      Thanks! If you watch the lesson from this series about building major scales, minor scales basically work the same way but if you use the whole step/half step pattern from the note A instead of the note C. That's "Natural Minor." For harmonic minor replace G with G#, and for Melodic minor replace F and G with F# and G# on the way up, BUT still play F natural and G natural on the way down. As far as reading, what's the issue with the more complex thing you're trying to read? Do you not understand the rhythm, the pitch, or some sort of other type of notation?

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia Рік тому

      Glad to help. lol jeez... That Porcupine Tree song is over 12 minutes long. If I had to try to break down the form: 0:00 Intro 1:58 Verse 2:26 Chorus 2:43 Verse 3:14 Chorus 3:30 Bridge 4:02 Guitar Solo 4:51 Verse 5:20 Chorus 5:37 Bridge 6:07 Transition 6:20 Guitar Solo 6:55 Instrumental A 7:19 Instrumental B 7:43 Instrumental C 8:08 Instrumental D 8:44 Guitar Solo 9:44 Verse 10:15 Chorus 10:44 Outro to Fade... I mean it's kind of like a normal form but with everything having an extra layer of stuff. Basically replace this: A = Verse B = Chorus A = Verse B = Chorus C = Bridge B = Chorus with this: A = Verse + Chorus B = Bridge + Solo A = Verse + Chorus B = Bridge + Solo C = Extended Instrumental A = Verse + Chorus It's still has the same idea of establishing two things, repeating those two things, contrasting, and then returning to something more familiar. It uses the same concepts but on a larger scale. I hope that helps!

    I think I am lost on what the partial column is?

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia Рік тому

      Hello!! Did you watch the other videos in this series? We talk about partials in video #3: ua-cam.com/video/WbLY35FXg0w/v-deo.html That's the word we use to describe the different notes you get by changing your embouchure (how your lips interact with the instrument). 1st partial would be the lowest sound you can get out by relaxing your lips. If you make your embouchure more firm and focused, you can make a higher note come out without touching the valves at all. For most people that higher note is going to be 2nd partial. As you continue to develop your embouchure you'll need to play somewhere between 5 and 7 (or more) partials to play certain pieces of music. In video #2 we go over the valves and in video #3 we go over using your lips to play in different partials. This is the first videos where we put those two things together to play even more notes. I hope that helps! I haven't made too many videos in a while because I've been too busy at the studio. I hope to make more in the future though, and I always try to at least read comments and reply to questions. 🙂

    - How do you mic a drum set with only 3 mics? - Put one inside of the kick drum and take other two in both hands... Great video, horrible sound

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia Рік тому

      The most minimalistic mic setup you could probably do and get a decent sound would be just one condenser mic a few feet away from the drum set. From there I'd probably prioritize using specialized mounted mics for the kick and snare. Ones for the toms would be nice too, but I'd probably do 2 pencil mics for overheads before I worried about that. Put that all together and you'd have mounted mics on all the shells (1 kick, 1 snare, 3 toms), 2 overhead pencil mics, and it's nice to have a nice condenser as a room mic as well. The answer for this video is... zero dedicated mics. This was something just recorded quickly as a learning aid for our in-studio students with the internal mic of the camera. In a pinch you could also use something like a handheld dedicated audio recorder. Some of our more recent videos at least have that, so they have better quality audio. I would like to do higher fidelity version of these at some point, but I've been too busy at the studio to dedicate time to things like that. :(

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia Рік тому

      @@lisalegrand2186 Yeah, cymbals can take a little time to discern. Basically some are used for "riding" [playing steady patterns on] when you play time patterns and others are used more for accenting or punctuating important points in time. Most contemporary music will use the hi-hat for the first one of those things and crash cymbals for the second, but they can both be used for the opposite along with other cymbals that can be used in either role too.

    Can I learn drum by using app called Real drum

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia Рік тому

      Is this a question? Learning with an app can really vary from person to person. For some people things click, and they have an easy time learning independently. Other people really struggle learning about music even with 1-on-1 assistance. And there's everything in between or maybe it's one way for certain aspects and the other way for other aspects. @@zoul34 Hi! Someone might be showing you things that are more complicated or even unnecessary. I've been playing music for over 20 years, and I'm getting close to have been teaching about 20 years too. You pretty much never need to think in 3 for one hand and 2 for the other or think in two BPMs at once. The closest thing to that is the concept of polyrhythms, and you don't really think two different things at the same time. You build a more complex framework that accommodates two simpler ideas in a new way together. Try going through the rest of this play list to start working on basic rhythm and coordination exercises. Best of luck on your journey! I hope you stick with it.

      Thanks! I haven't had a chance to post anything new in a while, but one of my studio partners should be posting a new series pretty soon. If you have any specific requests, I'd be down to take a shot at it if there isn't much in the way of existing resources online. If there is though, I'd probably just point you in that direction. :D

    My parents couldn't afford lessons, let alone a drum kit. You are right to the point with no yapping. That right there deserves a paycheck.

      I feel you there! I started music playing trombone in school band because I didn't feel like I could ask my parents to shoulder the cost of me learning anything I actually wanted to do. My dad played trombone when he was younger, so we just had one stored away. Eventually I talked them into getting me a guitar, I taught myself for a few years, and I managed to study music at a state university on scholarships. Now I run a studio in northern California, and I make sure we both provide scholarships for locals and make free online resources for folks in similar situations to me when I was younger. Glad to help! I haven't made much new material in a while since things have been so busy at the studio, but I'm hoping to get to it again later.

    For beginners ..drum kits ..how many pieces 3, 4, 5 ...????

    • @MTSstudiosmedia
      @MTSstudiosmedia 2 роки тому

      Hi! Thanks for the comment. :) For the longest time 5 piece was just the standard for just about everything. More recently 4 piece is what you're more likely to see for new drum kits. I tend to recommend used 5 piece kits for beginners for a few reasons. -Most beginner literature is old, so it's based on 5 piece kits since they were the standard for so long. -Buying used kits is cheaper (and less wasteful potentially) -Since a 5 piece is a kick, snare, and 3 toms (2 rack and 1 floor) it gives you 4 drums in front of you to play with your hands. A lot of beginning patterns will be based on cycles or sets of 4 or 2, so it's nice to have an even number of drums to map those ideas to. That all said, 4 pieces are fine! You don't really see 3 pieces very much. If you search for 3-piece drum set, you'll mostly find high end shell kicks that are just a kick, floor tom, and rack tom, and the expectation is that you would shop for the snare drum a la carte. ;) I hope that's helpful. Feel free to post any other questions or requests. I haven't made any new videos in a few years since I've been too busy at the studio. I'm hoping to pick back up sometime though.

      @@dibejac8391 Thanks for the comment! So my phase two for brass instruments is mainly to do the following things: -Expand on rhythm -Improve range and embouchure by doing lip slurs -Really start getting tonal vocabulary dialed in by learning all your major scales -Get started on doing some book work so you can improve independently -Projects, projects, projects! I don't know how soon I'll be able to do a new series, since things have been so busy lately, but if you have any one-off requests I'd give them a look. At the very least I might be able to point to some other pre-existing resources that I'd recommend.
