I have heard before about the phrase, maybe, bucking bronco or something like that. I have seen what "bucking bronco" looks like in another video. The other video claimed that heavier boats "buck" more than lighter boats. Can you comment about the weight of the boat effecting the ride of the boat? Is it only sea state or does the weight of the boat or some other factor add to the difficulty of the "ride". Thanks Rick

    • @SailingAWEN
      @SailingAWEN  8 місяців тому +2

It’s just sea state momentarily while we were motoring directly into the wind. I can tell you first hand that what this boat does I. Those conditions is nothing compared to what we experienced on our FP. The belly on this boat is higher and there’s no slamming. When the boat would slam like that on our old boat, it sounded like the boat would split in two.

I usually do music on the weekly videos but I only have two hours to edit so it’s often hard to fit it in. 🤗

From Samana to Puerto Plata they call that coast the miles of smiles, you have to go the amber museum in the city.

Quick question. After rounding the North East corner of the D. R. going through the big bay, you did a quick zigzag (did a bit of South). Why? Reefing?
True story. I have learned 8 times how to tie a bowline UNDER TENSION (very cool way to tie it!). Each time the 'learning' lasted less than 24 hours!

Hoisted the main into the wind and then hoisted the asymmetrical spinnaker afterwards

Holly, I'm an action person too. Way older though. I eventually found that jimping into Action is a way to escape just Being. Nikki had something there... little redhead guru.😊
