Fender MIJ Black Paisley Telecaster
Not really an Offbeat Instrument, but a beautiful and limited guitar from the artisans in Fender Japan. Fantastically well made, with a vintage spec and sound.

Rickenbacker 620-12
Переглядів 501Рік тому
My latest guitar. I've always wanted a 12 String and this is the body shape I like the most. Sadly a Tom Petty 660-12 is out of reach for the moment due to silly prices on Reverb, but a 620 is a good place to start for that unmistakable Rickenbacker jangle. This is a quick video, although I plan to remake all my videos at some point to create a more professional and complete set of offbeat inst...
1979 Les Paul Standard Guitar
Переглядів 159Рік тому
Just a quickie! Here's my 79 Les Paul that was my second guitar - I traded a Les Paul Studio for it. It was an on/off love affair with it until I got a decent amp emulator and fell in love again with the DiMarzio pickups. Thanks for watching!
Suhr T Guitar with Nashville style pickups
Переглядів 195Рік тому
It's time for more lousy playing and lovely guitars. Here is a Suhr Telecaster with a Nashville stylee pickup arrangement. If a Telecaster is all you need, then this takes it up a notch or two, with glorious quilted maple top and birds eye maple neck. In the meantime, I'll try to be more regular, and perhaps even revisit some of the guitars from the early days of this channel.
Cold Beans. Travis Bean guitar doesn't like British winter...
Переглядів 397Рік тому
I got my Bean out to try on my new pedalboard and found that British winters mean the neck is too stiff for light strings. They just can't bend the neck when it's cold and so the high E buzzes. A lot. Upping to 10's makes the B string OK, but the E still buzzes. Roll on springtime!
Arduino Bond Guitar - Tone is fixed, plus some effects
Переглядів 702 роки тому
In the last video I attempted to demo the tone control, but it actually wasn't working. I think I said it was "subtle" :-) Anyway, it works now, plus I have some early effects to demo as well, so here is a short video to show off my latest coding (and soldering). The thumbnail for this video is also the circuit diagram for a single pickup in case you want to try this for yourself. You may need ...
Arduino powered guitar: The Bond Electraglide lives!

First all, my apologies to Look Mum No Computer for getting his name wrong! He really is an inspiring creator and makes seriously mad and fun stuff on his channel and at his museum ua-cam.com/channels/afxR2HWJRmMfSdyZXvZMTw.html This video reflects a momentous occasion, my gutted Bond Electraglide has new digital intestines and makes sounds like a real guitar should! Of course it is massive ove...
The Bond Electraglide Guitar Lives!

A final fitting of all the parts and the guitar is ready for some programming. I already have basic volume and tone and want to explore tremelo effects, although this will require heavy optimisations, probably using fixed point maths. The cheapo pickups I used are disappointing, the neck pickup is noisy and the others are too low output, so I think I will revert to the original Bond single coil...
Bond Electraglide Update: New electronics board with Vactrols!

I have built a new board to add Vactrol based volume and tone controls for my unfinished Bond Electraglide. A previous version using digital potentiometers was a failure, although I learned a lot about Arduino programming. This version maintains really clear sound (as long as you step up the PWM frequency) and usable volume and tone controls. There are still some problems to fix, such as hum an...

Rebuilding a Bond Electraglide Guitar with Arduino electronics

You may have seen an earlier episode where I showed an original 80's Bond Electraglide and also a second guitar that I got that had no electronics in it. This is that second guitar and I am going to replace my old circuits with some that hopefully work. Come with me on a journey of exploration and bad soldering as I do a one-take ramble on the guitar and what I plan to do.
Nathan Shepperd NSG25 Guitar

UK luthier Nathan Shepperd build guitars for about 8 or 9 years in Bristol in the early 2000's. They got great reviews in guitar magazines, but Nathan wasn't able to keep the business going. He still builds for a hobby, but his guitars are few and far between. As I mention in the video I know very little about this guitar, what it is made of, when it was made and who it was made for. If anyone ...
1977 Ibanez Artist 2619 Guitar
Переглядів 3,1 тис.2 роки тому
The Ibanez Artist was a worthy alternative to the Les Paul in the 1970s. It was only made for a few years, but I demonstrated a quality, fit and finish that the big names were struggling to reach. It sported a maple top, rock maple neck and the Fabulous Flying Finger Super 80 pickups. (In the video I call it a 2618 but it has been pointed out to me that it is in fact a 2619. Thanks Leon Thompson)
Gibson Bicentennial Firebird. A genuine 1976 guitar and 1 of 222. Super clean 70's monster

Here is my Firebird that makes me feel like I am Phil Manzenera of Roxy Music. It's a real 1976 model (most were made in 1977 and 1978) and in the best colourway, in my opinion :-) The pickups are the sound of rock and if you can get past the neck heavy nature and weird feeling of reaching so far away to play open chords, then you'll love it. As always, if you like these videos, please like and...

Ignore all imitations, the PS10 is the real deal. Paul Stanley said so himself, the PS10 is the Rolls Royce to the Iceman Chevy. Here's my 1980 model, the same spec as the ones Paul played on stage. It is a beautifully put together guitar with some fancy appointments and is built to rock. Mmmmmm

Travis Bean TB1000S Guitar - Greg Lake's 1977 Works Tour guitar
I have a Travis Bean (you can see a bit of it in my profile picture). I bought it at either Steve's or Long & McQuade in Toronto Canada in 1979. I didn't care about resale value, so I cut off the rather restrictive lower horn, removed the black paint and pickguard. The tuners were relaced, and I switched the volume pots to a more Fender style (gets loud when turned all the way up).
I am not sure resale matters with these guitars, they are only known to a minority of players, so will never command huge prices. In other words, enjoy your guitar as it is how you want it to be!
I was today years old when I found out about these guitars…. One has come up on Facebook marketplace for a grand!.. no idea if that is a good price or not. Interesting guitar, unique, has potential if they include midi and emulation (like a mooer or Variax)… bummer to learn the fretboard doesn’t do boomer bends though.. I have never seen a fretboard like that.
It depends how complete it is. Quite often the power supply is dead, or the electronics has been replaced. I would ask if there are photos of it working first. Whether you should buy it or not is difficult, it won't ever be a huge collectors item or a gigging guitar, just an interesting diversion from boring guitars. I like the ambition behind it, and the great story.
Nice!
You play very mediocre guitar damn it!
Why the fuck does that guitar have "pizza" what the fuck is this shit
I had one just like it. Paid $250 in 1986 and traded it a year later for a 1964 Gretch Country Club. I miss it.
Maybe a sustain pickup
I think it is the last innovative guitar ever created that is not based solely on electronics. It is my dream guitar <3
Looks like it also had the urns truss rod gearbox behind the neck olate the 1960 Sonic had a setneck and no tuss rod.
Which guitar pedal did you use in the begining of this video clip? Sounds amazing!
It was an Effectrode Tube-Vibe, I think the best sounding replica of a uni-vibe
@@offbeatinstruments if you happen to have a link to this pedal would be highly appreciated! Blown away by the sound. I guess it’s the guitar and the pedal - comb
Hi, I'm interested in where you got the image from 6 secs in? It looks very like a guitar I own! They are great to play.
It's my guitar, the guitar I review in this video.
Will Sergeant played one too.
My cousin had one like that but the nut was unique in that it looked like the ends of strings were arranged so the strings would go through them. It looked like the nut on the picture in the beginning of this video. I don't usually see that on the ones with the single coil pickups but he had it on his. I thought that was very interesting. Such a cool guitar.
I have one of the newer Gibson-made Steinberger Spirit GT Pro Deluxe guitars in metallic blue finish, hopefully sometime in 2024 I will be able to order an MGR Series 001 replacement bridge so I can replace the stock R-Trem bridge which is still in reasonably good condition but has some issues that affect tuning stability, mainly the locking lever doesn't securely lock the bridge like it should, the bridge is still able to move slightly, and the two pivot posts slightly lean towards the bridge pickup because the metal used to make the bridge is a bit soft for the job, the slight lean towards the bridge pickup is barely noticeable though.
I'm not familiar with the newer models, but there must be after market parts for the bridge, or even original Steinberger parts that you can get a guitar tech to fit?
How does the size of this guitar compare to a Stratocaster? Is the neck much smaller?
It has a very slim 60s type neck and is slightly smaller than a Strat. My Strat is upon for sale at the moment so I can't do a direct comparison, but it is definitely a smaller, lighter guitar.
i have a 93 majic blue hardtail that my local canadian shop brought back from NAMM, been my main squeese ever since !
Gorgeous guitar, lovely sound!
Thought they were ugly as a teen but now i kinda like them and have huge respect for Ken. Don't worry about the playing man, not everyone can be Van Halen.
Hi. I work for the company that actually made the bodies for these guitars. I still have a raw body and neck that was rescued from the skip when Bond went bust.
Does it have the fretboard? You should try putting passive components on it and perhaps fit some effects in the cavity.
Unfortunately there is no fretboard. I had considered the idea of fitting a standard type but lost interest.
Amazing guitar there.
Wonder how Steve Miller felt
Plug the pizza into the headstock for highs. Feedback is then controlled by the antennae and no battery is needed!. Ill have your leg!
Great little guitar and that sound- heavenly! Too bad the new ones don't sound like this one. Cheers!
Ist es wirklich so schwer zuerst seine Gitarre zu stimmen? So klingt es einfach nur gruselig.
It is in tune, but my playing isn't.
Maybe good for some overdubbings but too sharp to play solo.
Great guitar. It's probably at the earliest, 1979. I've got a DMZ 3000 I purchased 06/79. I played it every weekend for over six months. The owner said, no one else ever played it or wanted it. He made me a sweet deal. The necks were only guaranteed for 20 years. Mine is okay, but not as good as it used to be.
Ibanez and Greco didn’t just decide to make their own shapes. They getting sued by US companies because they we’re breaking copyright laws.
The guitars were dipped in finish ,then dried with uv lights, in seconds ! Ken handed me a guitar bag and asked me what I thought was in there, I thought maybe 1 guitar, but there was 2 guitars!😊
Reminds me of the typical Dodge owner. They'll tell you, it needed a new engine, at 50k miles, but other than that it's been a great truck.

Mines a 98 classic. I bought it here in England about 6yrs back. It's in lovely condition. Definitely a keeper.
The 1973 April Wine LP "Electric Jewels" - features this beauty on the cover!
So it does! I never knew that, thanks for pointing that out 🙂
Kind of interesting, but i suspect you've taken about 800 bucks off the value of the guitar.
Not really, it was an unfinished guitar and the internals are impossible to find, so there was no way to make it original again anyway. It wasn't really saleable before and it probably isn't now, so nothing lost, nothing gained. Even fully complete originals aren't worth that much, they are too out there for most guitarists who just want their Strat/Les Paul/PRS/Tele In any case, everything I have done can be removed, and I haven't touched any of the fundamental parts that were there before.
@@offbeatinstruments interesting, i have occasionally seen parts for Electraglides for sale, including the motherboard, but only very occasionally. More often you see fretboards and pickups from them for sale. I've followed the prices for complete examples for a while (in the hope of acquiring one), at the moment, they go for around 1k if they have a working psu. Which is out of my league at the moment! How's the fretboard on yours? Iirc they develop intonation problems as the board wears
I love this one 🙂🙂🙂 Interestingly it looks like all these Japanese-made guitars made by Teisco Del Rey and other brands, I own a few of these... As a guitar player and collector I'd love to find that Burns... Plus, it would look good along with my other Burns both vintage and reissues... Fender scale length is usually 25.50" and Gibson is usually 24.75"...Great video... Very well-made... Great video...
I did have it up for sale on Reverb a while back as I was focusing more on 70's guitars, but it was only half-hearted, I wasn't really that worried about it selling. I had previously sold a 1950's Supro and the buyer immediately tried to flip it for twice the price after telling me it wasn't worth much. I guess I shouldn't be bothered about that really, it's business after all, but I wanted someone to cherish it.
You're perfectly right about that... Especially if you're selling a vintage guitar or something you really liked...
I have a Jazz Split 3 pu's for sale. Built before 1965 as per ser. Number. Very interesting history.
Any interest in my selling?
No, it's a keeper. Some day I may put it up for sale on Reverb, but not for a long time yet, I'm still enjoying it too much 🙂
I own a 2021 TB1000S and ive found that i have zero tuning issues or buzzing as long as im using 11's or thicker strings. I also found strings to be too easy to bend when using 9 or 10s. I need that tension or it feels different than my other guitars and ill over bend. To me 11s or even 12s feel like 10s on a normal guitar. Mine is a newer model (i have a few videos on youtube with it) and it has a type of paint on the neck that the older ones dont have. From what ive gathered is the older ones could have issues with the aluminum expanding and tuning goes out the window. With the 2021 model I have, i do not have these tuning issues. I have tested bringing the guitar from 30 degrees to a room at 70 degrees and as long as i let the guitar sit for 15-20mins and acclimate to the room temp, i have zero tuning issues what so ever. What material is the fretboard made from on yours ? I know some of the Kramers and some of the older Beans used a resin for fingerboard material. My newer one has a Rosewood fretboard. Also do you have any high frets ? or have any of the frets popped up a little bit ? Because the entire setup of these relies on the fret job overall. If you have frets with marks on them or frets sticking up too much etc, itll make the guitar play like crap.
Mine is a 1977 one made for Greg Lake of ELP, I know the exact date because Travis Bean signed the back. It was his tour guitar for the Works World tour. I believe it is a rosewood fingerboard andI can't see any frets that have popped up, so I am hoping it is just a temperature thing. It played great a few months ago, but it has been stored and got cold.
@@offbeatinstruments Weird. Mine as i said i just need to let it sit in the room im gonna use it in on a stand for 15mins or so and then it'll tune up and stay in tune for hours. They put a Imron paint on the new ones thats suppose to help with the neck and temperature changes. The old ones feel cold to the touch, the one i have does not. A lot of things were supposedly fixed on the new Beans and id agree with that statement. When was the last time you had the guitar in a shop ? Or do you do your own work ? Also when was the last time you put any oil on the fretboard to condition it ? A lot of these small things can have an effect on a Bean it seems. Nice guitar ya got there and hopefully theres a quick fix for ya. Im just throwing stuff out there that ive learned about Beans.
@@ctcards2636 thanks for the advice, I'll definitely try the fretboard oil as it's been sitting in a case for some time. I also think it needs a visit to a tech for a set up. I don't have the space to do my own work, but I wish I could.
@@offbeatinstruments You may just need to raise the action at the bridge saddles. If its buzzing on the high e and b strings, just raise the string height. ;-)
Wow! Great content :D! Do what the pros do = 'Promo SM' !
Can I borrow indefinitely
Sadly, no 😀
These guitars out class Gibson's in every way in my opinion, and more people should be aware of how good they really are, but why is it everyone that puts out a video showcasing these awesome guitars doesn't take the time to tune the thing properly or plug it into a decent amp? There's a good reason why these guitars are known as "Les Paul killers" and guitars of this quality should be shown to the guitar playing community at their full potential, I own several of these old beauties and none of them have tuning issues and played through a quality amp they murder an overpriced Les Paul!
Hi Darren, I don't try to hide the fact that I am not a good player, I just love these guitars and like to remind people they exist. My one does have a tuning issue, but happy to concede it's a one-off and may be due to needing some love and attention. My Les Paul has the same problem, it's always the G string. I am sure you are a better player than me, so why don't you make a video about them?
@@offbeatinstruments Sorry mate, I didn't mean to sound off like that and I certainly wasn't criticizing your playing but the tuning was a bit out, and of course I like anyone who searches these old guitars appreciates the effort that people like yourself go too, to make others aware of these fine instruments, I agree it would be well worth the expense to address the tuning problems it has and then she will be a faithful old guitar! Thanx for posting the video I really did enjoy it!
I realised there is an issue on the bridge tone that I need to fix, it isn't as strong as the other pickups (I suspect I have got the pinout wrong on the Mega). Plus all the tones and volumes affect each other when the pickups are active, just like they do in a normal guitar. I would need a summing amp to get round this, which might be a good idea for the future.
I posted some videos on my youtube here about my 2021 Travis Bean TB1000S. Guitar is ridiculous. I own a lot of guitars and this is up there with one of the best i own. That says a lot after 30 years of playing. Unique and as long as you understand the principal of heat and aluminum, you can actually play this guitar anywhere just about. I have zero of the issues that "some" people seem to have with these. If the guitar is cold, let it warm up to room temp. If your playing a cold stage, let it get use to the outdoor temp. But i dont have anymore issues with this guitar than i do with a normal guitar. Love it, unique tone and thats what you need these days to stand out, stop sounding like everyone else and find your own voice ;-) Get a Bean.
Gracias, buena info...por favor continúe con el gran material
Well done for persevering with this. Glad you got it all working. Interested to see if you decide to take it any further with the fx. 👍🏼
Thanks, I am a bit stuck for space now in the guitar, but there might be room for a DSP board of some sort in there!
Well done!
Thanks! It was quite a moment when I fixed the volume issue and suddenly it sounded like a guitar :-) That and cleaning up the RF noise and it became a usable instrument.
Vito Bratta of White Lion also used Steinbergers.
I wasn't familiar with White Lion, but he had a white Steinberger from what I can see. I need to check them out, I love a good 80's hair metal band!
@@offbeatinstruments His solos for "Wait" and "Little Fighter" are considered by many to be some of the best solos ever recorded.
I just bought a newer Travis Bean that was built in 2021 by ECG. Its a TB1000S with a pan back in black. Love the aluminum necks (I posted a few videos this week on here). There is NO other guitar like he Bean i have and i have a lot of guitars in my collection. If your chasing a Knopfler/Garcia tone, this is an amazing guitar plugged straight into a Twin. Do yourself a favor and try one of these out, Kramer or Bean. But make sure you let the guitar get acclimated to the room your gonna use it in for about 20mins. Or yes you can have tuning issues with these. But once acclimated, this guitar stays intune better than any of my others and most of my collection are pretty expensive guitars. This Bean has my favorite tone of any of them. Thanks for the video, since i got mine ive been spotting more and more videos with Kramer and Beans. Good stuff. Oh and i called my TB1000S "Mr.Bean" i mean how couldnt i have ? lol!
The king of Dangdut music Rhoma Irama also uses this guitar
Looking good. Might be worth getting a board made at one of the Chinese fab places, once it’s finalised. Then you’ll be able to get a decent ground plane. Looking good so far though.
If it was mine I think I would fit Lace Alumitone pickups.
If I get it all working then I may look at other pickups, but to be honest 3 Alumitone would cost more than I paid for the guitar!
@@offbeatinstruments suddenly I want to buy the guitar. I'll wait until you've kitted out like a NASA space probe first. 🤣 I do wonder if it can become a midi guitar and have enough power to include sequencers, loopers, and all that crazy stuff.
Nice. Just one question, does the bond use a scratch plate, or is that part of the body? Is it removable, and what is it made from? Thanks. Just wondering as if I ever saw one in a state I might want to 'Gibson SG' or 'Malcolm Young' it.
The scratch plate is actually a plastic sheet that is glued into place, like a thick protective film. I thought about removing it, but I think it would pull the paint off underneath and then I would be needing a respray. Unfortunately I managed to spill resin on it when I was creating the touch interface, so I will need to put it right at some point. Perhaps I will just mask it off and spray it matt black, although I quite like the idea of having an all white Bond. I have read about people making Bonds into normal guitars with passive controls. The pickups should be OK, or you could just replace them with a Strat set.
