    There’s a type of cleaner called Orvis. It’s horse shampoo but it’s used for delicate quilts, crewel embroidery, etc. It’s considered an archival method for cleaning textiles. The way it works is you pour some Orvis into your bathtub, then get it like 3”-4” deep in tepid/warm water and mix it up. You put a sturdy towel on the bottom of the bathtub, and the work on top of the towel. This is to support the work and prevent it from stretching out and distorting once it’s heavy and wet. You pick it up by the towel. I think you could wash your giant-yarn blanket this way.

    I’m a fairly new sewer and I don’t want to do button holes either. Boring. I was wondering to myself about a blouse I want to make, “Could I just sew a placket and buttons on the front and put it on over my head?” 🤭

    Ok, here goes 😊, black ribbing, yes; for the wool, Karina Trinidad over at LiftingPuns and Needles doesn’t do dry cleaning either, she uses her steam iron. She just posted this week how to treat your wool, she sews with wool blends all the time, check it out. Now your crochet top, wow 🤩 wonderful, beautiful. Your going to be wearing the top do no one will notice the back neckline, it’s fine 😊. I would definitely put it in a laundry bag machine wash delicate, no spin or low spin on your washer then lay it over towels in your bathroom and it will be dryer by morning. The new project, do it your way; sound logical 😅. This is funny, my 12 year old granddaughter has made 4 of those big hand crocheted blankets. Trust me, she isn’t washing anything by hand, she just throws it in the washer on delicate like I said cold water and dry on low. You’re funny, yours are different for some reason. I don’t normally watch others but there is something about you that keeps me watching 😂😂😂😂 so best advice, you do you

    Hi...I enjoy your chatty videos. I finished a 100% cotton jumper during lockdown that I started in the 90s.....! Since I've started wearing it and washing it (by hand) it has got bigger and bigger...🤔 Not a problem for the 'sloppy Joe' style but I've had to put rows of 'Knitting-in elastic' in the cuffs and waist band to keep those bits fitting. I don't know if this is usual for cotton stuff....🤔 By the way I'd use black rib...the slight mismatch of the grey would drive me nuts....have fun ❤

    Great vlog. Thinking washing a swatch of fabric is a good idea and ❤ your white jumper also I do not crochet but I do wash my granddaughters hand knits in one of those net bags on a quick 15min 20 degree 600 spin wash and they come out like new every time. Could you maybe wash the very large yarn balls in a pillowcase so they don't get tangled and well done on your blind because yeah maths😮 and I love the chatty vlogs thanks for taking the time to share.

    I don’t understand this pattern. I made a size 12 (5’6”, 145#). I couldn’t even move my arm when the sleeve was sewn in. The seam was a good 2 inches above my shoulder. I don’t know how to alter anything that much. I wanted to love it.

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 8 днів тому

      I don’t know if you are aware but there are two versions of this pattern. Is it possible you were working from the old one? I had the original but I tried to make it from a slippery polyester very early in my sewing career and it was a total disaster! I scrapped it without ever knowing if it was me, the fabric, or the pattern. Megan then re-released it a good while later and I got the updated version, made it, and loved it. But I do believe the original version was reported to have fit issues. Might be worth checking your copy. Otherwise I don’t know what might be going on, such a shame though because I know how it feels when you want to love a pattern but then you make it up and it’s a disappointment (and a waste of fabric!) 😣

    Hi Hayley, I love how the top you're wearing turned out. I've never made anything out of French terry but I'm tempted to make my next jersey dress in that fabric. I thought I'd give you an idea regarding the scraps of yarn. It's a scrappy crochet blanket which I'm linking below (I hope the link works): ua-cam.com/video/zx6IsKfKVho/v-deo.htmlsi=68Us3pISopZM0t-m

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 8 днів тому

      Thank you so much, it was my first time working with French Terry but I am really loving it to wear, especially the thickness which often seems to be an issue for me with light coloured stretch fabrics. Thanks so much for the blanket link (it did work ☺️) - that is ideal! Because you don't need a set amount I can just use up what I've got, perfect!

      I really think there's no other way with bras than to have a go and see where you end up size-wise. There are just so many variables in terms of where the inches fall, if you know what I mean. Good luck with finding your size! One of my favourite parts about sewing is being able to leave labels out! I've even thought about whether I could put the hook and eyes on bras on the front or size as they often bother me against my spine 😣

    • @moiraberniegatt9491
      @moiraberniegatt9491 8 днів тому

      @ thanks for responding. I absolutely hear you. I have never seen anyone say what thread they sew with and I don’t want THE ITCH! Wall mine are polyester. Is that what you use?

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 8 днів тому

      I use always use Gutterman Sew All (recycled if it's available) and don't seem to have an issue with it. That said I use Gutterman Toldi-Lock for overlocking, and overlocked seams do sometimes bother me, although I think it's more the bulk of the seam than the thread itself. It's usually only an issue if I makes sometime very close-fitting. Whatever thread they use in Ready To Wear clothing does often bother me - especially that fishing line type stuff they sometimes use for labels. Why?! Just to make something horribly itchy even worse?!

    • @moiraberniegatt9491
      @moiraberniegatt9491 8 днів тому

    I use a magic eraser (its a white spong you can buy from supermarkets and tou onoy need water) and it's quite effective. Also, I have made quite a few Sew Over it Edie tops and you're just supposed to turn in the fabric for the neckline. It's like Tilly and the buttons Coco top. They don't tell you to do this in the pattern but I sew clear elastic within the seam first to make it more stable. So far they've kept their shape and I've had them a few years.

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 19 днів тому

      Thank you, I think I have a magic eraser about somewhere! That's a great trick with the clear elastic! I will note that for next time I make this mistake 🙈 For this Kirsten top I think I am going to need a neckband because I forgot how wide the neckline is and I hate my bra straps showing so I need something to increase the width at the shoulders. Happy to report that I've tried it on and it's really long though, so I should have some "stripes" going spare!

    You could cut your bands on the crossways of the fabric if you have enough. For your little girls hem a lettuce hem is cute and easy . Not sure if you have sewn one before. Set stitch dial to small width, widest length on zig zag, press up tiny hem, sew, stretching as you sew. Try on a scrap first, to see if you like it. Enjoy your videos.🇦🇺

      Here's the link for you! ua-cam.com/video/wT0SJG6Sx80/v-deo.htmlsi=TNA6JNKsIDO8g3_S The neckline is a bit fiddly isn't it. I don't know why but hemming / hem bands / finishing is such a struggle for me! The number of projects I pick back up and that is all left to do is ridiculous. However it is fun when a new season rolls around and I have something new to wear with minimal effort! That's how you will feel come autumn, you'll actually be strangely pleased you left it as you did because you'll get a quick win 😂 Hope you love it as much as I love mine, I wear them all the time.

    Oh Hayley makes me laugh that you think that gorgeous gilet took ages as I’m working on a quilt that was started in November 2020. The end is finally insight as I’m halfway through the first “layer” of diagonal straight line quilting (when finished I have to repeat in the other direction to cross hatch the quilt). Then I can trim the excess backing and wadding off and bind the quilt. Good luck with all your future makes.

      Ha ha, I made exactly the same comment to Dianne at Beyond the Sewing Room last week. She said a jacket was a “slow sew” because it took her a week, I was like, that would take me 6! I guess it’s just proof that it’s all relative when you’re still on a 2020 project! I’m impressed by your commitment though, keep going and one day you will be so proud of it 😊

      @ a lot of the time it was in time out because I was squirrelling doing other projects (that are in various stages of completion in time out) most aren’t finished. Some are small projects that I didn’t feel I had the skills to finish, but most are bigger projects that just felt overwhelming at the time… one being the first (huge) quilt top I made after losing my sight. I need to measure that one, choose a backing fabric and wadding and sandwich it ready to quilt… if I can remember where I put it for safety 🤦‍♀️

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom 27 днів тому

      Gosh I can relate to the “remembering where I put it” conundrum. I had to rewatch my Autumn Plans video and note down each garment because I’ve put my UA-cam clipboard somewhere safe… and I can’t find it! 🙄

      @@alwaysinthecraftroom best blessing in becoming blind is now I don’t keep clipboards or notebooks which loved playing hide and seek. All that information is now kept in notes, and I’ve started to add location information on the individual project notes since I realised I didn’t know where I’ve put that all important 1st quilt top which I made with a fabric collection called Cocoon. I still don’t know if I’ll finish it for myself to commemorate adjusting to my sight loss or finish it for my daughter to commemorate her hardest time as I feel humbled by the incredible person she’s become. I know I’ll work it out when it comes out of the black hole it is hiding in. If it ends up being mine I’ll find the perfect fabric to back it. If it ends up being hers I’ll work out how to do something she asked me to do and it will become fully reversible (patchwork both sides). I’ll leave it up to Fate/ Karma to decide who it’s been made for.

    Lovely makes Hayley! The waistband sounds like a good fix for the joggers. I've made that mistake with stretch fabric before, its so annoying. The sweater dress will be so warm and cosy 😊 Happy new year!

    Lovely New Year catchup Hayley. Love the little hats...I am just starting to think about making dress up clothes for my 3 year old Granddaughter, thinking maybe as far as I get 😁 I am learning to knit socks on double pointed needles, I have knitted for years but finally after watching a UA-camr I decided to try socks. I have undone them so many times but it is a learning curve. Apart from sewing pjs for the 2 Granddaughters for Christmas I haven't done much sewing but have finally started a Simplicity raglan sleeve blouse, it will definitely be a slow sew. 😀 Happy New Year x Debbie x x

      Hi Debbie, thank you, I'm so pleased with how they came out in the end. Honestly I've tried a few kids clothes and they are sooooo fiddly, but I enjoyed these and also some sun hats I've made a few times which have the same meditative topstitching around the brim. I'd like to try knitting one day, I think Crochet is my gateway drug into yarn and needles and such! Happy new year to you too, and good luck with the blouse!

    The pants look great. Did you make the size for your measurements? I heard you say you cut a larger elastic but didn't hear you say if the pattern is true to size or not. Thanks😀

    • @alwaysinthecraftroom
      @alwaysinthecraftroom Місяць тому

      @@robinhudson6800 hi, and thank you! I made the size suggested by my hip measurement, but cut the elastic at the length suggested by my waist measurement, which was one size bigger. I knew I’d have enough ease to pull them on and off in the smaller size that matched my hip measurement, I just thought the longer waist elastic would be more comfortable and I’m pleased to say the size I made is perfect, I love these and wear them so much!

    Oh Hayley as ever I love how you talk through why something works for you and where it didn’t work if you found a modification. I’m with you in having plans… having moved a 4 year quilt project (Solana) so far forward in September and the beginning of October that “all I have to do” is quilt the layers (what I call wrestling while sewing) and bind it I’ve made a plan to work on moving 3 projects through to finish… firstly I’m going t finish the one I paused in October (so I could make gifts for my daughter and grandson who both say they loved their new quilts). In February and March I’m going to try to finish another 4 year project (Monkey Wrench) where I’ve made 30 large quilt blocks so I can make 2 quilts (a grid of 3x4 will make a 4.5 x 6 foot quilt and have 6 blocks… or I could make one large quilt (3x4) and 2 smaller quilts (3x3). Then I’ll give myself 4 months to finish making a 7 year project (Snail Keeper’s Garden) where I have 4 out of 35 blocks made but all the pieces cut out the finished quilt will be 5x7 feet. Of course I will start new projects and be working on other current projects along the way. It still leaves me with 7 or 8 other WIPs. Here’s hoping 2025 is a wonderful sewing year and we have more successes than failures.

      @alwaysinthecraftroom Місяць тому

      Oh my goodness I so admire you quilters, I thought 1 layer of faux fur plus tweed was “wrestling” fabric but that’s nothing! Good luck on getting those projects finished, but we know new ones will get started too, it’s the fun of it! All the best for a wonderful 2025, with, as you say, more successes than failures 😊

    Love all your makes from least favorite to the top,about the Vera top: its high/low hem if you look at the style lines you can see that its goes up in the front, I have made couple of them and it’s one of my favorite top patterns but I mostly make it with three quarter length sleeve option . I wish you and your family Happy New Year 🎊🎆 ❤❤❤
