I just grabbed an almost identical piece as this one. It is a real classic I believe. Just a really solid execution overall.

Got the green Kamasu. HATE the non-AR coated crystal. An almost constant "haze". Would have been happier with a mineral crystal that I can actually view the watch face through.

I personally use pegwood with rodico on the end to place the hands and to help clean up the dial and hands afterwards. It helps to get right down to eye level with the movement to see the pinion where the seconds hand will go, and to use the handheld hand setting tools.

I think it's funny how this watch is "hated" but also owned by everybody lol

@TheChirpyPanda flieger should not have writings, but the Roler AirKing has both the make and the name of the watch on the dial. Same for the IWC Saint Exupery Utc Edition. A thought?

What is the strap width?

I picked one from AliExpress for less than $50 and it's pretty amazing. It's actually interesting to know that the price of these watches decline over time by so much. I think You mentioned that you got yours for $110. That's like more than twice of what I paid

9:37 this is a screw that plugs the hole for the regulator. This allows you to regulate timing without removing the movement (which you would otherwise have to do since it has a monoblock case and the caseback doesn’t come off.) As of 2024, Seiko still has parts for and services these movements for $325. On their US site, they list the movements they work on and the service costs. The 5625 movement is automatic, btw. The 5626 is the same movement with the day and date.

The rotor is like that because it only charges the watches in one direction, in the other direction it swings freely

I've got that watch for over a little of 2 years now. It still works as intended. The type A clean look makes it a little mysterious in a good way.

Brass, bronze or nickel tweezers are your friends when handling hands or any part that can scratch. Dials scratch incredibly easily, so best to avoid fiddling with them too much, or drag tweezers over them. I usually use brass and keep my nickel tweezers for the more precision stuff that still requires a delicate tool. Brass is the safest, but they bend really easily. As for the hands. I haven’t found a second hand that won’t fight back. I personally don’t recommend the cheap hand press used in the video. They tend to cover what you’re trying to see and too wobbly. The real ones cost a good bit and have no wobble. Best to use a good set of handheld hand tools, get down super low with a good loupe with around 4x magnification, use Rodico to hold the hand in the proper position with the non dominant hand, then press on with hand tool in dominant hand. Yeah, it’s awkward having your face at desk level working 4” away from the movement with a loupe, but the second hand is like balancing a needle on a bit larger needle. If you can’t see what you’re doing or not gently pressing down perfectly perpendicular to the stem, it will bend. The movement doesn’t matter, as the battle with the second hand will be the same. Cheaply made hands will make the fight even tougher, so best to source the better parts.

Saw your video and i have a question - if i may. Sadly, I find myself only liking watches that are very expensive. But I don't care about the name, so my question is : Is it possible to have someone (not me!) make a watch from scratch by buying the parts to make my dream watch? Is this possible?

I have the exactly same watch, in golden. I had it at a good watchmaker for maintenance, and the watch is very good now. Of course it doesnt hold time as a quartz, the caliber is made with more tolerances to build huge masses.

Not all people are made to handle to fix phones or watches. Just leave it to the professionals. But it is always good to try.

Some time later the hour numerals and the triangle got a lot more greenish apparently. It happily rivals Orient Ray II in a 7-hour test, so I'm pretty happy with it anyway, but would prefer it to be more white (minute markers should match the color). And the second hand should get replaced with a silver one with a better shape.

Damn, I just bought one of these, then found this video. Like you said though, it's a good starter as long as it works. Plus if I wanna try watchmaking in the future, it'll be a good low-risk watch to fiddle with.

So this and the San Martin pilots watch type A are exact except for the lume and strap San Martin lume is insane bright the strap is genuine leather the hands are better just better quality for $50 more in my opinion - $149 Amazon USA

You're a good sport in showing the failures. Did you try again or get different parts? I'd love to see the finished product.

The giveaway about its age is the "made in the USSR" sign. They are elegant but very primitive and cheap. The movement will not last long so they are best kept as a very occasional wear for maybe 1 evening every couple of months. For a novel and much better made watch, I suggest the poljot signal alarm watch. Much more robust.

The movement is real HMT FWIK, the case is not hmt, the dial is fake hmt. Made in mass production, no dial like it existed. So even with authentic case, dial, and proper case back original strap/bands are long gone and typically being replaced or refurbished are ok. But yeah the dial, case, and original matching movement is what us collectors are looking for. All HMT have acrylic crystal and along with strap are ok to be replaced, but the buyer should know.

Learned a lot from this lesson. I'm about to put together my own watch and will try not to make these mistakes. Thank you for this educational video.
