Show and Tell knitting podcast focuses on vintage (and vintage-inspired) hand knit garments, how to make them and how to accessorize them. Your host, Billie ("billietoy"), uses costume jewelry, hats, handbags, gloves and scarves to style each sweater.
Some episodes include guest knitters from around the world who will showcase their personal collections. Each will share selections from their portfolio of retro garments, from cardigan sweaters to jumpers / pullovers to coats and jackets.
Whether you have a passion for vintage 1940s style, or want to follow me on my knitting (and travel) escapades, each episode will bring a new adventure. You're likely to see patterns or yarns that will inspire you, particularly if you love vintage fashion.

    Hi Billie, knitting certainly keeps the mind and the hands nimble. Your colorwork project looks beautiful. I also have an upcoming "challenge" recreating a pattern from photos. One of my husband's cousin's son (lol) is a talented young singer. Last year he represented South Africa in a singing contest in New York. He won a gold medal in the pop category. He wants a sweater he saw in a Canadian pop singer's music video. His mom asked me if I could recreate it. I'm now waiting for the yarn to be shipped before I can start it. Whenever I find myself in a casino, I stay away from the tables because that's where you lose a lot of money in a very short time. I liked the old fashioned slot machines. Not those new things that's more like a video game. I only play them for entertainment, not to win big money. However, I always did have good luck on them. So this brings me to a story of my own. Many years ago, there was a festival held on the ground of a local resort (greek Mykonos themed). I was there with colleagues from the newspaper I was working at. One of the stalls had great shark tooth necklaces (very surfer like). My eldest son always wanted one but I didn't have enough cash on me to buy it. So I ran to the casino in the resort.and played a slot machine with the little cash I had on me until I won enough to buy the necklace lol.

      You gamble? I should have known....my kindred spirit! While it's true that you can lose a lot at the tables, you can also **win** a lot. The trick is knowing your limit in advance and walking away. Truthfully, I try to employ the same strategy in my investing....but that's another story for another time.

    always enjoy listening to you Billie! I'm sure I've said this before, but you are a great story-teller and have a lovely voice. I'm also looking to be challenged by patterns and techniques. I try to have a learning project and a straightforward one on my needles, but it never quite works out that way! I have several WIPS that need brainpower to get them finished, brainpower that eludes me. Your top looks so nice on you and appears as if it's very soft and comfortable - have you talked about it previously? Your Norwegian-inspired jersey is looking amazing, hope it goes smoothly as I can't wait to see it finished!

      Smoothly? I'm waiting for that project! You're awfully kind, though. The top I'm wearing was a knit along...the slit neckline. I kept those sessions private, so you're right....I may never have spoken about it. I'll revive it on an upcoming episode.

    I'm a risk taker with my hobbies as well. I think I have about as many failures as successes. I'm always trying to push the envelope and do something new and I don't care much for popular things. And natural sourdough will have different bacteria and yeast based on what lives in your own place, so one person's sourdough will always be different from someone else's. That steeked colorwork cardigan was so beautiful! As to your question about whether I would make a sweater that required me to swatch every square: I think I would have just fudged it and sewn a bunch of mismatching squares to make a Frankenstein cardigan! Jerri is very talented and I think this video is a great reminder for something you both subscribe to: that there is no need to produce 3 billion sweaters a year! I am trying to keep this in mind as I embark on making more and more complicated sweaters and produce less and less -- I may be producing less, but I am producing even more awesome stuff that I will use for years to come. Thanks for your suggestion. I took a look....it's like the "Armenian knitting" that some used in the Schiaparelli Bowknot knit along a few years back. I did a tutorial on the technique, but ended up doing intarsia for my own project at that time. It's too late now, as you'll see in my next video, since I've already knit a good part of the cashmere sweater. I would have to swatch the method with this yarn to see about the stretchability factor.

      I recommend calculating yardage per 100g from the nm weight in order to get a good understanding of how the yarn compares to store bought yarn. What colourmart calls 'lace' is quite a bit finer than normal hand knitting lace since it is used for machine knitting. Heavy lace weight is probably similar to a hand knitting lace weight, but will seem finer while unwashed.

    Thank you for going through the process of deciding on yarn/needles/fabric for your lovely sweater. I have learned that it’s okay to rip out, start over with another pattern, or another yarn, do what it takes to get a finished project that will be worn and loved. About to begin a light top with yarn I purchased over a year ago while traveling-without a pattern in mind. Used it for a shawl and just don’t like the shawl, so planning on making the “Bamboo” top I found on Ravelry. It’s very modern looking! But has a sideways construction which I’ve been meaning to try. Worst part will be ripping out the shawl, creating skeins, washing, drying. It’s a silk/alpaca/linen blend in neutral silvery greys (2 colors). Wish me luck!

    • @ShowandTellknitting
      @ShowandTellknitting Місяць тому

      I'm familiar with that procedure. Greys are amongst my faves; the blend sounds heavenly. I'm sure it will be worth it to have something you'll use. I've ripped out mohair, so nothing scares me! Break a leg!

    The advice you got not to do stranded knitting with cashmere because it's a waste of cashmere is ridiculous! I am glad you ignored their advice. If you want a cashmere stranded colourwork fabric then of course you'll have strands on the back, it's just the way it is. It's like being told not to make a chocolate cake with chocolate because it's a waste of chocolate. I think your project looks really nice, and those nice soft strands of cashmere will be a joy to wear 😊

    The vintage pattern looks gorgeous with the yarns you have chosen, Billie, traditional Fair Isles tend to be stickier wools, but that is because those wools were hardwearing and easily available in Shetland, but the cashmere would be a lovely luxurious treat whenever you wear it.💙Coned yarns are oiled to go through the knitting machines, so that may account for the slightly different feel, they should bloom once washed.

    Hi Billie. Your new knitting is quite something! I love the colours on you and the pattern, the scale you have chosen looks very good. I can't believe you were told that cashmere floats were a waste of yarn?!! I disagree. What a great service from Colourmart, not only rewinding the two strands for you, but also the provision of samples big enough to knit a swatch. I've noticed that dying can affect yarn softness, perhaps this is the case? I very much enjoyed listening to your process, back and fore, and sideways, at the beginning. I'm not sure what weight your chenille is, or how much yardage you have, but there is a design called Tillie by Louisa Harding that uses the chenille as the contrasting yarn on a colourwork cardigan, the main colour is a wool yarn and the firmness of the colourwork and the wool would both reduce the amount of worming and abrasion for the chenille. Tillie is one of the designs in Rowan's 40th Anniversary book that came out a few years ago. I have also used chenille for weaving, using it as my weft along with a non superwash wool as my warp, I lightly fulled it before blocking it and so far I haven't had any worming with the chenille, as the wool holds everything in place.

      Tillie is a lovely pattern. I hadn't seen it before. The idea of using it in colorwork may be just the ticket! I'd need to find a color to work with it that won't detract from it. Maybe I can even find something close. Another project for another day! There's 400 yards.

But I know that with fingering yarn I usually get 7 sts per inch on 3.25 mm needles (8 on 2.75, 9 on 2.5) so I dont feel like I need to make a swatch every time. I do periodically measure my work and hold it up to my body to make sure it is the right size but otherwise, I dont worry. Especially i find vintage patterns often list the gauge in stocking stitch even if its not knit in stocking stitch. Regarding 3ply yarn, when I first started vintage knitting and was trying to sub for modern yarns, I would try and find the yarn on ravelry to get the yardage and didnt understand why all vintage yarns tended to have more yardage than modern yarns...usually like 150 yards per 1 oz, with modern yarns having like 100 yards per 1 oz...because I didnt know that the yarns werent just standard fingering yarns and were something between lace and fingering. Then I saw a Retro Claude video about vintage 3ply yarns and it started to make sense (Although I had trouble understanding why Brits called different yarn weights by their ply, because I understood ply to be the actual strands twisted around eachother, which didnt necessarily denote weight. I have a lot of 10ply/worsted yarn that is only actually 1 ply of yarn, and fingering/4ply which is only plied by 2 strands)"
