  • Most of the time people just start memorizing fingerings for notes without understanding how your valves work. If you take the time to understand how they work mechanically, it will make it much easier to learn everything else you need to learn.

      Glad to help! We always try to make sure to establish ideas in a way that you can think about them logically instead of just using brute force memorization. That way it's easier to figure things out again if you partially forget, and it's also easier to learn new things as you progress. 👍

    Why is the long one never played by its self?

      Thanks for watching, and thanks for asking. The long one is roughly equivalent to the first and second valves added together, so some people actually do use it as an alternative fingering to 1 and 2 together. In general, I think it's harder to tune, so I advise beginners to avoid it. You can use it as a alternate fingering for what we labeled as 4th position in the video though.
