Fogstar Drift Pro 12V 230Ah Teardown & Load Test #lifepo4 #Fogstar #victron
This was a tough nut to crack! I have tore down a few batteries for the channel in the past, but this battery I received from Fogstar Batteries almost had me defeated! The video is a little bit longer than my usual posts but there are a few unique features about this battery that i wanted to try and cover. This battery has it all! A unique 300 amp JBD BMS, Communication Ports and Victron Integration. A 300A ANL fuse pops prematurely in this video!
I hope the video helps show the overall build quality and its features to you. Thanks for watching!

    Great video! Ive ordered this battery based on your videos. And also a victron shunt. It will be used to power a 55lb trolling motor. What is the safest voltage to go down to on the batteries? Will the BMS protect the battery from over-discharge, and if so what voltage is that? I can't seem to find these values anywhere. Any help appreciated. Many thanks

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY День тому

      Using a shunt is always a great thing. The BMS should stop the battery from over discharge at 10V (2.5v) per cell.

      Thanks for the response! So I reckon if I aim for about 11.7v on the river, maximum discharge, I should maintain a happy battery. Many thanks!

    I just bought one from eBay, and it was only 189 USD. Also had a 4th of July sale on it. 38 off 189 USD. I'm glad to see it is a great quality battery. I'll be using mine on my 15-foot tri hull fishing boat for lights and trolling motor. My engine doesn't use a battery. It's an 18hp evinrude 1967 model. Tha KS for this video. Have a great day

    Hi there. I have this box and today decided to fit a cheap battery voltage monitor. After fitting, I closed the lid and sparks and plumes of smoke came bellowing out. It's an old 75ah lead battery I have and wish to replace now. It's good to see the eco worthy fits. My question is, have I damaged the box. I'm really not good with any of this. I tested the USB and that seems OK. I will test the cigarette lighter tomorrow. I use it with a trolling 55lb motor, but am concerned that the 60a breaker won't kick if my motor gets tangled etc. Any help would be great. Awesome channel BTW. Cheers

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 4 дні тому

      Yikes, the lid has a plastic cover that hides and protects the cables and base of fuses etc. Sounds like something made contact with your battery terminals. Check all cables for damage and ensure your battery terminals are not making any contact with anything else internally before placing the lid on. Hope everything works out.

    • @neiloxley9726
      @neiloxley9726 4 дні тому

      Thanks for this. Yeah I hadn't put one of the terminals on the monitor as I was testing to see if it would fit. It basically touched the other terminal as i closed the lid and melted a bit of the cabling to the terminal. The cables in the box are fine and the battery seems OK. Just wasn't sure if there were any tests I could perform. I was rather annoyed with myself! Just one more note on the box. I would use the handle. The strap broke a while back carrying a 17kg battery in it. Luckily it was 2 inches off the floor at the time! Thanks Neil

    • @neiloxley9726

    Its a shame the cutoff is so low, that could damage the cells, also they advertise low temp cutoff but it seems to be false advertising. They are £199 now so pretty cheap assuming you can deal with these issues.

    Just discovered your channel whilst doing research before buying a battery for a canoe 12v outboard. Thanks for your useful info. The videos are simply explained even for those who only managed a grade c physics O level 😢. I see on Fogstars site that they have introduced a "drift eco". Have you any plans/views on how they compare to the standard "drift?

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 10 днів тому

      Hi, thanks for watching and taking time to comment. I had no idea about the Eco versions until you mentioned them. From the website they are using RepT cells which I haven't seen or tested yet. Seems they have a shorter cycle life 3000 compared to the Drift 3500 that's using EVE cells and the eco are without heating or bluetooth but says you can connect up to 16 in parallel 😲 not sure if that's a typo. Typically it's 4. They are still using JBD BMS units. Looks like they will arrive in August. Hmm wonder if they will send one out for me to see.

    • @EddieFlixton
      @EddieFlixton 9 днів тому

      I'll look forward to you testing the Eco model. I'm not too worried about longevity as I'll only be using it a couple of days a year. My main concern is that it's light, cheap and obviously safe. If you do get one to test and it ticks those boxes it looks like it's perfect for my needs. Thanks for the informative videos 👍

      @@DCGUY i have seen people using a buck dc to dc converter to pull energy from the car battery for their portable power station. They can pull say 500 watts when the engine runs and feed it to the solar entry of the station. I wonder if load output on the mppt charge controller could be used for that..🤔 So in a 24v configuration the load output would be double the watts you demonstrated. Do you have any idea.?

    • @user-vk5ws3jl1l
      @user-vk5ws3jl1l 11 днів тому

      I just tries this and got 240w input from the load output of mppt into my oukitel portable power station. But it jumps to 0 after a few secs and starts back again after a while. Maybe bc solar was not connected..

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 11 днів тому

      @user-vk5ws3jl1l The mppt controller won't be able to handle initial surges and you are also limited to how many amps the unit can handle on the dc output. Some are as low as 1A in a 48V setup.

    Thanks for all of these informative and detailed videos. I'm new to batteries (been using a small Bluetti power station for a few years but it's time to move up :) and all of your info has been super valuable in trying to get up to speed! We've settled on the regular LiTime 100ah based on your great vids. But the charger: i know (from your vids and your website) that it needs to be a LiFePO4 specific charger, but should I be using a 10amp or 20amp charger to charge these with? Does it matter how fast I charge it?

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 13 днів тому

      Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. When it comes to charging, its really down to how long you wait. At 10 amps, it will take approx 10 hours to replenish a fully discharged battery at 20 amp that drops to 5 hours and so on as charge amps increase.

    This battery needs a 'kick start' which you can get from a Renogy solar controller or a Renogy charger. It's an off 'feature' but the battery needs to be switched back on. Renogy should have told you this. The battery is not dead but very very asleep!

      Thanks for taking time to comment. I tried every trick in the book to wake the battery up but to no avail. Renogy did send out another battery, it too went well below 10V but did accept charge again. Renogy said the reason it discharged so low was because of the 0.2A discharge rate.

    I bought two of these in case one dies. I am using the 30 amp which is over-rated for my needs, but it has been quite reliable. I recommend going with over-rating as it is going to be a tiny bit sturdier. The one draw back is the connection points are pretty feeble and I am using this as a non-stationary controller for conditioning and charging my car battery, so those connections really get wiggled around and I have had wires fatigue and break off and you really don't want that happening. The solution is screw the device to a small piece of wood and glue gun and further secure down the wiring so it doesn't fatigue at the connection points and you also get more electrical insulation. Just glue gunning the wiring to the box should really help stabalize the wiring. I recently got a deal on a glass 50 watt panel, which replaced a plastic panel that I bought as 20 watts, but I think was only 10 watts and only worked well enough for a year. Don't get plastic solar panels: waste of money! Glass rules. So now I am overpowered, but I can also charge 5 volt usb lights and such, right on the usb ports on the controller and if my car battery gets drained for some reason, I can charge it back up pretty quickly with the 50 watts and controller. This controller is a great cheap solution for small setups. Just connect the controller to the battery before you connect the solar panels or you will fry the controller.

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 24 дні тому

      Hi, thanks for watching and taking time to comment. The temperature you see will be coming from one of 3 sensors. One sensor is located on top of the battery cells as a general ambient sensor, another is usually lower down inside the case attached to the actual cell wall and that is probably why you see the difference in readings. Any idea of the wire gauge your using? It is normal for cables to get warm under heavy loads due to natural resistance and I personally use 50mm" copper cable which can still get warm during heavier loads.

    They seem like good products but can they compete when the price of batteries is dropping so fast and they are still quite expensive? Yes you can't beat that 300amp bms but i got a 24 volt 100ah ecoworthy/dc house battery for £400 via ebay so if you could find that deal again you could get 2 for the price of one of those fogstar batteries. That is double the capacity and higher output (5.2kw?). Obviously the fogstar is a premium product that fits a purpose and i have no idea what is in the ecoworthy and whether the BMS would survive that sort of treatment (I mean two ecoworthies to get 200amps at 25.6 volts).

    Thanks, this has solved the issue with my inverter in my van. Everything seems to be working now. My inverter has an option for bypass mode, which I have currently disconnected due to the bonding. With the neutral and earth bonded, will this matter when the inverter is in bypass mode? Essentially, will it bond the neutral and earth on the ring main of the house? Thanks

    • @DCGUY
      @DCGUY 24 дні тому

      Many inverters with internal bonding will only bond neutral and ground when in bypass mode, or when using grid power to charge the batteries and when in inverter mode there is no bonding which causes the reverse neutral error. If you have removed the bonding in the inverter then the bonding will take place at the consumer unit when in inverter mode only. I am assuming you have the inverter connected to the grid via a separate consumer unit for charging via a dedicated RCD / MCB and if so the inverter will use that bond during charge and when it switches to inverter it uses the upstream consumer unit. If it were to go into bypass mode for any reason the chances are the RCD from main consumer feed may trip as it will see the upstream RCD and bond. Every Inverter is different and I haven't personally trialled this scenario but would be interested to know what your own findings are as it may help others as I only know my own unit in detail.

      @@DCGUY Thanks for your reply. I will do some testing tomorrow to better understand the behaviour of my setup. Just to confirm, I am using a Renogy 2000W inverter. When the inverter is in bypass mode, it runs via another RCBO, which is also used for the battery charger. My Question: If the upstream RCD/MCB (or RCBO in my case) detects the second bonding, will it trip, or could it remain live, potentially running with a ground loop? I’ll share my findings with you once I have tested it. Thanks again for your help!

      @@DCGUY Hi, I just popped out and tested. It does trip the house's RCD. Have you seen this video ua-cam.com/video/xzDEyC_zpaU/v-deo.html Renogy told him to bond earth with the 12V negative, but then the UPS feature will no longer work however RCD protection is working. I have looked at getting a transfer switch to solve my problem. I have been considering one from Offgridtec, and the manual says: "Do not connect the neutral conductor on the consumer side to earth or protective earth conductor; as the consumer sockets in particular have no protective multiple earthing (i.e., connection of PE-grounding wire with the neutral connector)." "If the inverter has no earth connection, the battery terminal which is connected to earth must be connected to the protective earth conductor." I think this essentially means earthing at the CU to the chassis, similar to what the guy did in the video. Any thoughts about bonding earth to the 12V negative instead of the 240V neutral?

    I ordered the DC House 24 volt 100ah off ebay and received an ecoworthy battery in an umarked box (shouldn't lithium batteries be marked and use special couriers)? If you follow ecoworthy/dc house state of charge chart you would believe the battery is faulty or only has half the stated capacity. They say 26.42 volts is 30% when in reality 26.1 is around 50% resting voltage. In truth if charging and discharging the voltage is completely irrelevant for state of charge which is why I'm glad I bought a shunt to measure ah in and out. It appears that for a charge/discharge of 0.1C (10 amps) you can probably get more than 100ah out of this battery. Also I learned that while ecoworthy say 29.2 is the charged voltage that seems to be where the BMS will disconnect. If using a solar charge controller you need to set the maximum voltage to be 28.4v or less otherwise you'll be bouncing off the disconnect everytime the sun appears from behind a cloud. Mine is now set for 27.8. Hopefully that is high enough for cell balancing as ecoworthy say their bms balances at 3.6 volts per cell but seeing as most of their information is wrong I'm hoping that it is actually around 3.4 volts per cell. I know that fully charged is around 27.7v if you can look at the charging voltage graph (using the shunt). It hits that voltage and pretty much stops taking any current and the voltage shoots up. A lot to learn about charging/discharging lithium batteries! Now I just need some bigger solar panels so I can charge the battery in one day!

However, if its 24V the Amps will be 125 and a 20mm² cable. Also check what size BMS the battery is using, if its a 100 amp unit that will limit you to a maximum of 100 amps from the battery at any given time and if it is a 200 amp BMS again that will restrict you too 200 amps maximum. Hi, I understand your thinking. The power from the load output is actually coming from the main battery you have connected and as such any loads are powered in this way. It would be simpler and safer to connect your other battery in parallel with the 1st battery (positive to positive, negative to negative to keep voltage the same e.g 12V) This way you benefit from the charging protections, using load would bypass any of these protections. Hope this makes sense. Cheers 🍻

Great batteries for the price. I have tons of their solar panels too. While the panels efficiency/rating is not as good as others, their efficiency/price ratio is the best. What I mean is that their 100w panel might be only getting 75w on average, but it only cost $50. Other 100w panels might be getting 85w but they cost $70 making the Eco a better value. Their panels are also smaller in size.

Look up the part number and see what the max voltage is for the fets and I'm guessing they can't handle 48V (I've seen an SFK video about this exact model saying the stock JBD can't but the special SFK version made by the same manufacturer uses different fets that can handle 48V)

    Add a switch to that balancer. All of them that I've seen of that style have a solder pad labeled switch. You can short the pads with solder to have it permanently on or you can run a short wire off each pad and then to a small switch. NEVER balance your battery when below 3.45V per cell. You are just unbalancing your battery because when the voltage curve is flat there is no relationship between SOC and Voltage. So you are just playing the voltage game when the whole point of "balancing" is to balance the number of amp hours in each cell.
