Nice water that for daytime sea trouting .plenty of colour and faster the better, i usually stick to stoats tail tubes in various sizes as I've stateted before, sedburgh anglers stretch on the lune is full of um at the moment. Bad luck with the salmon you lost. Boleside was the first Tweed beat I fished in May 2005. What a 3 days I had. First morning I had a 10lb bar of silver from the Meetings....the fish took alongside the old bridge foundation you can see in the tail. Next evening I had one from Glenmayne. The river was fairly low and the final afternoon I was on the pool you fished first , the one with the corrugated steel groyne on the far bank. The pool didn't look much in the low water, but there was a deep backwater downstream of the groyne, with a very fast flow down the left hand side. I waded right across the river so I was about 10 yards upstream of the groyne, and only about 10 yards off the left bank. I had a 15' type 6 very fast tip with a Templedog on a 1" copper tube. Casting almost straight downstream into the backwater, and letting the fly sink and the current bring the line around slowly, I caught 3 salmon from that spot. I was over the moon and the ghillie, Nigel Fell, was astounded. What an introduction to the Tweed!!

    • @abakerslife

That sounds like an epic first dance with the river. Just the type of experience that makes you come back time and time again. I will be back at Boleside one day I'm sure as it's my intention to go back and redeem that lost salmon.

Is it an unwritten law that fisherfolk must have GSDs? A few years back I used to frequently take a long walk between neighbouring towns, along a river towpath, and it was rare not to, at some point, be backed up against a hedge, threatened by an agitated GSD belonging to a fisherman...always the usual black-and-brown coat. One day I accidentally discovered a (potentially deadly) form of dog kryptonite - GSDs think they like cider.

    • @abakerslife
      @abakerslife 8 днів тому

I'm not sure as I've never seen another one fishing. Maybe the town you were in had a particularly high ratio of German shepherds. Mine wouldn't have threatened you though as she was a big softie.

    • @abakerslife

No you need to drive further than the garage, past the south Tyne railway then there is a track that takes you to the bridge at Kirkhaugh. I'm not sure you can fish the other bank but I'm no expert having only been up there twice. Before I fished I rang the chairman of the Alston Angling Association who was very helpful.

I do/did a lot of "tight line" (can't call it "Euro" when it's really an evolution of Joe Humphrey's nymphing style) nymphing. It kind of becomes addictive, for no other reason than you catch a lot of fish, lol. From what I gather, it looks like you got it because honestly, there's not much to it. The fish was beautiful. I fish NY/VT/MA (all, great places for this kind of fishing) and if I ever make it to your country, would like to try it for grayling.

It's taking some getting used to not having her out with me fishing but I'm thankful for her company and the great patience she showed me while I spent hours in the water. Yes it is true, I do enjoy a good lunch and I really do enjoy my time on the river. Every moment spent in a beautiful river is a feast for the senses and s reminder of how lucky we are to be alive. I only wish I had realised this earlier but then on the other hand if I'd discovered salmon when I was younger I would have achieved absolutely nothing in life because I'd never have been off the river!

Watched a few of your videos,, on the one you did on the upper Findhorn you said something along the lines your a bit of a green horn. Best advice,,, instead of running around from river to river get to know one, each river,,,beat and pool is different,, one's I like are the cheap as chips one's,,, river Lossiemouth,,,60 quid a season. And you never seen anyone on it, great little river. Nairn was 150, and both had miles to go at. Moved back down recently and back on the liddle water ,great little river too. One observation,, to long a line. Especially on the smaller rivers.. straight across ,,and down fast and into there faces,,,o and very light hold of the line for those tiny pluckes that develop, no resistance. And flys ,keep it simple my old pal on the nairn Gordon rennie only ever fished allys had a million fish to em. My favourite is silver stoats tubes mainly,, good for both sea trout and salmon.

Dredging the bottom with.... a floating line and 5 ft polyleader.! Sinking line required. They go out better in a wind and actually slow the swing. Mastering the sunk line will be a revelation for you in big water early season. I use the michael evans integrated short headed lines for sinking line work. The running line floats so think of it as a 40 odd ft sink tip.! I use the meduum sink a lot and often a 10ft odd fast tip on that. Ideally put a big aerial mend in on cast in order to get it to sink then when you actually start to fish the swing its dug in and swings slower with more control. I use a really slow retrieve unless the current really pulls. Its really rewarding. I only really use floaters wi tips in shallow riffles after april /may or when wanting to whizz it broadside thru lies with a belly. Ill often cast a heavy tip square let it sink to the required depth then tighten up and fish it across fairly quick but like to feel the tip dig in. Back when there was plenty of fish to easily enable comparison of techniques most folk used a sinker when the water was big fast and cold. After chucking a full sinker like a wetcell 2 or3 theyd make the change to a floater when it was warm and fish were cavorting in the lies. Or get yer inty working. Try it with a tip. These modern rods could chuck a 4 oz lead ! Theres so much more to salmon fishing than chuckin downstream wi a flioater and lettin g the current dictate speed and depth. You can dictate it! Sorry to go on but i feel when watching most of these vids esp in spring that folk are only scratching the surface. It encourages thinking about covering potential lies not just the water too.

Good plan to mainly concentrate locally. Building up a wealth of knowledge takes time. Its nice to have holiday fishing but if you actually want to catch fish like a local fish locally lol. I fish the Yorkshire Ouse/ Ure for em and know lies up and down the river now. Apart from kipper fishing the best of it is over by July as its what Hugh Falkus would have described as a "big spring run river". Ideally id move onto another river from June/july onwards that has runs of fish in summer and back end.

I made my stick from a bit of wood, hazel. Wrapped lead round bottom, covered lead in tape, added a rubber cap off a walkin stick. I used quite a stiff thick rope for the carryin strap. The lower knott attachent to the stick could move up and down the stick if needed which made the stick very user friendly whilst wading. Its hard to explain but it worked very well. I dont like the banging of metal on the river bed. The best nets are those maclean salmon nets i think. Sadly im too skint to buy one lol. Most nets are too small if you are hoping to catch big salmon. Trying to get a twenty pounder in a standard salmon guy net whilst usin a big rod is stressful in my exerience. Tight lines matey.

New to the channel but it’s made in heaven for me - fishing and cooking are my favourite things, in that order! Need to find your food. Thanks for a great video Jill R, NE fly fisher.

10/10 for perseverance!! Boleside is a lovely beat as you say. Yes we definitely are a perverse lot - sickness, travelling miles, downstream winds lol. Well done on that first fish - a wee Grilse not ST. Whilst it makes no sense to say but you 'deserved' a second fish. Great video! Thanks for producing and sharing! See you on the water.

yep looks like a wee grilse to me. I remember (years ago) somebody holding up "a 13lb seatrout from the Tyne" in a pic in Trout and Salmon. The next months letters to the editor had one from Falkus..."If that's a seatrout my cock's a lobster"

Nice video. Call at Hallington some time for a change. Excellent bank fishing. Some very energetic fish, taking hawthorns at the moment. Jill R

Sorry mate can you explain why you don't cast at around 10.00 to 11.00 (clock face) as if facing at 12 to the opposite bank, your water coverage is massively reduced fishing at around 2.00 (clock face) as you are doing it no?

If the opposite bank is 12 O' clock and I cast at 10 or 11 I'd be casting upstream wouldn't I? The fly line would be pulled in front of the fly by the current.

Since I've started tying my own flies I only use barbless hooks.
