CHANGES blew my mind! The Dresden Files #12 REVIEW
Just finished this one and this is way better than the previous long story, The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.
Who ever said skip the gunslinger book gave horrible advice .
I enjoyed this, I especially enjoyed the recognition of the sort of commonplace ways in which Curwen's identity fraud was noticed by the people involved. Joseph Curwen is such a great villain because he was sort of a dumbass.
"like a season finale" damn that is the best description chages I've ever heard! It totally is that! And yeah it's not the nice finale but the "kick you in the balls and shove you through the meatgrinder" kind of finale that needs EP1 of the next season for the viewer/reader to heal. If we keep the analogy howeer it feels like Ghost Story is the EP1 of Season 2 that honestly should have been an after credit scene. (yeah, I admit I really am not a fan of Ghost Story)
We want more videos! We want more videos! 😊
would really like to hear your remarks on the six core Dune books, please consider
you exude 'knowledgeable' ,thanks for sharing your commentary
have you seen The Haunted Palace? That was an interesting take on the book. But Vincent Price as Curwen is pretty epic.
I know I’m super late to the party lol! New sub, hope you’ll continue your channel! I’m just so happy you listed W and G as your number one DT story. I absolutely agreed with all you said about it. W and G was sublime, heartbreaking and just absolutely beautiful! Thank you sir!
Finally someone shares my opinion on Wastelands! I always see people put this as a top 3 DT book and I never understand why
Lol wizard and glass is garbage.
This is the book I recommend when people are vaguely interested in reading WoT. "Just finish book 4 then decide!" I LOVED this book. Tam is...by far...my favorite character in the series so seeing him be the amazing person he is in the two rivers. This was absolutely my favorite book *until* Towers of Midnight for reasons you said in your predictions 😂 yep some of those are pretty close but it's a long wait. A well worth it wait! So TSR is my personal 2nd favorite book. Loved the review!
Good video, mostly agree with your ranking and assessment of each book, with the exception of DT3, which I would place much higher. 1. Wizard & Glass 2. Waste Lands 3. Dark Tower 4. Drawing of Three 5. Wolves of Calla 6. Gunslinger 7. Song of Susanna 8. Wind through Keyhole
The Gunslinger was my favorite out of the series. It's the only book in the series that has a really particular vibe or aesthetic. If you recall any of the scenes from it, they're like cryptic album covers that are designed to be interpreted or perfectly composed fine art photographs: Jake falling into the pit; the madwoman preacher and the Tull massacre; the golgotha and the cosmic vision Roland has at the end, and so on. They're like the images that pop into your head when you read surreal and abstract song lyrics. By contrast, what images do you remember from the subsequent books? Giant cyborg bears and haunted house wood monsters or whatever? It's fine. Whatever. They were fun books and I love the series, but the first one is obviously the product of King's more literary aspirations whereas the rest of them are more like well written and entertaining comic books.
Just read this book. It was awesome and while I thought I could predict the end. There was still a little twist to surprise
Great video. Thanks.
Most lists I see have Wizard & Glass at the top. And I agree. I'm on my second turn around the wheel and can't wait to get to it again.
The Old English in this story is the aboslute best aspect of this novel, and he worked long and hard on that I'm sure. The letters are just wonderful if you listen to the different audiobooks on YT to hear their approach on them.
There was an earlier movie adaptation called "The Haunted Palace" starring Vincent Price that was released back in 1963. It diverges a fair bit from the novel, but its still got most of the main beats intact.
My favorite fantasy series and book series ever written
Great video! Thank you!!
The older classic style of writing HPL had consistently used is really one of the major appeals of reading in general, but especially for his works. Horror exists for its descriptions wed to story events. It doesn't sound llke HPL is a writer for you. King (who is an utter meh to me) probably is a better fit, generally, but...well, of course I'm saying the obvious.
I'll admit: I was almost bored by this Lovecraft novel. Almost. But the ending is great. So is your review. Great one, man! I'm now subscribed, cheers 🍻
Next video?
Anyone who doesn’t like one of the only positive Male centric Poly relationships in mainstream fiction doesn’t deserve to have their opinion acknowledged lol
Butcher said in an interview that Maggie is the result of a bet that someone made Jim that he couldn't write a bondage scene and make it plot relevant
I very much expected Padin Fain to be alive. And he seemed off from the get go. As for Rand being the dragon reborn- I went in not knowing and I was honestly unsure whether it will be Rand or Mat for a while. I suspected Rand more, but still...
"Lovecraft uses the copout where he says a thing is Indescribable" "He overly describes things" "He uses too much fear of the unknown" "The horror was known very early on" Isn't it damnable that all those statements are true? Also, I picked him up last month and read absolutely everything he wrote or even had a part in writing, easily my favorite author of all time (in the span of a month, yes, I make my mind up very quick). I fully acknowledge he overdoes it with the descriptions at times, I'm almost certain in this case you we're talking about his description of the old part of the town, he really went at it. But I almost prefer it because I don't lose focus easily and I really like testing my imagination to see how vivid a picture I can paint in my head. I think the fact that I'm taking part in a variety of forms of entertainment (video games, movies, music, shows, books) has a part to play in calling him my favorite, because I can see how he's responsible for a lot more than I thought. And another thing, I don't know if it's because I read the book before seeing the movie but, what do you think about Herbert West? Because I thought it was among the scariest things ever and that's including any other form of media. It constantly made me feel uneasy for the majority of the story.
I was with you until you spoke about Herbert West.
@@UnsoberIdiot Fair enough, might just be the way my imagination works things out. Like him walking home during the night feeling like something is watching/following him right after their first experiment or finding the guy at their door or reading in the news about what happened to the doctor and who came to visit him later on. That all made for extremely tense moments for me.
Excellent video and great selection... My top is almost the same only changing Lynch for Hitchcock... but I haven't seen many Lynch movies yet
Thank you! Hitchcock is a master and I’m a big fan of his as well. Lynch can be hard to get into but has some accessible entries to help ease you into his works.
Totally relate to feeling overwhelmed by the ever growing tbr list 😅
It always gets bigger and bigger! And since I posted this video it’s probably grown to twice as big
Fool Moon is my favorite 👍
Fun video idea!
Thanks!
Great list! Although I was hoping to see Name of the Wind somewhere on here! Haha
Hahah I was thinking about reading that this summer but between WOT and First Law that’ll probably end up on next year’s list
Definitely going to check out Stalker that sounds awesome! Wholeheartedly agree about the Haunting of Hill House, I've only seen a little of the adaptation but I definitely feel like the book didn't quite land for me. I think I expected it to be really scary and creepy, and it just felt like nothing was happening for a really long time until we get to those final scenes (which I actually did really love). From what I've seen of the adaptation it seems a little more fast-paced. Great video, Julian!
Yeah the adaptation used the book more as a building block for the themes it wanted to explore and in most cases definitely improved on it!
I feel like Jurassic Park is so Iconic! It was directed and produced so beautifully. There are so many iconic scenes and its just so good. Especially the t-rex scenes!
It’s one of the best!
I think the combo of De Palma & Sissy Spacek are what made the movie so much scarier than the book! Same goes for Kubrick & Jack Nicholson!
I don’t watch horror or scary movies, but I LOVED The Haunting of Hill House!
It was so good and really accessible for non horror people!
Haha f*** Gawyn. That guy sucks. Glad to hear you loved TSR. What did you think of the way-back ter’angreal (the crystal columns)?
Loved loved loved that sequence. Couldn’t believe what I was reading. Didn’t expect the book to get that deep into the history and lore but it was done so well!
I completely agree with you about 'The Shining'. Poor Mr King doesn't always have the best luck with adaptations but that's not the case here the film is bar far the superior product. Great video as always. Thank you.
Yeah the adaptations of his work are most definitely of mixed quality! Thank you for watching as always
If you somehow still haven't both read or watched The Shinning, which would you recommend first? Asking for a friend
movie better 🥶
Watch first, that’s the way I did it and think it’s the better way to go about it. The book fleshes some things out more and goes deeper into the hotel’s history, but I think if you read it first you may just be thinking about what the movie cut out. Taking the movie as it’s own entity separate from the book is a must
Great list of movies Julian! Jurassic Park is one of my favorites, but I haven’t read the book. In fact, I don’t think I’ve read any of the books here…yet.
I’d recommend all of them! Now that you’ve read Salem’s lot and the dark tower I think the shining would be a good follow up
ƤRO𝓂O𝕤ᗰ 😌
Dude just wait, the second book will open things up way, way more. Book 2 is like a completely different book in a really great way
In the same way that, like you said, the second act was way different than the first act
YYYYYESSSSSS!!!!!!!
Me when the reds do the rising 😩😩😩
Me when the 🐧
I’ve really had no interest in this book, but great review Julian. 😊
Thank you as always!!
Yes!! Been waiting for this review. Excited for you to read the rest of the series.
I've been wanting to start Red Rising as well. I've been trying to gloss over the reviews so that way I can form my own opinions. But you're right. I think as Booktubers we try to read as much as possible. But there's other things too. Ive been watching these silly reality dating shows on Netflix, and while I acknowledge how incredibly ridiculous they are, my husband and I are having fun debating the many questionable choices these people are making 😅
Having finished the book I’d recommend it! Hahah that’s too true, although I leave the reality shows to my gf to watch but it’s a constant struggle for me not to just binge Star Trek at night
4:18 I just came back from my local library with master and commander, it would be fun to buddy read!
That’s awesome! I probably won’t get around to it until later in may but you have to let me know if you like it!
I'll also probably read in may! For now I have a monster to tackle in the count of monte christo
@@blueberrycomics oooh that’s a good one! Read that way back in my school days. I hope you like it!
great goals! I really wanna start reading philosophy, as well as continue the dagger and the coin. WoT has taken a back seat, as I didn't have the proper time and energy to continue so I'll wait till the summer to continue with DR and TSR.
