Small Boat Docking Fail 2022 by a Professional Captain

I am a professional boat captain, I drive very large boats, and I could not dock this tiny light boat. I hate this video. We used it to rebed our keel... I'm very happy to see what a hard time you had getting that stuff off! Make sure you use it everywhere if you're about to sell a boat, otherwise you're not being a proper POS (Previous Owner-Sailor); every new owner should have their share of surprises from the prior owner 😁

    Nice video, and totally fine for the US. But maybe you should also say, that in most countrys of the world you would need the yachtmaster, or at least an aditional skipperlicence to the MMC to captain a comercial vessel.

    Here's the other harsh truth: we can all tell how bad you are at docking (how good a show it's gonna be) by how much yelling you start off with. Generally, if you're good at it, it's a fairly quiet event. The part no one shows you as well is where, before approaching the slip and in a calm stable situation, the driver or captain discuss the plan they have in mind, and he or she gives each person as simple a job as possible to complete at a certain time in the process. If it doesn't work out, leave and approach again, maybe even with a new plan. It's when you reach this stage where you actually start telling people on shore who you don't know but want to help "Thank you, but please, don't help." Those people, as nice as they are, aren't in on your plan, and generally screw it up for you... often by getting overly excited and pulling super hard on whatever line you hand to them. If they want to help they can go make you a margarita 🥳 Funny story about mooring that has both a bow and stern connection, we were doing just fine as we've done a hundred times before, and finally get all tied up. The guy in the sport fisher next to us says, "can I give you a tip? (he didn't wait for my answer) Have YOUR WOMAN run back and throw it in reverse while you walk back along the lead-line" Boy did my woman let him know what she thought of that! We don't get encounters like that in Northern California, but in SoCal, and Orange County in particular, men's jaws drop when my capable, brilliant, beautiful wife starts the outboard with a single pull, and other amazing feats that only an old salt can do.

    I can't resonate with docking being so difficult. I bought a 30ft sailboat, with no experience . My first time out was at night in SF Bay by myself. Docking was always the easiest part. There were narrow rows of boats, but it's so easy to slide that sucker right into the slip. I guess I'm just cool like that.

    I love the faces of people who crew on our boat when they ask in a timid tone, "so, ummm, how do you like this coiled?", and my answer is, "I don't care: do it however you think is best!". 1) they seem to always want to come back and come sailing with us again, 2) they get SO excited to help put the boat away... it's like they've met their first supportive, loving parent. 3) sometimes people do some pretty cool things that we didn't know about until this person 'did what they thought was best'! It's just odd to go racing, putting your boat in greater risk than usual of all sorts of breakages, and then the thing you're worried about at the end of the day is how they coiled the f-ing line, or the knot they used to tie the bumper on?! WTF, over?!

    Do Arenson surface drives have prop walk? There would be no rebound thrust off a hull because of their being at the end of a stick. Also those long drive Thai canal boats have nothing around the blades.

    • @CaptainBoomies
      @CaptainBoomies Місяць тому

      In my experience, I get very little prop walk from saildrives which are set far from the hull of the boat, so I would bet that those crazy canal boats don't experience walk.

    Prop walk is related to the hull, but not because of a push from the prop on the hull, but rather because the hull kills the tip vortices on part of the prop and because of that it cancels the thrust on that side. It's not so much the water coming off the prop is pushing on the hull, but rather that the prop blades are being very efficient in part of the rotation and very inefficient in the rest, so you get more thrust down one side. At these low speeds, prop slip is also causing a paddle wheel effect on the bottom half of the rotation of the blade, exactly where there's really inefficient thrust, so the bottom of the prop is just pushing water to the side and not providing any reverse thrust. A really accessible way to see all this is in the kitchen. Make a glass of chocolate milk with one of those battery powered mini whisks or make some whipped cream with an electric mixer with only one paddle. As you bring the spinning mixer towards the side of the container you'll see the level of the liquid is lower on the side closest to the wall of the container and a lot higher on the other side. The side of the container is just like your hull and the spinning mixer paddle is just like your prop. As the vortex gets cancelled out by hitting the wall of the container, it continues down the wall, unable to spin back to the front side of the paddle. The battery powered mini whisks are good for demonstrating that this effect isn't just in a semi submerged wheel but also happens when it's fully submerged.

    • @CaptainBoomies
      @CaptainBoomies Місяць тому

      This is an excellent explanation. I should have left in the part where I talk about sail drives having less prop walk because the hull is farther away and doesn't interrupt the fling as much... I get sick of editing and listening to myself, though. Thank you again for this! The internet is the best!!!!

  • @zachmaster426

    Great explanation. I always found it easy to visualize prop walk by just imagining the prop as a wheel rotating along an imaginary road underneath it that wants to drive the stern of the boat in whichever direction the top of the wheel is going. I agree with you in that it doesn't feel right to say that the bottom of the propeller somehow has more traction in the water than the top for many of the conventional reasons that are given....it just doesn't seem like there is enough differential pressure there to justify the extremely noticeable reaction that even a slow moving propeller can cause a boat to feel. But it does work so I choose to ignore how it makes me feel when I jump down the fluid dynamics rabbit hole only to find myself more confused than when I started 😂

    You should come up to Boston Harbor ( aka the HaaaBaaah ) - lots of stink pots and blow boaters, plus fishermen and lobstermen ( aka Lobstaaaah ) - but we all do get along. Love the commentary in the videos along with the satire. I have taken many power boaters sailing ( even diving ) before years back on my Island Packet 350 ( love a good 20kn breeze ) and they had some respect once we were done with all the traffic coming through the harbor islands and around Hull Gut ( aka The Gut ) and back at the dock from that 3 hour tour ( but with nice weather ). I now identify as a power boater and keep the respect for friends who sail. Keep the Episodes coming. Cheers!

    Hi Capt. Boomies. I just came across your channel. What an incredible FRESH way to share your knowledge. I owe a center console and started studying for the Merchant Mariner Credential. Recently I’ve decided to get a sailboat and was looking to get lessons and the ASA Certification until I came across your channel and was surprised to find out that the same Merchant Mariner Credential works for both power and sail. That’s so exciting because I don’t really need a separate license and of course will be saving money. Thank you for sharing and once again your channel is very cool. Regards from Alaska (I don’t live here, just cruising).

    Important point to remember. Sailboats tend to know the rules. All you need to skipper a power boat is a can of gasoline and a six-pack.
