- I some how stumbled into the HMT brand when I was doing my daily online watch window shopping on eBay. Was looking up vintage watches and these HMT watches from India started popping up, for as little as $13USD delivered as well.
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the price and initially thought it'll just be a cheap quartz watch, but upon further investigation, it seems that these were from a well known indian brand HMT, hand wound mechanical watch with 17 jewels. I couldn't resist and here we are today, unboxing a watch at an incredible price.
However, is this even worth the price tag?

Hi. Citizen of Japan trained HMT employees to make the movement in India so it is a very good watch. The movements are original and vintage and most of the rest of the watch is made from mainly after market parts. I own two and I really like them.
Thanks for the info. This really clarifies how this was indeed built with after market parts, but good to know the HMT movement is original and that the staff was actually trained by Citizen to make these movements directly in Indian. Makes this watch extra especial, despite it low price. We can all excuse the strap as it was aftermarket.
Jawan ( Hindi language word) = Soldier. It was mainly manufactured for indian soldiers. The arrow symbol is used in the number plate of indian army vehicles. The strap is not original. The original HMT strap will have HMT logo on the buckle. Your watch probably have various parts from old HMT watches. The movement (0231) used in the watch is based on Citizen 020. It has a hacking movement, the seconds hand will stop when the crown is pulled out. My father's HMT Ajeet watch is smoothly working for past 43 years. It will still work for next 25 years said one watch repairer. Please don't make any negative judgement about HMT watches based on one refurbished HMT watch. The name of the watch is mostly written below the HMT logo. HMT watch was government of India's company. Due to mismanagement and taking bribe from rival watch companies ended the HMT watch brand...
HMT watches are cheap pieces of crap.
There is no pilot dial ever made. And no screw down caseback. Absolutely Franken.
The tricky part is the real ones can also be bought around 20-30 bucks.
Love these watches, I've had two of them now and both of the stems have broken on them but luckily it's a cheap fix, there so cheap because they're franken watches with lots of old parts put together, they run well and seem to be put together okay for the price. Definitely something quirky to add to the collection
I agree, I initially was disappointed by the quality, but thought to myself after that for $14 bucks, you really can't go wrong, and it'll be a great watch to ticker with and build upon since it is already a franken watch.
From what I know these are usually frankenwatches, so they are made from various parts from other watches. The dials are repainted and the cases are refurbished. The serial numbers on the beck probably wont tell you anything since its most likely from another watch/model. Still a very cool watch, Im looking to buy some myself atm 👌🏻💯
This explains alot actually, because it feels like things are randomly put together, but the dial feels real enough. Just gotta see if the movement stays actively
@@TheChirpyPanda to be honest I don’t see why it shouldnt! If they are made from the parts of different movements but are all the same caliber the parts should in theory be interchangeable 🧐 anyway with the price they come at its worth it either way. Im going to buy one to make a custom dial with and see what happens 😂
That's a good looking dial and color combination. I like the acrylic cyrstal, too. A little strap swap and you've got a decent watch! I'm anxious to hear your report on the stability and accuracy of the movement, though.
Yeh I need to spend a bit more time with this watch to see whether its worth even the $13.99, but if we change the strap, it does look nice. The case is a bit rough though.
Maybe it's more eco friendly to buy a refurbished watch rather then to throw it away. I think giving things like this a new lease of life is a good thing at a very cheap price . Nice buy
The history of HMT watches is pretty fun to learn about. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the prime minister of India visited Switzerland where he was gifted a watch which truly impressed him. So when he came back to India he asked if we could create such watches in our own country. He wanted to create affordable mechanical watches that can be worn by the everyday citizen of the country. So the Government of India started the Hindustan Machine Tools Company or better known as HMT in the 1960s. Just 13 years after India’s independence from British Colonial Rule. At this time, the Indian leaders were suffering from PTSD from over a century of colonial rule so foreign companies weren’t allowed to do business in India for the fear of being colonized like the East India company did. This policy proved to be a detriment in Nehru’s quest to create affordable and reliable timepieces. So the HMT watch company collaborated with Citizen watch Company Japan to get the technical know-how of creating watch movements and began to create in-house hmt movements on all their watches. Then in 1970s they set up a factory in bangalore and in the upcoming decades they’d set up atleast 2 more factories across various cities in India. Being a government company, most of its decisions had to be approved by the government, and the government’s sluggish pace of work and overly paperwork focused workstyle eventually killed the company as quartz became mainstream and the HMT watch company didn’t even adapt to the quartz technology until 1991. When they eventually did adopt the Quartz, private Indian companies like Titan watches had already taken the market by storm with their updated designs which made hmt look like old relics and quartz pieces that far outperformed anything HMT produced. The company, by this point had already sold a 100 million watches but its run was at its end. The company continued to report losses for the next 2 decades, put on life support by government funding (read as- taxpayer money) until 2016, when the government of India announced that it’ll be closing the manufacturing division of the HMT watchmaking company and will continue to sell timepieces until the manufactured stock runs out.
Haha the ol' Bombay special. Avoid watches from India on eBay. They're Frankenstein watches. I've seen some nice shiny Orients and Seikos from India on eBay. Problem is, they don't exist. Oh, and they all mysteriously have the exact same case. Funny that.

I got 5 of those watches because I needed to learn to unmount/mount a mechanical watch: the movement you see in there is the "hmt 020", produced under licence of Citizen who made the same movement named Citizen 0201. Here's to you its complete stripdown tutorial

Yeh, I actually did that near the end of the video, it has a HMT movement but there isn't any other meaningful information for me to research it unfortunately
I bought an HMT Julibee Open Heart and it seems to be a Franken watch. It's very beautiful in my opinion and runs ok. It ran -320 seconds before I did some adjustments. Now it runs +30, which is fine by me. I have to buy a real leather watch band because the cheap metal watch band feels terrible. It's my 2nd mechanical watch. Mt first being an Invincta S2 rally skull watch (not sure of the actual name).

I've always wanted a hmt watch but I haven't gotten a source I can trust.
100% and I don't think eBay is probably the place, looks like these are like franken watches cobbled together from other watches.
They are put together from parts. I just bought one to practice on. Trust me tear it apart. Chances are the mainspring isn’t even the correct one and is to short.

There a last remaining HMT outlet in Bangalore. I am going there to get my Father in Laws watch given for repair. They have some of the last HMT watches for sale.
HMT were like Seiko of India...made for absolute general class. They have some watches that were pretty good. Since it was Govt run company the prices were dirt cheap for poor people.
That belt is aftermarket (maybe Chinese make) probably worth a dollar.

It's first watch made in india, power reserve 34 hours but dail is not original, movement 0230 it is old citizen movement, licenced by citizen made in india around early 1960 and it will last for decades.

@@TheChirpyPanda these were made/designed for indian army, hence the name. There are other series such as pilot, janata (people/public), etc.
it is not an original watch but a franken one. It has citizen collaborative movement.
