The reason they added it back in could be a simple mistake. When reprinting the story, the person doing it probably went and used the original text, not realizing that it had been since edited. It doesn't mean they wanted to use the wording primarch and legion. It is very likely just a mistake.

It could also be a case of them not really going through a full on editorial process when re-releasing the story and it just slipped in through the cracks...Of Slaanesh.

Maybe it's a boring answer but i suapect that it probably wasn't unretconed as a deliberate action but instead they just reprinted the original version of the text by mistake possibly without realising a change had even been made in the past. This is a trap i see a lot of Warhammer fans falling unto, assuming that everything GW does is delibrate and calculated when in actuality they are a disorganised mess of a company.

I would REALLY not put much weight on the fact that the story was republished with the old terminology. GW gonna GW and the most likely explanation is that some dork greenlit the wrong copy of the short story to be re-released.

I remember 40KTheories mentioning this a while ago in a video. He theorised that what happened here is that the author confused "Primarch" with "chapter master". I might be wrong

One name: C.S. Goto. Guy was notorious for writing the most awful entries in WH40K Fiction back in the day. This guy was responsible for 90% of WH40K memes of the mid 00s, involving EldarXHumans, HumansXDeamonettes, EldarXSpace Marine (nothing 'happened', just very close friends...), writing stuff about crusade era WH30K before GW had any officially outlined guidelines for what authors can and can't do with it and it pre-dated the time GW started fleshing out the Horus Heresy, Backflipping Terminators, Eldar worshiping Slaanesh, Eldar equipment sucking, Overpowered Lasguns, Space Marines using Multilasers. Everything he wrote was ridiculous and lore breaking. Games Workshop has pretty much ret-conned and proclaimed every piece of work he has been involved in as non-canon. There are very few things in Warhammer 40 000 that Games Workshop has outright declared as retconned or non-canonical. Everything C.S. Goto and 90% of the og content in 1st edition is on the list of "not canon".

Wasn't Ironheart the attempt by marvel comics to replace ironman with an awful "hypercompetent" teenage girl? A legion of ironhearts sound mind-bendingly terrible idea. (and yes, i know that the 40k book predates marvels terrible idea by more than a decade.)

I think 'we' (that goes for everyone involved in GW games either as a hobbyist or a staffer) get far too hung up on whether or not a particular story, or Codex, or character is canon. Like 40K is one tight cohesive story (it never was that, and it suffers when you try to turn it into that). Less canon, more apocrypha please.

I want chapters to have more Ethnic themes again, I loved the Deathwing when they had all their feathers, headdresses , bird skulls, face paint and other Native American feeling decoration, The White Scars look far too Caucasian now, even Khan got de-ethified, I would love a proper Central Africa themed chapter with all the associated iconography, I imagine dreadlocks and power spears, even huge battlecats to ride into battle, like the space wolves cavalry. . . bordering on Thundercats, Chapter master Panthro with power nunchucks, lol.

Also could one of the lost primarchs be a reprogrammed thinking machine who looked like a human ala terminator infiltrator model hence massive taboo for public consumption.

Why not have sigmar as one of the lost primarchs? Make him the living son of the emperor after a tryst with a tribal woman on a backward planet. Sigmar while not a psyker has innate divine power was he could impose his divine might on any individual. He’s kept secret because he is an actual child of emperor and not a creation.

The Iron Hearts feels like the exact kinda name you would find for a Space Marine group. After all, at one point the "Rainbow Warriors" were/are(?) a thing. I had a thought that if the Iron Hearts came back traitors they could be called the Black Hearts but then my brain was like "Nah, that's your new custom Ultramarine Successor chapter that functions as an Imperial Privateer fleet (Pirates that loot on behalf of a government)." Greeeeeaaat now I gotta figure out a color scheme and lore.....

With names like death guard, raven guard, dark angels, blood angels, ultramarines and SPACE WOLVES, iron hearts is not that bad, people really forget how silly sometimes names are in warhammer.

I would assume the second reprint of the story was a mistake. Someone took the first edition when they were meant to grab the second and because all the stores had already been edited no one looked at the stories that closely.

wouldn't be surprised if the person putting the anthologies together accidentally put the wrong version of the story into the anthology. But still i really enjoy these little stories and seeing how GW changed their minds etc. very nice video!
